Hello,
I have had my Chromecast for roughly 5 years now and in the last 2-3 months I have been having a really bad experience with youtube videos. When casting from my Android phone, from the youtube app, when I'm watching the second video in the line/playlist it skips back to the first video of the list. This happens randomly at times without even touching my phone or when leaving the YT app while casting to go to a different app (e.g going to home and opening something else).
This happens at random and I've tried to change ports from my Chromecast, re-download and delete cache and data from my youtube app on phone (Android phone). Interestingly, the issue doesn't happen with my iPad.
What I am thinking the issue could be is when a video skips from auto play the next video or from advancing in the playlist and you leave the app by hitting the home button or other triggering actions of picture-in-picture on phone the video, being casted on chromecast, is skipped back to the first video of the line.
Does this theory makes sense or is there anything else I could be doing in order to make it stop skipping randomly?

Hi @igorklaus,
Thank you for reaching out to the Google Nest Community. I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties watching YouTube videos on your Chromecast. I understand how frustrating it can be when a device you rely on malfunctions. Let's work together to figure out the issue you're experiencing. To help with that, I have a few questions for you:
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
Please let me know the answers to the questions above and the results of these troubleshooting steps. I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

@sicsacol I am experiencing the exact same issue as @igorklaus . I have a Samsung Galaxy S20+ with Android 13. My Chromecast is a regular Chromecast 3rd gen. with firmware version 1.56.291998. When I stream from the Youtube app I experience the app changing videos to previously watched videos even though I have removed them from the active "queue" in the Youtube app. This happens extremely sporadically and even when I am not interacting with my phone.
This is only an issue when using Chromecast, it never happens while watching Youtube locally on my phone or when casting from any other apps, as it only affects the "queue" function which applies when casting from Youtube.
Your suggested troubleshooting steps aren't really helpful, as the whole point is to maintain a good experience while casting from an Android phone. Using a laptop to cast from is not an option, atleast not in my case.
Regards,
Thomas

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your reply.
@bardust, Have you attempted a factory reset on your Chromecast yet? If so, does the problem persist? That's correct, casting YouTube from a computer helps us isolate the issue to the YouTube app on your phone or tablet, rather than the Chromecast itself.
Based on the information you've provided and your troubleshooting efforts, contacting YouTube support might be the best next step. They have access to internal versions and can potentially see more detailed information related to the YouTube app.
Please let me know if you have any questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.
Cheers,
Jonathan

Hey @bardust, interestingly enough I have the same phone & Chromecast model as you do and from where these issues were coming from (coincidence or compatibility issue?).
Anyhow, I performed a factory reset on my Chromecast and it seems to have stopped the skipping issue, at least for now. Just hold the small button on your Chromecast until the light stops blinking and set it up again.
Hope this helps!
Igor.

Hello again,
I was able to get a laptop and attempted to recreate similar viewing conditions as when I use my phone. I did not experience any issues during the time I was able to allocate, which was a couple hours.
I may be able to attempt a factory reset later today. Given the sporadic nature of the issue it may take a couple hours at each attempt to be sure of any observed behaviour.
Will keep you posted of any findings. With @igorklaus reporting that a factory reset mitigated the issue, I expect their issue will return when the Chromecast updates itself? It would be interesting to attempt an older version of the Youtube app together with the latest Chromecast firmware, but not sure if this is possible...
Edit: I uninstalled updates from my Youtube app, so I went from version 19.26.37 to 18.12.34. Trying to force the issue now. I have not done anything with the Chromecast yet, one factor at a time 👍

@sicsacol I did not experience any issues with the older version of the Youtube app. I will contact the Youtube support with this issue as well. I guess since @igorklaus had improvements when factory resetting his Chromecast it may be a compatibility issue and difficult to pinpoint on which end the issue lies, but...
Do you have any possible solutions other than patching the firmware?

Thomas

Hi @bardust,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm glad to hear that switching to the previous version of the YouTube app resolved the issue.
However, at this time, I don't have any further alternative solutions. It's possible there might be a compatibility issue between your Samsung phone and the current YouTube app version.
Here are some recommendations:
