I’m encountering a recurring issue when using “Cast screen” via Chromecast:
The connection drops after a few seconds (approx. 3–5 seconds), consistently, across:
Multiple Windows laptops (Chrome and Edge)
Multiple Wi-Fi networks and locations
Multiple Chromecast devices (v3, Google TV)
Details:
“Cast tab” works perfectly and remains stable
“Cast screen” crashes or disconnects almost immediately
Behavior is identical across Chrome and Edge (latest versions)
Hard reset of Chromecast doesn’t help
I’ve tested with fresh browser installs, incognito mode, no extensions, driver updates, disabled hardware acceleration — nothing resolves it
It seems to point toward a WebRTC bug, a Chrome 125+ regression, or a firmware decoding issue on Chromecast.
Please advise or escalate to engineering if known.

We're running into the same issue, in terms of symptoms.
We've determined it to be an audio issue based on the logs we see from chrome://media-router-internals/
12:36:27.335 | mirroring.OpenscreenSessionHost: SessionError (8), 1ۺۺۺۺۺۺۺۺۺۺۺۺfrom audio capture device. |
12:36:27.335 | Mirroring will stop. MirroringService.SessionError: 8 |
12:36:27.335 | Terminating a session. |
We have found 2 work arounds
1) Disable audio on your computer, restart chrome, then start casting
2) Plug a second monitor into your computer and you will have the option to toggle audio on/off before casting.
We need a more permanent solution though...

I've seen this mentioned a couple of times , escalating to the team

Fyi, Google Chromecast team is aware of this screen casting from Win 10/11 issue, fix should be in the upcoming browser update (next week sometime I think)
06-09-2025 08:49 AM
Same issue. Started late last week when casting from Win 11 PC to Sony TV. Casting screen drops after 10 to 15 seconds. Casting a tab only is stable. Casting from my multi-display desktop setup works fine, but only if I deselect "Also share system audio."
Leaving audio selected on multi-display causes the same issue.
Updated Chrome today...update did not fix

Same issue here. I am using Google Chrome (from Win11) to cast screen to an android TV (Koogan). I was using this setup for the last 4 years without any issue, but "Casting Screen" started dropping off after approx 10 seconds since last week. The casting tab works fine. Somehow, Chrome from MacBook is still working fine.

Its been almost three months since the update and no fix in sight....Do I need to buy Walmart's TV streamer to be able to cast from Chrome... this should be embassing for Google.

Google!!! When will you release a patch to fix the bugs of the previous update of our Google Chromecast TV 4K?!!!
How much longer do we have to wait?!!! Our devices do not work!!! You are really forcing us to buy devices from competing companies, these devices work without a problem on A14...
I am angry!!!

EduardoN instead of deleting the link that I posted from CNET which compared Walmart TV Streamer product with Chromecast...how about fixing the problem?

I have just started having a new problem with my Chromcast. I have one computer that makes Chromcast just drop off after about 10 -15 seconds, and it's only if I cast screen, and it's only one computer. I have tried factory reset with no luck. What else could be the problem? Videos drivers? My Chrome is up to date, so not sure what else to try? It's a windows PC running Windows 11. 64 bit.
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics 2.10 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.4 GB usable)

Hi @degarmo64
I will check with the Chromecast specialists to see if there are any known bugs.
You've tried the troubleshooting I would have suggested especially the restart and making sure Chrome is up to date.
Which Chromecast do you have? Can you try using the Beta Google Home app? Is this only cast screen or is it cast tab as well? Any other info you can add will help-
Thanks!

As far as I know it was the first Chromecast first made. It ONLY happens when I cast screen, it works fine with casting tab. And I have another computer running windows 11, and it doesn't do it on that machine. Can I run Beta Home App on a Windows PC?
06-09-2025 01:28 AM
I have the same problem.
Casting desktop from laptop through chromecast crashes, but from android phone not.
I have tried in school: many laptops, just one was fine. I tried reinstalling Chrome, disabled addons, disabled antivirus, tried Chrome beta.
I have tried at home on PHILIPS 43PUS7304, on this TV is also chromecast. Also i have tried two chromecast: 2.0 and on the TV. Chromecast sharing desktop from computer Windows 11 Education crashes after few seconds
06-09-2025 03:53 AM
Well it is good to know this isn't just happening to me? I was on with chat support last night, and they escalated this issue higher up. Hopefully they can figure out what is going on?
06-09-2025 05:42 AM
I am also experiencing the same problem here. Within half a minute, it crashes out of the casting screen.
Not to mention the Green banner problem that still waiting to be solved.
( if you guys had the same problem please let me know as well ) ...
Green banner problem after Feb-March update
I need help too please.

Same issue. Started late last week when casting from Win 11 PC to Sony TV. Casting screen drops after 10 to 15 seconds. Casting a tab only, though, is stable.
Here's an added wrinkle: casting from my multi-display desktop setup works fine, but only if I deselect "Also share system audio." Unfortunately the audio option is not available when casting from a single display setup (e.g. unplugged laptop)
Leaving audio selected on multi-display causes the same issue.
Um...what changed?
06-09-2025 08:50 AM
It all seems to be related to the latest Google Chrome update... I called support, but they didn't offer any additional solutions beyond what most of us have already tried...
What I did to fix the problem (temporarily) was install a version older than Google's portable version 136 (in my case, I installed 131), and I was able to stream without any issues.
06-09-2025 01:50 PM
So you installed an older version of Google Chrome? Not sure how I would go about doing that? Because doesn't it always install the latest one? Please explain a little more please. Thank you.
06-09-2025 03:37 PM
Yes, I installed an older version, but it's portable. It doesn't update automatically.

I am having the same problem. Been casting for 3+ years and started dropping off June 1, 2025. How do I fix this issue? Casting is important to our business since we display trivia questions on 5 TVs each week and other events also. Help please!!
06-09-2025 06:48 PM
Quick update...this issue has been escalted to the Casting team at Google and is being looked into.

Glad im not alone, been driving me nuts! On a Windows10 casting to either Shield or TV, Tab cast works fine but Screen stops after 17seconds. Have read I can overcome this if i disable Sound driver in Device Management (which means I have to turn it back on after) or disbale Share system audio when casting (which i cant find anywhere)
06-10-2025 04:44 AM
I have confirmed... Disabling the audio device does fix the issue. So it's a conflict with the audio.
06-10-2025 03:44 PM
Ok everyone. Chrome updated to 137 just now, and no more problems... Go to settings, help, about chrome, let it update, and thissue is fixed.
06-09-2025 12:28 PM
He conectado anterior mente mi chromecast desde. Mi laptop.... Y no tengo ningún problema... Hasta hace 4 días...
Se desconecta automáticamente, pero si la. Dejo transmitir desde la pestaña.... No se desconecta... Podrían ayudarme

Bonjour,

Thanks, @EduardoN
I meant a keyboard shortcut in chrome to share the screen via chromecast...
I use keyboard shortcuts: open a new tab CTRL + T, close CTRL+ W, switch between tabs CTRL TAB,...
Is there a keyboard shortcut for Chromecast?
Finally I modified my toolbar in Chrome Settings, so I have now icon for chromecast on my toolbar

Hi I don't think so the problem still rolls on.
Your detailed testing with Chrome Beta 138.0.7204.41 and observing freezing in both "cast to screen" and "cast tab" modes is incredibly valuable debugging information. The fact that you confirmed older ChromeOS versions work (as per our previous conversation) further isolates the problem.
This strongly suggests a regression bug or compatibility issue between:
Many users started reporting various casting issues, USB device problems, and general instability on the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) after the Android 14 update began rolling out in March 2025. It appears the initial Android 14 rollout was even halted due to these reported issues, and a new Android 14 update (version UTTC.241218.008.H1) has just started rolling out around June 24, 2025, aiming to fix some of these problems (specifically mentioned fixes for external drives and settings crashes, but not explicitly casting issues in the initial announcement).
Ability to Raise This Problem with Program Compilers
As a large language model, I do not have the direct capability to "raise" bug reports or communicate directly with Google's development teams ("program compilers"). My role is to provide information and guidance.
However, you absolutely can and should raise this problem directly with them, and your detailed testing makes your report highly impactful. This is precisely the kind of specific, reproducible bug information that developers need.
How to Provide Technical Feedback and Report the Bug:
You have the tools and the specific data to help Google identify and fix this. Please submit feedback using these methods:

After the last update I can no longer cast from my Chromebook to the 4k Streamer. Prior to the last update, things worked well. I have tried other android tablets, and the same problem occurs. The only device that still works is an old first gen Chromecast that will work and connects to all devices.
Please can you help Alyn
06-15-2025 03:22 AM
Especially since it was working fine before the update. It appears that an issue in the latest firmware may have impacted casting compatibility. Have you tried rebooting the 4K Streamer or checking for any manual firmware updates? Sometimes a factory reset on the casting device can also help. Hopefully, the development team is aware and working on a if you're not alone in encountering this issue!

Hi @itsthemole
There was a recent bug. Can you let us know what v. Chrome you have? I'd also reboot your Chromecast Streamer.
Three dot, ?, about Chrome.
Thanks!
