Why do Google Mini and Nest devices broadcast WiFi SSID when already connected to my network?

I finally got to ask this - since it have been bothering me for years.

My three Nests (1 mini, 1 Hub, 1Hub 2nd gen) broadcasts their own SSIDs and it is quite irritating and I guess it could be a safety-issue as well.

  • They all have high/stable reception from the closest access-point
  • They use both open(!) and WPA2 broadcasts (see screenshot)
  • None have reported any network error or problems with connection.

So, how do I turn this off? I understand it need to have this when being set up - but after that I do not want it to broadcast its own SSID... ever! 😉

Thank you in advance!

Hi Idus,

Thanks for the photo. To confirm, where are you seeing the SSIDs in the photo? Are you able to see the SSID of your 3 Nest speakers when you go to your phone’s Wi-Fi settings?

We'll be waiting for your reply.

Best,

Dan

The screenshot is from a surround SSID-scan on my Ubiquiti UniFi router/firewall from my different APs. The broadcast seem to come and go though - and have been doing so for several years now.

Best regards,

Hi Idus,

Thanks for the details you provided. At the moment the option to hide Google Nest speakers and display’s personal hotspot is a feature that is not available. We appreciate people who are keen on sharing their thoughts with us. We're always looking for ways to improve. I'd suggest you submit feedback about it, here's how.

Let us know if you have other questions and concerns otherwise, we will be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Thanks,

Ok  this might be a security issue since it creates a door to a system that have access to another network. Strange it have not been addressed before if you are aware of it?

So the official statement about this is that you are aware of the security issue that it can pose and do not intend to fix it?

Best regards,

/Fredrik

Hi Idus,

Thanks for the response. We understand that you are concerned about security but the signal that your Nest speakers are emitting is encrypted. Once it is set up you can access your Nest speakers if you are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Hi there,

It's been some time since this thread was updated. Does anyone here need assistance?

As I understand it - there is no solution, just confirmation that the Nest is incapable to turn it´s SSID broadcasting off in contrary to most other WiFi products. So might as well shut down the thread. 😞
