Recently, the last several days, several of our schools have reported that when they try to exit the Cast Moderator app (on a Chromecast with Google TV), instead of the expected behavior of exiting back to the main Google TV homepage / menus screen, they are instead being directed just to the Device Settings page. They then try to back out of the Settings screen, and just get taken back into Cast Moderator. This process continues to repeat, and so our users can only access cast moderator and the Settings screen, but have no way of getting back to the main Google TV home screen in order to attempt to open any other installed Apps, etc. Is this a known recent bug with Chromecast with Google TV? Or is Cast Moderator being deprecated, and we maybe need to factory reset these devices? Has anyone else experienced this issue recently? If anyone has some helpful information on this about why it might be happening and/or how to fix it, please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you, and looking forward to everyone's feedback on this matter. Hopefully we can get this sorted out in the near future.

We are a experiencing the same issue at our K12 school.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the suggestions.
Upon Factory Resetting the Chromecast with Google TV device and then setting it back up again (with Cast Moderator set up again), I briefly had the ability to close Cast Moderator back to the main Google TV homescreen again.
With that said, I think it was most likely just due to the Google TV OS and/or Cast Moderator app versions being rolled back slightly due to the Reset.
The next morning, I came back, powered the Chromecast on again, and (I'm assuming because the latest updates got pushed back onto the device again) at that time Cast Moderator was back to not letting me return to the Google TV Homescreen again. When I press the Back button on the remote, it now says something like "Exit Cast Moderator and enter Device Settings" whereas before it would just say something like "Exit Cast Moderator app" and I'd click OK and get back to the Home Screen where I could access other apps, etc.
If possible, could you confirm whether or not this is expected behavior for the newly updated Cast Moderator?
I'd just like to know 100% one way or the other if we can now only set up Cast Moderator on Chromecast with Google TV devices that we don't intend on using additional apps with, or if there should still be a way to get back to the main Google TV screen, even with these latest updates to TV OS and/or Cast Moderator.
If necessary, I'd be more than happy to jump onto a Google Meet video chat with you or someone from the Engineering team involved with Cast Moderator in order to get this sorted out in a timely manner.
Once again, thank you for your response, and looking forward to hearing back from you again soon.
Take care,
Brett

I have Chromecasts setup in a school environment. They used to work great but now staff have to enter a code every time they want to connect to the Chromecast setup with Cast Moderator. I know I have all the settings correct in Google Workspace/Admin.
IS there a fix for this??

Upon setting up Cast Moderator, the Google Chromecast allows the user to operate individual apps including cast moderator with the ability to return back to the home screen. However, after about 24 hours (give or take), the user gets stuck on the Cast Moderator app. Upon pushing the home button, it displays that they will be taken to settings. This appears to be occurring with all of our Cast Moderator enrolled Chromecasts. Cast Moderator works great, but we need the functionality to access the home screen for additional apps. Has anyone else run into this before? This functionality worked fine only recently.
(Factory resetting the Chromecast does not fix this issue)

I'm having the same issue with our Chromecast at are school. Did you solve this or find anything out? Thanks.

Same issue at our school, re-installing moderator on 70+ Chromecasts isn't an option for what appears to be a software update. What is the real fix?

Same issue here, I have no answers from Google support. Workspace support wants to pass you to Nest, Nest wants to pass you to wrokspace support. No one seems to have an answer.

@kcruzgonzalez, is there anyone you can contact at Google on our behalf to get a better answer for us regarding this issue? Sure would be nice to get a definitive answer.
FYI, for those wondering, unfortunately, for the time being, I've had to Factory Reset our CCWGTV devices which need access to other apps (for digital signage on Hallway TVs, etc.), and just set them back up again without Cast Moderator.
Luckily a majority of our CCWGTVs are implemented in Classrooms for our Staff to screen cast from their devices while teaching, and the only functionality they need is Cast Moderator, so no Reset required at this time for any of those ones.
Anyways, here's hoping we get a better answer sometime soon.

We are having the same issue as well.

Same thing happening with a Chromecast I have with cast moderator. Sounds like we are all waiting for a real fix instead restart/reset.

Same issue with our classrooms. No ability to access the GoogleTV Home Screen - only Cast Moderator and a general settings page. We have 85 of these GoogleTV devices deployed to our classrooms who use the with Cast Moderator primarily, but in some cases, teachers will leverage other applications (which they can no longer access on the device).

Same Issue. Seems like a problem they have no answer for. Kind of annoying.

Was hopeful that messages about this topic being merged recently might mean something had changed.
But my one Chromecast is still behaving the same, and I'm just glad that I had not rolled out any of these into classrooms, due to a lack of anyone at Google fixing anything when they break their own stuff.

So we are experiencing the same thing at our schools, however it is a welcome feature. Cast Moderator was meant to make a streamlined experience with the classroom without having other parts of the Google TV interferring with it. Now that it only stays in Cast Moderator makes it where I don't have it bouncing out to the main Google home screen that we don't want to see or have students signing in to the Chromecast on apps to watch stuff. Since Cast Moderator had issues dropping out of the Cast Moderator app when casting youtube or turning it on and off again it seems like this resolves it. I feel like if you are constantly getting out of the Cast Moderator app to do other tasks, then it is defeating the purpose of having it right? You might as well just set the Chromecast up normally. Having it take over the Chromecast makes it better for Cast Moderator. Now of course Google should do a better job of informing people on this instead of going silent like they love to do.

Agreed with NatetheITGuy, this is exactly the feature we want..however we have a mixed bag of results. Seems to be something with the update versions. Ver:1.4.697533439 dated Oct 18, 2024, makes this operation the feature set. You basically can only use the moderator app (again, we want that). However ver: 1.4.720760385, dated Feb 10, 2025 gives you access to the Home Screen (we want to disable that). No rhyme or reason that we can find as to why some devices see the Oct ver and some see the Feb version. Both devices, running each different version also report they are up to date and no updates available.
