CCwGTV blacks out after a period of time.

Using a Chromecast with Google TV running Android TV v12, Patch level April 1, 2024.

We can watch streamed input from an Android (Samsung) tablet for a period of time when the CCwGTV goes black.  Only remedy is to unplug it and then plug it back.  Casting has to reconnect and stream continues.  This will then happen again in a shorter period of time.  The CCwGTV seems hot at that time.

We don't have issues watching the stream on the tablet.

Any idea what the problem is, or is the CCwGTV just failing?

Hi hectop,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are having issues with your Chromecast with Google TV. I’d be happy to help you. Let’s check it out.

A warm Chromecast that goes black screen or does not display video can be caused by a few factors. Here's how to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Overheating:

  • Possible Cause: Chromecasts can get warm during normal operation, but excessive heat can cause shutdowns.

2. Power Issues:

  • Possible Cause: An insufficient power supply or a faulty cable can cause the Chromecast to malfunction.
  • Solutions:
    • Use the Original Power Adapter: Ensure you're using the power adapter that came with your Chromecast. Third-party adapters might not provide enough power.
    • Connect to a Wall Outlet: Avoid connecting the Chromecast to a USB port on your TV, as they might not provide enough power. Plug it directly into a wall outlet.
    • Try a Different Cable: If possible, try using a different USB cable to connect the Chromecast to the power adapter.

3. Software Issues:

  • Possible Cause: Outdated Chromecast firmware or bugs in the casting app can sometimes lead to instability.
  • Solutions:
    • Update Chromecast Firmware: Chromecast firmware updates are usually automatic, but you can check for updates manually in the Google Home app. Open the app, tap on your Chromecast device, and go to "Settings" > "System" > "Software update."
    • Restart Chromecast: I understand that you already tried restarting your Chromecast. Unplug it from the power source for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
    • Restart Casting App: Close and relaunch the casting app you're using on your tablet.

You can also follow this good article if the TV has no signal or only shows a black screen or Reboot your Chromecast device.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Mario

Sorry for late response.

I am using the power plug/cable that came with the device.  It is plugged directly into the wall.  Although nothing is plugged into the 2nd socket, the circuit likely supplies other plugs.  Not much I can do about that.

As far as I can see, I'm running the latest software on the device  Checking for updates, it reports the device is up to date.

Unplugging the CC will show the stream for a period of time but will then display a black screen again.

What seems to have helped was a factory reset and to delete a number of apps that seem to be installed by default.  I haven't done extensive viewing after doing this though.

Hi hectop,

I understand your frustration with the Chromecast with Google TV not working even after troubleshooting. I apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing. As the last resort please make sure if the reset was completed as instructed based on the How to factory reset your Chromecast guide.

With the Chromecast Voice Remote

  1. On the top right of your TV screen, select your profile and then Settings .
  2. Select System and then About and then Factory Reset.

From the Chromecast device

  1. While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV and powered, press and hold the button on the back of the Chromecast. The LED should start to blink yellow.
  2. When the LED light turns solid white, release the button, and the Chromecast should then reset.

If it was already followed as instructed, to assist you better, we'll need some additional information. I'm sending you a secure form where you can provide all the necessary details and also please fill out all the information required.

Here's the contact us form.

Once you've completed the form, please let me know. This will allow us to investigate the issue further and find a solution.

We haven't experienced the issue for a little while but in the past two days it has started again.

The device works fine for a couple of hours, then needs to be rebooted.  After the first reboot, it needs to be rebooted every 30 minutes or so
