One of my Google minis stops on the middle of a sentence

KAV
Community Member

I have several Google minis. One of them has stopped in the middle of a sentence while answering a question. It has a good connection to my Google router. What can I do to fix it?

Nobody believes you anymore. Nobody cares what you say anymore. Hello alexa! I hate her too but at least she answers questions. Thank you and good night

Has there been any update? Is it at least possible to downgrade the firmware because it was working fine for me for two years, and then all of a sudden it stopped. It's sad because I control most of my home appliances with it.

Same Here (still).

No problems at all for more than 2 years.
It happens on all 3 of my google devices.
They stop mid sentence.
They play the whole response when asked to repeat.

The times that it asks if I'd like more context and I answer "yes", the process of repeating what it said manages to make it oblivious to what I'm saying yes to ("I'm sorry, I don't understand").

Regardless of the stopping mid-sentence part, a few ridiculously simple lines of code would allow it to be aware that it just repeated a response that it just gave (or tried to give before it aborted and stopped speaking).

I can't believe this is a google forum.
Maybe "The Team" could acknowledge there's a problem even if they're not going to fix it.

You're right, it's incredibly annoying.
I've sent feedback with your requested keywords.
Unfortunately it's very easy to reproduce.
I'd gladly send a unit in to be evaluated but it's not needed.  It's obviously a software problem that resulted from a change/update.

There's also an extra second or 2 delay after I say the wake phrase before it starts listening.
This is verified by enabling the option to have it beep after hearing the wake phrase.

As mefl wrote, the ability to downgrade the software would be very welcome.

I just read that Google has announced that it has pretty much mastered human level AI on a small scale that only needs to be upscaled and rolled out.
Maybe asking the human-level AI to take a look at the latest build for these devices would be a good plan.

A month or so ago it started to stop it's answers in mid-sentence..

I ask it what the temp is outside and it would say "right now it is 6"

When it should have said "right now it is 68 degrees"

I’m suffering the same issue on 6 of them.

Our Google Home and Nest mini has started doing the same stupid thing. My wife or I will ask for the weather outside and the nest mini will start replying but then suddenly stop 3/4s of the way through. We'll ask the same question again and get the same results. Provides most of the answer but cuts out 2-3 words before the end of the phrase, ex. "it's 10" (instead of saying "it's 10 degrees outside").

My problem started months ago, when I bought the Nest Audio. For some reason, after that, all devices, Google Home, Home Mini, and the Nest Audio that I had just purchased all started to cut off in mid-sentence. They often do the same thing after I say Hey Google. The light comes on, stays on for a few seconds, then goes back off without saying anything at all. Anything I ask requiring a rather long respopnse is almost sure to get cut off quickly. Extremely frustrating!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Home/Nest Mini speakers. I appreciate you sharing all the details regarding this.

Let's go ahead and try to perform a complete reset on your device to see if this would fix the issue. Also, please make sure that these devices are within range from the router preferably within 10-15 feet away for a better WiFi signal.

Let me know how it goes by responding to this thread.

Best,

Princess

Hey all,

I wanted to check in and see if you managed to see Princess_S post? Are you still in need of any help with your device cutting out mid-sentence? Please let me know if the issue is still present, so we can further assist.

Best regards,

Jake

Did the reset.. still doing it.. It is on all my devices  even the one sitting beside my router so that is not the problem either.. This along with it not remembering what podcast I was listening to  has mad Home/mini/nest almost useless.. I now have to use my echos for podcasts... Google has gone so far backwards

I realize that this is a late reply but just so you are aware, nothing positive has revealed itself since my Google Home and Nest mini started acting up. We have tried resetting them, rebooted our modem which has been working perfectly fine in all other respects and as late as last week, our neighbourhood experienced a power/hydro outage that lasted for about an hour. Obviously, our internet and all devices were completely powered down fo this period. The problem still persists with random interruptions when attempting to ask our devices for weather or other information.

Hi Jake! In my opinion, it's unlikely to be any of my devices. Please read my reply to Princess. Thanks! I'd appreciate any help you might be able to provide, other than advice about approximation of the device to the router, or resetting the device itself. I've done tons of that stuff, even resetting my AT&T router, just in case that might be the culprit. Nothing has changed at all. 😒

Seems everyone is having the same problem after trying everything suggested and then some. Problem most definitely is not on the users end and unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an available solution. It makes using the devices useless which is very unfortunate since they were pretty handy and dependable before this. Definitely a setback.

I’m still having the problem, which started over the past 2 weeks or so, on three of our minis. Nothing has changed on our network or home.

Okay you keep suggesting this on several threads and it doesn’t fix it. It even happens on wifi points with very strong signal. Something is wrong here on a software level.

My three boxes, Google Home, Nest Audio, and Google Mini, were all literally within inches of the router. I've turned all of them off, other than the Nest Audio, because of the issue. I had reset each of them, one by one, and I even reset my AT&T router, hoping that might help. No help at all.  The issue first began with the purchase of the Nest Audio around Christmas, a few months ago. I had the Google Home and Google Mini for years, without this issue. After the problem occurred with my brand new Nest Audio, of course, I went back to my original two devices; but, within days, they too started doing the same thing that started with the Nest Audio. So I've turned them off completely, and I'm gong with just the Nest Audio, for now. It hasn't improved, but I can't take three of them acting like that at the same time. I love to use the translation feature every day, but it drives me crazy cutting off like that. BTW, I've also noticed a sharp decrease in the device's ability to understand me. It used to be better. It doesn't seem to matter if I try to pronounce everything super clearly. It seems to hear just what it wants to hear!  I sure hope you guys get this sorted out, although it doesn't look good at this point, with so much time having passed. These devices have been the most significant help in my life in quite some time. The timers alone have been super useful, although, I have to admit that, sometimes, they randomly cancel themselves with a very rude confirmation message that was completely unsolicited. That may be getting slightly better lately, though. As for the cutting off in mid-sentence issue, It has to be the service, to my thinking, because all three boxes suddenly acting up in the same precise way, at the same exact time, and one of them brand new, would seem to be extremely unlikely.

I'm in the same boat as well; no change. Nothing with regards to our home network or router setup. Nothing has been displaced, moved, etc yet both our older Google home (in the kitchen) and our relatively new Google nest mini (bedroom) are acting up on a random basis. More so with the Google Home which I'm about 2 hairs away from chucking it into the garbage. Last evening I asked it a simple question: "Hey Google, tell me tomorrow's weather." The darn thing responded with "I don't understand the question". I repeated the question; no response. Then I leaned in, inches away from the unit and had to raise my voice, like a parent scolding a child. It finally woke up and gave me a proper reply. I think our Google home is showing its age and soon will need a hearing aid. The nest mini; well it simply cuts out in the middle of its reply. If things don't get better soon I have a simple solution. I've been paying my Amazon Prime membership for nearly 2 years now. Next time their Amazon Echo/Alexa units go on sale for 50% off, I'm picking up 2-3 units. If these start acting up, Amazon has no qualms about replacing them, no questions asked.

I have 6 Google speakers and 6 echos... The Googles USED to be the superior choice but now the echo is better by far.. It is not because the echos got better it is because the Googles got much worse

Imagine also using googles mesh wifi and the mesh wifi has built in speakers and then supporting saying it must be your wifi.

LOL okay so it supports Netflix on my tv but your own google wifi devices are now the problem? Like the speaker is part of the wireless network for Christ’s sake.

Same. I have 8 speakers and they are all doing it. Resets and restarts did nothing. VERY annoying. It started many weeks ago.

been having this issue since Jan 2022. Used google speakers since 2015.

I am really getting irritated with our speakers. They all do it, so it isn't just one bad one, and all the resets, restarts, etc. just have zero result, not even at first. It isn't just stopping speaking in mid-sentence, either. Half the time when we ask it something, the lights go on like it is thinking and then it just says nothing at all. That happens even more often than it stopping mid-sentence. I feel like it is getting more "dumb" every day. I don't like having to walk up to the speaker and put my face right next to it and speak slowly and loud, but even then it sometimes either lights up then chooses to ignore me, or stops while speaking.

I feel like they were on their best behavior when they first came into the home, then over time they have settled in and stopped caring, opening the proverbial top button and just letting all the flaws hang out. Get it together, Google speakers.

I have the same problem. I got the Nest Hub 2nd gen for Christmas. I can ask it 2 questions and on the third question it will start to answer then stop. Then sometimes I will ask a question and get "something went wrong ask again in a few seconds".

Started having the same problem on all 3 devices in my house. It's definitely a software issue

Just finished reading other people's comments and the only good part is knowing that the problem(s) are not with us (the end user) but are actually with Google itself. I would say that until the problems are properly resolved, these items should be taken off the market and not sold due to obvious flaws. Nothing has gotten any better with our 2 Google products. Both have a tendency to cut out in mid sentence. One has developed an obvious hearing problem which forces us to raise our voices and repeat the question. When this occurs, often the second unit which is in our bedroom will respond. Sometimes as others have noted, the unit will appear to just ignore your command or question and has developed an "attitude" like some adolencents. I'll ask for the weather or a song, etc and the unit will light up, which to me indicates that it has heard us but then the lights will flicker back and forth for a moment as if it is thinking of a response, but then lights go out completely with no reply.

At this point, there is no doubt that there will be no more Google products coming into our home. Judging by the number of complaints here, there must be 100s if not 1000s of these defective units floating around. Google appears in no hurry to repair the problem which is no doubt at their end. Will we be getting refunds for this stuff? Doubtful! Seems like my next set of smart speakers will have to come from a competing company.

Your comment about the hearing problem and attitude problems are absolutely spot-on!

The Problem: Google Nest worked fine when we got it. But for the last several weeks she keeps cutting off in the middle of a sentence. Sometimes she responds normally, but more often than not, she says a few words and then abruptly stops talking before you hear the answer. We have 3 Nests in different parts of the house that all used to work and now they all do this.

What I Tried:

Our internet is fast and consistent with strong WIFI signal, so I tried factory resetting the router.  Then I factory reset all 3 Nest Audios.

However, the problem persists. Any other suggestions?

Please can we not just back step the upgrade to the version that was working? Google are making themselves look so stupid and losing so many customers.

Fladge

Why is this non-solution from "Community Specialist Muddi" in April marked as an "accepted solution"?
All it has done is to cause people who are experiencing this problem to engage in pointless busywork.

I still have this problem.  I paid money for these devices expecting them to work as advertised just like every other consumer here.  They worked just fine when I bought them.

Solving it would be so simple.  After this long, it's likely to be a management issue.  "The Team" likely doesn't exist or hasn't been tasked with looking into it or maybe has it nailed down but is unable to get it rolled out.

Everyone who works on these devices in any capacity should be forced to actually use them at home as their primary google interface.  Things would improve fast.

Mine has started doing it too. I think it's been about a month now. Not sure how to fix it. Mucho frustrating

mpompey

If you have reset the device and it still happening, unfortunately there is nothing you can do.

Since none of us did anything to CAUSE these issues, there is nothing we can do to fix these issues.

Unfortunately we have to wait for Google's Devs to fix the issues.

StaceyJill
Community Member

Who are you?

You don't work for Google.

The only "fix" will be a letter from customers to, for example, wired.com techcrunch.com, gizmodo.com -to name a few.

If anyone else reads this, let's get this issue out there.

I doubt Muddi is real.

While I appreciate any kind of reply- there is no actual solution, nor "official" response. This has been going on  since December 2021!!!!    I'm not sure who "the team" is.  Knowing Google's penchant for abandonment of software, services, and  devices,  I'll be pessimistic and say there probably won't ever be.

We've all got better things to do.   I'm tired of troubleshooting, and sending feedback.    Devices are supposed to improve not degrade over time.   I'll continue to use it for alarms and home routines while that's at least still working.  But the writing is on the wall.   Will plan on cutting losses and look at other options.

Well said. Honestly what's going on?!? why they don't just make a decent update and that's it.

Problem persists and makes these devices near unuseable.  As other have noted, in addition to the cutoff response the devices often flash their lights for a long time before not responding or providing a cutoff response.  You can ask again and it answers quickly.  happens across my 9 devices ... frequently but not always!  considering a move to alexa
