One of my Google minis stops on the middle of a sentence

KAV
Community Member

I have several Google minis. One of them has stopped in the middle of a sentence while answering a question. It has a good connection to my Google router. What can I do to fix it?

Agreed. What we do know is that a new software routine that makes google stop talking seems to have been released at the same time as this issue in which google suddenly stops talking. Very suspect to me!

Wonder if these forums actually ever get seen by anyone other than us community members?

RE: Noise.   I've tried it in a perfectly quiet environment,  makes no difference.   We sleep with a fairly loud  air cleaner in our BR  which I first thought may of been confusing that device.   Definitely not it.   Also disabled the "continuing conversation"  option also no help.  Reset all my minis.   Gen 1 and Gen2 , still all doing it.   Tried disabling all my routines to see if there was a conflict- no change.   Called "tech support" - circular conversation from someone reading from a script that was a  total waste of time.  As mentioned before,  he wanted me to post an audio example.  Which can't be done on these forums.  I guess it's hard to imagine what an incomplete sentence sounds li................

I'm having the same issue. I have 3 minis and they've all been doing it since late last year. It's so frustrating. I've tried rebooting both my modem, router and the minis. Nothing works. It's gotta be a glitch with their recent update. If google doesn't fix it soon, we're switching to Alexa.

I reached out again via chat, and got a very helpful rep  this time (Jenilyn) I also sent her a link to this community post, and others- and she's read through it and is eager to help.   She wanted me to do another reset, but also log in with another email and go through some steps one by one.  I'm not at home  and can't do it at this moment, but will update what I find once I have a block of time in to do it.   If anyone has the time to do it sooner,  please contact support via chat or call- and reference this case number: 3-8180000032224.   (and of course share the results)

Thanks!

This request is nothing but busy work for you. It's nothing from our end whatsoever. This is Google and Google needs to fix it. Everything worked fine for years. It just began in January...for all of us.  That means, it's not your home or specific devices. You can't fix it.

It didn't work for me. But after it stops talking I say hey Google repeat, and then it always seems to finish. Idk why it will finish the 2nd time and not the 1st.

Yes, I have noticed the same exact behavior. Fails the first time then works when I ask it to repeat.

Reminder for you to update, and for me to read your update when you do! 🙂

I don't have an update. Unfortunately, Google hasn't fixed it yet and still stops mid-sentence.  It's not as bad, it doesn't seem to happen as often so hopefully that's a good sign.

It happens EVERY time for me. I have left feedback daily each time for around 2 months - at first it was occasional, now it's constant. My money is on a code change causing a nnetwork issue, e.g. async callback for the voice data not being waited on, and/or a lag/timeout occurring, and/or the voice data stream terminating since the cut off occurs at random part of the sentence each time

Just chiming in here to say that I've been having the same issue too

Hi. Would it be possible to get someone who is NOT the princess to kindly respond with something meaningful to say? We really need some help here folks. I think one more post from the princess about factory resets and I am going to be taken away to the funny farm in straight jacket where nice people will answer my questions more completely than Google home is doing right now

Having the same problem with my six minis speakers for my home. I also bought two minis speakers as a gift for my folks home a couple of months ago, and theirs is doing the same thing; stopping in mid sentence when responding. They all work fine when I use them to turn on/off lights or outlets, it's only and issue when the speaker responds to a question. Please fix this issue!

I am having the exact same problem. I've already factory reset, the connection to my router is great, this is happening across all of my minis. They are using the right power cord. None of the basic stuff is working.

It's a little bit patronizing that Princess_S keeps making the same suggestions over and over again instead of acknowledging that there's a problem she doesn't have a solution to.

Would like acknowledgment from Google at least. I mange technology on an apartment building where we put Google homes in every bedroom of our unita as a gimmick. That's hundreds of units and they're all doing it. I'm really frustrated and want to remove this item from our units.

This specific issue has changed for me.  It now seems to have word skips/breaks while speaking vs just stopping . Like the original issue it does not happen very often. Definitely an improvement than before! Has anyone else noticed this change in behavior?

Yes!  Mine does that sometimes too.

I also have this problem, with Nest Speaker and Nest mini. The voice cuts out mid-sentence.

Since it started I have changed router and internet provider and the issue is ongoing.

I have the same problem - 2 Google Home Mini bought together in January. Both cut off half way at random times. I've done all the restart/reset etc.

Cory-O

I've got five minis in the house of various generations, but only two of them have the problem and one of them is brand new. The only thing I can think of, and then I'm going to try, is to turn all of them off except for one that is having the problem. My thought is that another mini hears you as well and interrupts the one that is trying to respond. I'm foolishly hopeful but expect it's probably just bad code from a bad update.

I have also been experiencing this issue. I just received my Google nest and mini that I finished setting up this week. Cuts off mid-sentence on the first or second sentence when asking when stores open, to play music, etc.

Is it brand spanking new? Please take it back. I've not heard a post on here with anyone saying its just been purchased.  Google isn't fixing it so if you return please explain what's happening.

I'm thinking about it. I did a "restart" on the wifi point from within the Home app and it's fixed it SO FAR. But I have a feeling it will be back again soon.

Useless

I am having the SAME issue when asking for the local temperature.  The Google Home cuts off just before giving the temperature.  Based on the posts I have read, I have started saying the following, "Hey Google, What's the temperature and REPEAT?"  I only have to give the command once and Google Home says it twice.  🙂

Google's delay in fixing this obvious flaw in their code probably means that these devices are likely to be superseded by a different system soon.

I happened to discover a "fix" for this, but no one's going to like it.

I have 3 Google Home devices and one mini. I've had this problem since about 2018, where they stop mid-sentence and I have to fight with them ("okay google, okay google, okay google, never mind") to get them to start responding again.

Recently I moved one of the Google Home speakers to a different home, and even after several months, this problem has never happened on that device anymore. I was experiencing the problem on that device at my first home constantly.

None of the normal remedies, including factory resets, have worked at my first home. The next thing I'll try is to

  • remove all but one device from my network (to see if multiple devices active in the same home was the problem)
  • remove all but a single device in this home from my Google account altogether (to see if they're somehow colliding with each other that way)

Otherwise, I suspect something is configured in my router that Google hates. If none of this works, these things are getting donated. It's ridiculous.

I've had first addition devices since 11/2017 and never experienced any problems. New roater in 2020. I replaced them all with latest devices purchased from Google Store 5/2021...  same house and this glitch didn't begin until January 2022.

In fact, your comment is the first stating this issue stopping mid-sentence, not answering until we say repeat, ever happened prior to January 2022 and as far back as 2018.

Might be your device was something different than what's in this thread.

I share your sentiment.

You’re not alone. I’ve been thinking it was just me since January of this year. Finally googled to see so many others expediting this. There’s clearly a software bug on these that needs fixing. Something changed in January.

Good for you. But IMHO it sounds like a different case entirely.

I have constant interrupted sentences but never has the device stopped reacting to my commands. Also, I do not remember any other mentions of stopping to react to commands in this thread.

It sounds like your device actually drops temporarily out of service whereas the quite recent "cut off" problem is something different.

Same issue!

Same problem as everyone else..3 devices and all of them do it.

I thought mine had gone away but it just came back recently. I was able to record when it happened. Here's the link. I say "Hey Google" in this audio clip so turn down your volume or mute your Google home before listening to it.

I mean I love that you're working on it, and it's nice that you're trying to steer the conversation true so that others  are referred to a new thread. But let's get to the bottom of it here. Seems like you're stalling. You're not giving us anything real. This is the 21st century and you are Google. How can you possibly say that you have not located the problem and implemented a solution as yet? This is patently absurd. Can you please refer this to higher levels or developers? It's unacceptable. You're feeding us garbage in garbage out responses.. Please address this matter and please fix it now. We can get to the moon right? And Elon's gonna take us to Mars right? You can fix this silly ridiculous absurd issue.
