Chromecast doesn't show up

I have Chromecast ultra that had been working for last few years. But for last 3-4 days, it doesn't show up on my apps (Netflix, YouTube, etc) as an option. I have another Chromecast that's working fine. No changes in the home WiFi network. I have restarted the device... Didn't help.

I have factory reset the device and it worked for one session. Later on, when I tried again -- same problem.

The device is connected to WiFi and I can see the photos coming up with the usual frequency. Also, I can see the device on "Google Home" app and it shows the same photos that are on the TV at the moment. But still, none of the apps show this device as a cast option. And obviously, I can't factory reset every time I want to watch TV.

Any suggestions?

Hey Rri,

Have a go at these troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Check for Interference: Ensure that there is no interference from other electronic devices near your Chromecast Ultra. Also, make sure your router is not too far from the device.

  2. Update Google Home App: Make sure the Google Home app on your phone is up to date. Sometimes, app updates resolve connectivity issues.

  3. Check Device Settings: Ensure that both your casting device (phone, tablet, etc.) and the Chromecast are connected to the same WiFi network. Double-check that your WiFi network is set to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz and that both the Chromecast and your device are on the same band.

  4. Restart Router: Restart your router to refresh the network connection. Unplug the router, wait for about 10 seconds, then plug it back in and wait for it to fully restart.

  5. Use Different Device: Try casting from a different device to see if the issue is specific to one device or if it's a broader problem.

  6. Network Settings: Ensure your router’s firewall settings are not blocking the Chromecast. You might need to allow specific ports that Chromecast uses (TCP/UDP ports 8008-8009 and 5353).

  7. Update Chromecast Firmware: Make sure your Chromecast Ultra is running the latest firmware. This can be checked in the Google Home app under the device settings.

  8. Disable AP Isolation: On some routers, AP (Access Point) isolation might be enabled, which can prevent devices on the network from communicating with each other. Ensure this setting is disabled in your router’s settings.

  9. Reinstall Apps: Uninstall and reinstall the apps that you are trying to cast from (Netflix, YouTube, etc.) on your casting device.

Let me know if any of these steps worked.

Hello @cleoschung,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I know how hard it is that your Chromecast shows no casting device connected, so let me help you check what's happening with your Chromecast.

There are a few reasons why your Chromecast might not be showing up as a casting device. Here are some steps you can troubleshoot to fix the issue:

1. Basic Checks:

Power and Connection:

  • Ensure your Chromecast is plugged into power and properly connected to your HDMI port on the TV.
  • Verify your Chromecast is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the device you're casting from (phone, tablet, computer).

Restart Devices:

  • Power cycle your Chromecast by unplugging it from the power source for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.
  • Restart the device you're casting from (phone, tablet, computer).

2. App and Device Updates:

Chromecast Update:

  • Most Chromecasts update automatically, but you can check for updates using the Google Home app:
    1. Open the Google Home app.
    2. Tap on your Chromecast icon.
    3. Look for a "Settings" or "Device Settings" option.
    4. Check for available updates and install if necessary.

Casting App Update:

  • Ensure the app you're using to cast (e.g., YouTube, Netflix) is updated to the latest version on your casting device.

3. Network Troubleshooting:

  • Strong Wi-Fi Signal:
    • Make sure your Chromecast and casting device have a strong and stable Wi-Fi signal. Try moving them closer to your router if necessary.
  • Restart Router:
    • Sometimes a simple router restart can resolve network connectivity issues. Power cycle your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.

4. Advanced Troubleshooting (if comfortable):

  • Factory Reset Chromecast:
    • This will erase all settings on your Chromecast and return it to its original state. This can be a last resort if other solutions fail. You can follow the steps here: How to factory reset your Chromecast.

Please let me know how it goes. Thank you

Regards,
