No longer able to stream music directly to Chromecast Audio or use it as a Default music speaker

Hello Community,

Up until a few days ago, I've been able to stream Spotify to my Chromecast Audio. This device has been working flawlessly but now something has changed.

Here's my configuration: Google Nest Audio (obtained as a replacement when Google Home Audio devices were bricked), 4 Google Home Minis and 1 Google Chromecast Audio. All devices are on the same mesh WiFi network and are reporting as connected. They're all running the latest cast firmware. They all respond to verbal commands correctly (not the Chromecast as it has no input.) I can stream music to them directly via a linked premium Spotify account. While streaming, I am able to transfer the audio from once device to another via the UI in Spotify.

The output Chromecast Audio, which is named "Stereo", is connected to my home stereo and has been set as the Default music speaker for the Google Nest Audio. Until a few days ago, I've been able to invoke the Nest as follows: "Hey Google, play (insert request here)" to which it responds "Alright. Playing (request) on stereo." The result is the music request plays on the stereo.

Now when I attempt the same request, I get the same response but nothing happens. No music and no indication of music playing when looking at either the Nest or the Chromecast via the Google Home app on my Android device. If I attempt to force music to the Chromecast with "Hey Google, play (request) on stereo", the response is "Alright. Playing (request) on stereo" but nothing plays.

I've rebooted all the Google devices, reset the Chromecast to factory, and reset the network. Still no music.

What have I missed? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

We've had the same issue. We have a slightly different setup. We have a Chromecast audio attached to our receiver. My husband read that they recently stopped supporting Chromecast. Can't say I'm surprised when I hear that Google has stopped supporting something....

As of today, the workaround of “move this music to my chromecast audio” is no longer working. I will now bump this thread twice daily.

Same issue.. Come on Google 😢🙄🥺

So just so I understand

Not Spotify related, although effected it's from the recent January firmware upgrade to CCA?

I believe there is currently a global issue with Chromecast Audio and Chromecast gen2 devices showing as offline. Don't be tempted to reset any of them, you an error saying the Chromecast can't be authenticated and can't complete the setup process.

Does anyone from Google actually reply to these threads? If so it would be great to know what's going on!

Thanks for your comment on my recent post, I decided to delete my post as I don't want this new Global issue to interfere with this specific thread.

@MarcusP Are you still able to “move” a stream from your Nest Hub or Speaker to your WiiM?

I was able to use move up until yesterday. It no longer works.

In my case chromecast audio is not working in any way to stream from spotify (neither voice command or device selection), for yt music, can't stream from app, says the device is not verified, but it works on yt music with voice command ... in the google home app, the device appears offline. In home assistant device is responding well. Any updates? When we will get an official position from google?

Same issue here. On my iPhone Spotify app, my CCAs intermittently appear as devices, but on my PC Spotify app, they no longer appear. Within my Google Home app, some CCAs appear as devices, but I cannot connect to them when selecting them. Frustrating.

I received a response from Google asking me to perform some troubleshooting steps. I replied that I am unable due to the current outage. Here's a snippet from their response - I highlighted the salient part:

Thank you for informing us. We are still investigating the outage. We will let you know once resolution is available. For the meantime, please do not perform factory reset to your device.

There seem to be two problems currently - one that has existed for at least a month, as documented in the early posts in this thread, and a new problem that began within a few days ago. Are they related? I don't know.

I'm having similar issues.  I use a JBL Link Portable as the Google Smart Speaker, and was using a chromecast to stream Pandora, IHeartRadio, and SiriusXM to a conventional receiver and speakers.  It's worked fine for the last 2 years, but I was unable to get Pandora or iHeartRadio to stream ("Hey Google, Play xxxxx on Backyard Stereo" was my working command).  SiriusXM still streamed however.  I used this hiccup as an excuse to purchase a WiiM Pro, but am encountering the same issue.  The WiiM app will stream things fine, but if I try to go through Google Home, it will say it's working, but no audio.  SiriusXM still works via voice command though.

new issues WTH is going on google ?

For some reason i was still able to play my Spotify playlists when sending voice commands to google home mini to play on CCA (its default speaker to play to).

I tried today in bathroom speaker whilst having a shower, started playing on google home mini rather than CCA speaker. ah well I thought better than nothing, but i tried to skip song, no response to voice, tried again nothing, told it to stop wouldn't stop ?

I opened google home app none of the CCA showed up, all unavailable. The google home mini showed it was playing but wouldn't let me do anything. I had to reboot the google home mini to get it stop playing.

I just tested in another room and similar results.

This has really turned into a total mess.

I'm having the same issue but no nest hub. Google Chromecast audio devices I cast over Spotify just using home. Now they aren't connecting in the home app as they can't authenticate. My Spotify sees them even though home doesn't but doesn't connect.

Glad i found this forum. Same issue here since sunday. Hoping for a solution

Update from My side. Since this morning my speaker groups and one CCA  is available again.

The other CCA (I unfortunately reset to factory default in the hope that solved the problem, prior to finding this forum 😞  ) won't come back to live.

The CCA is found in google home then the process of configuration start. After a while the process replies with the message that the unit cannot be connected to. Some retries do not change that to a succeeded.

Hoping this had to so something with my i-Phone I tried the process with an Android tablet. Bummer that gives the same result. Waiting for more replies towards a final solution from google :S

Clearly this is a general problem, but, is there a chance to get an official position from google? Or is a link where we can check the status of this issue?

I inquired about the status of this problem, its relationship to the larger outage and whether the issues were being addressed in parallel. This is the response I received:

The engineering team is still working on a fix. For the meantime there is no ETA provided but customers are advised to refrain doing a reset. We will update you right away once the issue is resolved.

same problem, I have multiroom, 1 google mini/nest per room, all linked to Chromecast audio>amplifier>in ceiling speaker. Only happen if Spotify selected as audio in google home as with youtube it's working. Also, very strange, 'Hey google play music'=>nothing, but 'hey google, play playlist XXX' with XX existing playlist on Spotify, we get music !

My CCA is back to where it was prior to the expired certificate issue. Time now for Google to address our issue.

RetiredBy55

I received a reply from the Chromecast Support rep indicating that a rollout is in progress. That bumped my CCA cast firmware to 1.56.467166. I assume that the update was to address the certificate expiration issue. I was then able to perform the troubleshooting they requested prior to the outage as follows:

  • Make sure that their device and host device is connected to the same network.
  • Unlink and relink the spotify account from the Google Home app.
  • Make Spotify as a default music provider.

As expected, these steps did not resolve the issue of redirecting output to the CCA. I responded this morning that the issue is still not fixed.

Yes, I believe there are two issues, and the newest, larger one sucked the air out of my hope for Google's solution for the preceding one this thread is about.

Mine is working again, so don't lose hope 🙂

I can play from phone direct, works in google home and I can ask google mini to play random music on spotify to the CCA (default speaker for mini)

the unit i did do a factory reset is not however 😞

Let's hope not @DeaneG. Should you wish to add additional pressure, email # with the case number 4-5741000038678.

The email address got stripped when I replied. Trying again - chromecast-support at Google dot com

Done. Hope someone is listening.

I tested this yesterday and am still dealing with the original issue as well.  To date, I can still say, "Ok Google.  Play XYZ song on Youtube Music" and it will reply with "Ok.  Playing XYZ song on (name of CCA) on YouTube Music" and it is working.  If I leave out the "on Youtube Music", it will reply with "Ok.  Playing XYZ song on (name of CCA)" and nothing happens per the original issue.  This is with Spotify set as the default music app.  I'm reluctant to do any further troubleshooting at this point, because I don't want to make things worse.  For the entirety of this issue, I have been able to cast from Spotify from my android phone to the CCA.  Cast firmware on the CCA is 1.56.467166.

Interesting such a broad range of issues.

Original issue:

  • Ask spotify to play music says its playing nothing played
  • unlink CCA from Google home will play music on google mini all ok
  • intermittent in home app
  • If i asked it to play a playlist on from my Spotify would work to any CCA

This week

  • My CCAs all came up as unavailable in google home even my factory reset one.
  • I could not cast from Spotify or Soundcloud to CCA
  • When I asked google home to play Spotify, it would only play to itself and not to the linked speaker all ok

Now :

  • CCAs all come up after a second or so in Google home ( apart from factory reset CCA)
  • I can now Spotify connect and Soundcloud cast to any CCA even factory reset CCA
  • I can ask google home to play music to to any CCA except factory reset one and it works fine

Cast firmware on the CCA is 1.56.467166.

This morning I was able to stream to my CCA directly from pandora on my iPhone. Will test other features today and report back.

Streaming to CCA works again. Unfortunartly reconnecting factory defaulted CCAs not yet :(. Tried to reconnect a neste unit, tant worked fine. Waiting for the instructions to reconfigure /reconnect the defaulted CCA

Mine is the same I can ask google to play music now from Spotify and it plays to CCA without having to move.

Unfortunately I did factory reset one CCA, it was in my main kitchen area I use the most. Still has the original problem.

fingers crossed fix comes soon.

I am back to the situation which I was in prior to the global outage like the posters above.

Can anybody with a WiiM Pro confirm whether they are able to request that their Google Nest (or other Google speaker) play Spotify and whether the music plays directly on the WiiM (set as the default speaker). Or are you still required to ask that the stream be “moved”?

My WIIM still does not play music from Spotify if requested to my Google nest mini. The move option does not work for me either,  because my config is in Dutch and I do not know the move command in Dutch,  if it even exists.

For those that factory reset, I also factory reset and was able to get it to reconnect after MANY retries.  Aix of factory reset, unplugging and replugging back in, waiting a minute while it was unplugged.  I did also remove it from my Google home completely.  A few times it detected the CCA but didn't connect, then for some reason it finally connected completely.

I do typically use the Ethernet adapter plug but for this I went completely on Wi-Fi.

Unfortunately no secret to getting it connected again other than keep trying.  It probably took me 20min and countless attempts before it finally worked

my factory reset unit works in google home app and I can play direct from phone but original problem of asking google home mini to play music doesnt work,

Update your Google home. They fixed it

Which of the two problems were you referring to?
Also, how can I force an update of a Google Home device?
