No longer able to set an alarm on insignia voice speaker NS-CSPGASP

terrytad

The insignia speaker in question is probably four or five years old.
The speaker has Google assistant on it. Just recently unable to set an alarm.  Google response to trying to set alarm “sorry what’s the day and time”.  This feature has worked fine for years.

The Google assistant responds to all other function as it has in the past.

I have reset the speaker, reinstalled it on Google Home, restarted Wi-Fi, etc.
Any assistance is appreciated

Hey folks,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues setting up an alarm on your Insignia speakers. Please note that we have very limited support for third-party speakers with built-in Google Assistants. Since rebooting and resetting the device did not resolve the issue, it is best to reach out to Insignia Support for better assistance.

Cheers,

Muddi

Same issue here. Started last night. Totally disconnected wiped and reconnected the device. This is my primary alarm and I need it fixed ASAP. Thanks

I have the same problem. Work around... "Ok Google, Set a RECURRING alarm for 7 am". It's at least a temporary fix.

Also experiencing this issue.

I assume it’s either some sort of a bug or for whatever reason the older device some how has difficulty with the assistant and that specific command

Curious how old your devices are?

I say sell and we buy from someone else who cares about us.

This is a non-answer. Unmark this.

Instead, use one of the work-arounds below as answers.

Also, I have 3 Google assistants that have the same problem.

These speakers have been discontinued for 4-5 years, and as I'm sure you are aware Insignia is the house brand for Best Buy who uses 3rd party manufacturers to build their products.  There is no manufacturer support for them anymore.

The firmware on ALL of my Insignia speakers (I have about 12) is version 328 which was last updated several years ago.

Clearly Insignia did nothing to cause this problem, but rather Google made an update which is incompatible with legacy 3rd party products and therefore Google should be responsible for providing us with a solution.

It is completely unprofessional to make a statement trying to completely absolve yourself from responsibility for a problem which you created.

I'm sure that there are many thousands of us in this situation right now, and most will be intelligent enough to know that Insignia didn't suddenly render our speakers obsolete.  Google did.  I can assure you that this experience will influence my purchasing decisions in the future.  Google has the opportunity to make this right and keep it's customers happy, or to summarily dismiss and alienate us.

yes. This is a clearly a breakage by Google.

If you no longer support hardware, then leave it the F alone so that the code that used to work continues to work.

Yes, totally agree,  it's very clear now that it's some sort or bug.

Perfectly said! Thank you for your well written statement 👍🏻

...and Insignia tells us the same thing: it's a Google problem!

If you say "set an alarm for 8am every day" it will work

but NOT if you don't want an alarm every day at 8am. That is the point. If we wanted that we could use an old alarm clock.

I will try this, thank you.

Muddi, The "issues" we are all experiencing were caused by Google. Why doesn't Google just own up to that and issue a fix? A lot of people are being affected by this.

Wrong it's a Google caused error. Fix it!!!

Saying the same statement dose not fix the problem find a way to fix it

Mine now responds to commands like, "Set an alarm for tomorrow at 7am Eastern Standard Time."  Some progress is being made.

I have noticed that commands like, "Snooze" don't always work now.  Sometimes, mine will just flash the display when I issue this command.  Then I can re-issue the command and it may accept that.  Other times, I can "Cancel" the command.  A few times, I have had to power cycle the unit to get it to come back.  Are others seeing this issue?

I do see some of this.  Snooze never was consistent for me, so don't know if it is worse.  And certainly don't have to cycle power.  That would indicate a hardware issue to me, since there hasn't been a firmware update on this device in many years.

I’ve found that works too.  Prior I did factory reset but same results.  I bought an echo dot with clock, don’t like it as much frankly.  Insignia much easier to see being taller and brighter.

I have the same speaker (insignia voice speaker NS-CSPGASP) and it's about five years old at this point.  This issue started around Nov. 18th or before like the comment above stated. I haven't noticed any updates come through, I do have and always had build preview on and I just turned on notifications in an effort to work around what I believe is a bug. It looks like I'll have to go back to setting my alarm manually on the phone till a fix is pushed through or I buy a new. Any (recommendations?)

there's no way to set an alarm on the speaker through your phone, correct?

Please see the rest of this thread for some alternative commands that can be used to set alarms.  They aren't the best, but they are reasonably workable solutions in the meantime.

Same issue here.  I have 3 Insignia speakers and all are doing the same thing.  I DO use the one in my bedroom to set my morning alarms.  HELP!

Ours is the same, tell it to set s timer for the wake up time, it can do that 😉

Came here to say the same thing..... Except last night it wouldn't even do that 😡

If you do the math setting a timer works but very annoying

Same issue with my Insignia NS-CSPGASP. It's weird that only the alarm seems to be impacted.

Issue began Thursday, 11/16/23.

System firmware: 328
Cast firmware: 1.44.219548
Language: English (United States)
Country Code: US

Just happened to us today. We can literally see the date and time in the screen but it won't set an alarm. As a workaround, you can still set a timer.  So many strange new bugs with assistant in recent months.

Just say "Set alarm for day after today at 7 am".  It should work correctly for your local time.

Does anyone know a good replacement for this? Been using for bedroom alarm for years .

I'm thinking the Google Nest Hub may be our best option if Google Home and/or Google Assistant is what we most want. The screen can be set to just show the clock when the room is dark, or turn off the whole screen if you prefer.

Here's a blog post with various choices.

Honestly, after this experience, I wouldn’t waste my money on another google smart device. Who knows in another few years, we’ll all be back where we started from.
the Amazon Alexa devices hold up much better, and you can actually talk to a human if you need help.

I did the original post just a couple days ago and decided to buy a replacement.

this was some what inexpensive and the only real difference with my original device it doesn’t display the time.  The alarms works perfectly fine

Google mini will work. I just added a couple of them in the rooms with the aftermarket speakers having the problem and left the aftermarket speakers in place. The mini sets the alarms. The aftermarket speakers still work for everything else.
