Spoken broadcast message changed to spoken message??

realjax
Community Member

So when I broadcast a  spoken message to other devices in the house, the nest devices start to analyse the message and then change it to a spoken message using the google voice.  I know this sounds absurd and that is exactly what it is.  Why on earth would you want to change a spoken message into a.... spoken message??? Which 9 out of 10 times is wrong as well!! How do I turn this 'feature' off and prevent the home devices from trying to analyse spoken broadcast messages??

Hey everyone,

Great news! I'm thrilled to inform you that the broadcasting issue has been resolved. If you're still experiencing any problems, a quick reboot of your device could help. But, if the issue persists, do let us know by updating this thread.

Cheers,

Muddi

Same here!

Google Nest's broadcasts are now using Google Assistant's voice for us as well.

This just changed for us as well!

It seems that Google Nest:

1) Decided that it would no longer broadcast the customer's spoken voice,

2) Did NOT tell customers that it was making this change,

3) Decided to call this a "feature" (ha ha), and

4) Decided NOT to provide an option to go back to what we had previously.

Has Google actually stated this change or is this an educated guess based on Google's shady past?

@bch

On this thread on the same issue, a Google Nest Community Specialist said:

"Currently, we don’t have the option to turn this feature off."

File a complaint with the FTC. This means Google is transcribing our messages. Same as the pulsing lights meaning Google was stating in listening mode.

You can't. Google changed something again...without informing us. AGAIN.

@MplsCustomer: I appreciate you for sharing the link. I can confirm that this issue regarding broadcasting is not related to any additional support provided for the Nest Cam 1st gen.

What realjax said. What is the main thread as mine got merged away too.

Since my previous thread was closed by google with a 'say no more' comment, followed by no answer and the usual radio silence from google I am posting my question here once more:

I'm having the same issue, tried pretty much everything that's been suggested to try to fix the issue. Nothing works.

I'm honestly perplexed why Google would even bother implementing something like that.

They better restore it to how it was before asap.

This has been going on way too long and not an update to fix yet?

Can you at least put a link to the "main thread"

What is the 'main thread' then??

We are struggling with this issue since we have purchased our 5 minis and nests, but recently it got to unbearable levels. We are speaking in a language not supported by Google, and making the devices tell our broadcasts verbatim is an enormous pain now. I have to try 4-5 forms of my message, until it gives up interpeting, and allow forwarding my voice. Poor kids always perceive I am angry over the speakers, because when I finally get there, Google already made me! If you want to scrape our data with "broadcast", it's fine, but you MUST introduce another keyword that just simply forwards the audio said after, without hesitation and delay.

Preach. This is exactly what happens to me. NO replies to my concerns either.

Three weeks ago you said the Google Nest "team is aware of this and looking into this issue at hand. You’ll receive all updates on this issue on the main thread."

Is there any update on this issue and the circumstances under which it occurs? (It happened to us for awhile, but then resumed using our own voices a couple of weeks ago.)

This is happening to our speakers too.  We have been using this facility for years and suddenly it has stopped using our voices and started translating - and very badly at that.  It really is quite annoying- we didn’t change anything and it just stopped.

Since we are being actively ignored, perhaps we should use this thread to discuss ALTERNATIVES to this garbage. I for one would be very willing to switch to a competitor after this treatment. Any deals out there, anyone?

That's a great idea, I'm open to alternatives. Anyone have any experience with the Amazon Echo range? I've read that it broadcasts messages in the voice of the person broadcasting. There's black friday sales now and Boxing day sales are also coming soon, we should be able to nab some bargains on a bunch of them.

Exentio

I bought two Echos for my grandma, an Echo Show 5 and an Echo Pop.
Cons: harder to configure with Home Assistant
Pros: ... well, everything else. I used to be a Google Home fanatic, but they don't understand ANYTHING anymore and they break useful features on purpose calling this going backward a "feature". They're also very sensitive, more fun to use, and have great features that Google lacks, like asking for the status of a timer from a different device.
Get those Echos if you're not too invested in the Google ecosystem, doubt you'll regret it considering the status of Google Home.

I am heavily invested in Google.  However, it's at the point where it's so frustrating to use. Looking at transitioning during black Friday deals or boxing day.

Getting sick and tired of my family complaining and asking me why features suck so bad.

JChong

If it'll solve this annoyance in my life, it's perfect. Plus, I have Amazon Prime so I'll be able to tap into Prime music and videos. I'm definitely going to get into the Echo world then.

Thanks for the recommendation!

The one major problem with Amazon's echo stuff is it very limited language support.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updates here. I understand this issue with broadcasting has been ongoing for quite some time, and I apologize for the inconvenience it has caused so far. At the moment, our team is on top of this, but I have no additional updates to share right now. I’ll continue checking in with the team and updating this thread as soon as I can.

Cheers,

Muddi

Just adding that the same thing is happening here and only started happening a few weeks ago

can you update if this change is a bug of a feature?
this made the broadcast completely useless for so many people that i sure do hope it's a bug and the team is working on resolving this asap.

This is a ridiculous issue. The beauty of the broadcast feature was that you could tell who was sending it to you by hearing the sender's voice. Now, I have no idea who is sending it nor is there a tone and/or tempo to the voice message.

realjax

You say 'your team is on top of this' as if we are talking about some sort of bug that needs investigating. But this is not a bug. This is a deliberate change in functionality. Why the evasive responses all the time?. What happened to google's mantra 'dont be evil?'

Ste57x
Community Member

I am confused.  The broadcast facility was working and now it isn't, which means it was either deliberate design change or an upgrade fault .  Either way, why not revert to the software release before it broke or it was designed out? plus, if it wasn't a design change, then who tested the system?

The whole family find this really annoying...

This is the biggest use case my family has for Google Home's along with music streaming.  It needs to  be fixed!

Muddy, could you explain us why it takes so long to fix this? or why they would have removed the intercom function??? this is so weird. it would push a lot of consumer to seek another solution/brand

any update, this is a vital feature for this system to operate as intended.

Thank you for at least FINALLY acknowledging that this is an issue. It has taken a very long time to get to this point, so allow me to add my voice to the chorus of people who have this as their primary use of the nest audio environment, and for whom this change has rendered that use totally inoperable as a primarily non English household.

Is there an update? It shouldn't be too hard too roll back to a working state.

"our team is on top of this..."  No, your team is not on top of this. It has been going on for far too long for anyone to have been putting any real effort into it.  Manager(s), I'm talking to you.

My own guess is that Google has become too large to manage its products well. Corporate says "prepare all Assistant speech for input to Bard", and no one is willing to bring up the ol' "the king has no clothes" story.  What a debacle.`
