One of my Google minis stops on the middle of a sentence

KAV

I have several Google minis. One of them has stopped in the middle of a sentence while answering a question. It has a good connection to my Google router. What can I do to fix it?

Our Google Home and Nest mini has started doing the same stupid thing. My wife or I will ask for the weather outside and the nest mini will start replying but then suddenly stop 3/4s of the way through. We'll ask the same question again and get the same results. Provides most of the answer but cuts out 2-3 words before the end of the phrase, ex. "it's 10" (instead of saying "it's 10 degrees outside").

My problem started months ago, when I bought the Nest Audio. For some reason, after that, all devices, Google Home, Home Mini, and the Nest Audio that I had just purchased all started to cut off in mid-sentence. They often do the same thing after I say Hey Google. The light comes on, stays on for a few seconds, then goes back off without saying anything at all. Anything I ask requiring a rather long respopnse is almost sure to get cut off quickly. Extremely frustrating!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Home/Nest Mini speakers. I appreciate you sharing all the details regarding this.

Let's go ahead and try to perform a complete reset on your device to see if this would fix the issue. Also, please make sure that these devices are within range from the router preferably within 10-15 feet away for a better WiFi signal.

Let me know how it goes by responding to this thread.

Best,

Princess

Did the reset.. still doing it.. It is on all my devices  even the one sitting beside my router so that is not the problem either.. This along with it not remembering what podcast I was listening to  has mad Home/mini/nest almost useless.. I now have to use my echos for podcasts... Google has gone so far backwards

I realize that this is a late reply but just so you are aware, nothing positive has revealed itself since my Google Home and Nest mini started acting up. We have tried resetting them, rebooted our modem which has been working perfectly fine in all other respects and as late as last week, our neighbourhood experienced a power/hydro outage that lasted for about an hour. Obviously, our internet and all devices were completely powered down fo this period. The problem still persists with random interruptions when attempting to ask our devices for weather or other information.

Hi Jake! In my opinion, it's unlikely to be any of my devices. Please read my reply to Princess. Thanks! I'd appreciate any help you might be able to provide, other than advice about approximation of the device to the router, or resetting the device itself. I've done tons of that stuff, even resetting my AT&T router, just in case that might be the culprit. Nothing has changed at all. 😒

Seems everyone is having the same problem after trying everything suggested and then some. Problem most definitely is not on the users end and unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an available solution. It makes using the devices useless which is very unfortunate since they were pretty handy and dependable before this. Definitely a setback.

I’m still having the problem, which started over the past 2 weeks or so, on three of our minis. Nothing has changed on our network or home.

Okay you keep suggesting this on several threads and it doesn’t fix it. It even happens on wifi points with very strong signal. Something is wrong here on a software level.

My three boxes, Google Home, Nest Audio, and Google Mini, were all literally within inches of the router. I've turned all of them off, other than the Nest Audio, because of the issue. I had reset each of them, one by one, and I even reset my AT&T router, hoping that might help. No help at all.  The issue first began with the purchase of the Nest Audio around Christmas, a few months ago. I had the Google Home and Google Mini for years, without this issue. After the problem occurred with my brand new Nest Audio, of course, I went back to my original two devices; but, within days, they too started doing the same thing that started with the Nest Audio. So I've turned them off completely, and I'm gong with just the Nest Audio, for now. It hasn't improved, but I can't take three of them acting like that at the same time. I love to use the translation feature every day, but it drives me crazy cutting off like that. BTW, I've also noticed a sharp decrease in the device's ability to understand me. It used to be better. It doesn't seem to matter if I try to pronounce everything super clearly. It seems to hear just what it wants to hear!  I sure hope you guys get this sorted out, although it doesn't look good at this point, with so much time having passed. These devices have been the most significant help in my life in quite some time. The timers alone have been super useful, although, I have to admit that, sometimes, they randomly cancel themselves with a very rude confirmation message that was completely unsolicited. That may be getting slightly better lately, though. As for the cutting off in mid-sentence issue, It has to be the service, to my thinking, because all three boxes suddenly acting up in the same precise way, at the same exact time, and one of them brand new, would seem to be extremely unlikely.

I'm in the same boat as well; no change. Nothing with regards to our home network or router setup. Nothing has been displaced, moved, etc yet both our older Google home (in the kitchen) and our relatively new Google nest mini (bedroom) are acting up on a random basis. More so with the Google Home which I'm about 2 hairs away from chucking it into the garbage. Last evening I asked it a simple question: "Hey Google, tell me tomorrow's weather." The darn thing responded with "I don't understand the question". I repeated the question; no response. Then I leaned in, inches away from the unit and had to raise my voice, like a parent scolding a child. It finally woke up and gave me a proper reply. I think our Google home is showing its age and soon will need a hearing aid. The nest mini; well it simply cuts out in the middle of its reply. If things don't get better soon I have a simple solution. I've been paying my Amazon Prime membership for nearly 2 years now. Next time their Amazon Echo/Alexa units go on sale for 50% off, I'm picking up 2-3 units. If these start acting up, Amazon has no qualms about replacing them, no questions asked.

I have 6 Google speakers and 6 echos... The Googles USED to be the superior choice but now the echo is better by far.. It is not because the echos got better it is because the Googles got much worse

Hey folks,

Apologize for the delays. Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. I've duplicated this thread to a similar trending issue on this link. Our team is aware of an issue affecting some users and are currently looking into the issue at hand.

I recommend everyone to send a fresh feedback on your devices by using the keywords: "GHT3 Cutting out in the Middle of a Sentence." Make sure to replicate the issue first before sending feedback so we can check the crash logs. For instructions on how to send feedback, you can visit here.

Also, I recommend following the main thread because this one will be locked automatically and you can provide and receive updates on the main thread.

Imagine also using googles mesh wifi and the mesh wifi has built in speakers and then supporting saying it must be your wifi.

LOL okay so it supports Netflix on my tv but your own google wifi devices are now the problem? Like the speaker is part of the wireless network for Christ’s sake.

Same. I have 8 speakers and they are all doing it. Resets and restarts did nothing. VERY annoying. It started many weeks ago.

been having this issue since Jan 2022. Used google speakers since 2015.

I am really getting irritated with our speakers. They all do it, so it isn't just one bad one, and all the resets, restarts, etc. just have zero result, not even at first. It isn't just stopping speaking in mid-sentence, either. Half the time when we ask it something, the lights go on like it is thinking and then it just says nothing at all. That happens even more often than it stopping mid-sentence. I feel like it is getting more "dumb" every day. I don't like having to walk up to the speaker and put my face right next to it and speak slowly and loud, but even then it sometimes either lights up then chooses to ignore me, or stops while speaking.

I feel like they were on their best behavior when they first came into the home, then over time they have settled in and stopped caring, opening the proverbial top button and just letting all the flaws hang out. Get it together, Google speakers.

I have the same problem. I got the Nest Hub 2nd gen for Christmas. I can ask it 2 questions and on the third question it will start to answer then stop. Then sometimes I will ask a question and get "something went wrong ask again in a few seconds".

Started having the same problem on all 3 devices in my house. It's definitely a software issue

Just finished reading other people's comments and the only good part is knowing that the problem(s) are not with us (the end user) but are actually with Google itself. I would say that until the problems are properly resolved, these items should be taken off the market and not sold due to obvious flaws. Nothing has gotten any better with our 2 Google products. Both have a tendency to cut out in mid sentence. One has developed an obvious hearing problem which forces us to raise our voices and repeat the question. When this occurs, often the second unit which is in our bedroom will respond. Sometimes as others have noted, the unit will appear to just ignore your command or question and has developed an "attitude" like some adolencents. I'll ask for the weather or a song, etc and the unit will light up, which to me indicates that it has heard us but then the lights will flicker back and forth for a moment as if it is thinking of a response, but then lights go out completely with no reply.

At this point, there is no doubt that there will be no more Google products coming into our home. Judging by the number of complaints here, there must be 100s if not 1000s of these defective units floating around. Google appears in no hurry to repair the problem which is no doubt at their end. Will we be getting refunds for this stuff? Doubtful! Seems like my next set of smart speakers will have to come from a competing company.

Your comment about the hearing problem and attitude problems are absolutely spot-on!

I have been doing this and will continue.

it now will cut out music mid song and videos mid song if on a display device.

What’s ever weirder - hours later it’ll will pick up the song and continue playing it. This is new within the past week. The point I dont want to play music on it anymore.

Yes, mine too!

I'm pleasantly surprised that I haven't had any issues for the past couple weeks but I'm keeping an eye on it.

StaceyJill

I haven't noticed it as much.

However, I am noticing two new problems since the stop mid-sentence isn't as often.   Everytime it lets me know I have a reminder, I ask what my reminder is and it lets me know. Then it asks me if I want to hear more reminders I say NO, and it continues to say umpteen reminders until I ask it to stop.

The other one that keeps happening is, its not transfering music within my devices. For example, when I'm listening to music on the bedroom speaker and I say hey Google play this on kitchen speaker, it says okay I'll play this on kitchen speaker. Except, it doesn't.  It keeps playing on the current speaker.  Then also plays music from hours before on kitchen speaker instead.

This product is catching bugs that needs to be fixed.

Hey dburleigh2,

Thanks for the update. Good to hear that the behavior of your device has improved now. Please do not hesitate to update this thread if you happen to experience the same issue.

@StaceyJill: I'm sorry to hear about the new issues on your speaker. It is best if you can create a new thread for that because this one is dedicated to Google Nest and Home Minis that are cutting out in the middle of a sentence. Creating a new thread for the new issue will help us a lot to address the specific concern that everyone has.  Moving forward, may I know the firmware version of your devices?

Looks like I spoke too soon... Mine hasn't stopped mid-sentence recently but it just disconnected from my network again and acts like I've never set it up, even though the Nest Mini is still in my Home app. Ugh.

I submitted that part of it in my report through the app on addition to it stopping mid-sentence... Do I need to submit a separate report about that again?

Yes, I've done all of the troubleshooting that is listed in every help and every suggestion that a Google search gave me. I had mentioned it in my initial post on this thread, but with over 100 replies, I'm sure it got buried. 😉

It's happened several times but it's completely inconsistent (not relating to wifi signal loss as we can turn off the router and turn it back on with the speaker being unaffected once it boots back up). It happened probably once a week on average until a week after I posted my comment and then it was a good 3 weeks until it happened again... I thought maybe the team had been working on fixes and that was one of them. 😕

I noticed it happening less as well but, this past week it's happened  every day.  I'm also noticing other problems.

It won't accept "no" as the answer to "do you want to hear more reminders?" I say no and it says okay then begins to tell me 15 more reminders.

The other qlich is it won't move music from one speaker to another any more. If you say Hey Google play this on kitchen speaker, it says okay I'll play it on kitchen... doesn't say the word speaker and then it keeps playing on the original speaker.

Theses other problems began in April.

Hey dburleigh2 and StaceyJill,

I appreciate all your efforts to share your feedback and experience with your Google Home/Nest devices. Let's keep this thread focused on an issue about the speakers stopping in the middle of a sentence since the team is already looking into this issue. It is best to create a new thread for your other concerns, and share the link here so I can respond immediately.
