Chromecast HD Wi-Fi download speed very slow

I have a Chromecast HD connected to TV via HDMI. Running latest firmware.  Eero Wi-Fi router (also latest firmware) located approx. 4 metres away in same room, unobstructed. ISP speeds 150mbps download and 30mbps upload. At first, everything works great and I get full download and upload speeds. However, after a while, download speed significantly drops to around 5 to 10 mbps typically. Upload remains the same. The only way to get the download speed up again is by restarting the Chromecast. No other Wi-Fi devices are affected. Full signal strength at all times. I have tried adjusting the position of the Chromecast, flipping it over etc but it makes no difference. Any ideas?

Hey @DavidSilveria77,

Is this a new issue or something that has been happening ever since it was installed? One thing that has worked for me is to forget the Wi-Fi network in the settings and then add it again. This usually works and restores a solid Wi-Fi connection.

With the signal dropping in speeds, did you notice this from constant buffering or just through speed tests?

Thanks,

Brett

Hey Brett,

I’ve had the Chromecast maybe a few months. I think it has done it since new.

Sometimes I notice videos get a little choppy, which is usually when I run the speed tests.

I will try forgetting and reconnecting Wi-Fi, thanks!

David

Sorry I having problem with my tv I can fixed I have the fire stick control I don’t know how to set up

Just to update on this.  I deleted the Wi-Fi connection and connected again. Same issue - started off with full speed downloads but it has dropped to the 20 - 30 mbps range now.  Videos playing OK still, but it does make me wonder why the performance drops over time.

HI DavidSilveria77,

Thank you for posting here in the community. I'm sorry that you're experiencing troubles with a low Wi-Fi speed on your Chromecast HD. I understand how frustrating that can be. I really appreciate the assistance in troubleshooting the situation. I'm here to help you troubleshoot the situation.

Here are a few suggestions to improve your connection:

  • If your router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, make sure your streaming device is on the 5 GHz network.
  • Restart your streaming device. Unplug the power cable, wait 3 seconds, and plug the power cable back in.
  • To help prevent Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference, move your streaming device further away from your TV. Also, don't let it touch other devices, wires, or cables.
  • Use an Ethernet adapter to connect your streaming device to your router. This will give you a direct, hardwired connection to the internet and alleviate your home Wi-Fi network.
  • Check that your wireless network can support the number of devices connected to it.
  • As a last resort, you can factory reset your streaming device.

Keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Byron
