Chromecast MAC address

Rosanna_Rose

Hi there,

I am trying to connect my chromecast to my TV - I live in an apartment building with shared wifi across the building. I have contacted the internet service provider and they have asked for the MAC address so they can add it to the network.

I have clicked the 3 dots during setup and selected "show MAC address" an error message comes up and says "unable to get MAC address from device. Please look at the device itself." There is no MAC address on the device or packaging.

Help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Chromecast doesn't support those kind of Wifi networks that require you to login first or register devices to be able to access the internet. Chromecast with Google TV uses something called MAC randomisation by default, and it's per Wifi network. You can't turn that feature off without first connecting to the Wifi network, which you won't be able to do if your internet service provider uses MAC filtering. There are a couple of possible solutions for this:

  1. Although unsupported by Google, you can try to use a phone or tablet as a Wifi hotspot. However, this will then use your mobile data plan, which could be expensive for you depending on the data plan you have with your carrier. Note you will need 2 devices to set this up.
    • Turn on the Wifi hotspot feature on a phone or tablet. If you're not sure how to do this, refer to the manufacturer's support website.
    • Connect a second phone or tablet to that Wifi hotspot.
    • You can then use that second phone or tablet to setup your device and connect it to the Wifi hotspot on the first phone or tablet.
  2. If you're able to use  a wired network connection instead, you could invest in your own cheap router and connect your devices to that router instead.
