Chromecast stopped working. Factory Reset broke it further. Please help!

Subject says it all, but here's more details...

My Chromecast had been working great for about a year, then it got stuck in a reboot loop. It would turn on and reach the home screen, but I couldn't get to the settings menu using the remote before it crashed again. So I searched the forums and tried the factory reset using the button on the device. After a factory reset, the light is flashing white as though it's ready to be set up, but it is not sending any signal to the TV, not showing up in the Google Home App for configuration, and not sending any wifi signal to be set up in Chrome on a computer.

Is this bricked now? Can I send it back to Google and get one that works? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello @TheMoonRules,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Chromecast is stuck in a reboot loop and is not sending any signal to your TV or being discoverable after you've tried a factory reset. I understand how frustrating it must be to not even be able to get it to display anything. I'm here to help you troubleshoot this.

Before we start, I will ask you a few questions to better understand the issue.

  1. Is your Chromecast streaming device plugged directly into the TV's HDMI port? If it isn't, where is it plugged into (e.g., an AV receiver, an HDMI splitter, or a soundbar)?

  2. Do you have an audio/video receiver (AVR) connected to your TV setup?

  3. Is the black screen or no signal an intermittent issue (meaning it comes and goes), or is it constant now?

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Reboot your Chromecast streaming device and your TV.

    • To do this for your Chromecast, unplug its power cable from the wall outlet, wait for about one minute, and then plug it back in.

    • To reboot your TV, unplug your TV's power cable from the wall outlet, wait for about one minute, and then plug it back in.

    • Once both are powered back on, check if the Chromecast now displays a signal.

  2. If applicable, use a different HDMI port on the TV.

    • Unplug your Chromecast from its current HDMI port on your TV.

    • Plug your Chromecast into a different HDMI port on the same TV.

    • Switch your TV's input to that new HDMI port and check if the Chromecast now displays a signal.

  3. If applicable, test the Chromecast streaming device on another TV.

    • If you have another TV available, please try connecting your Chromecast to a different TV.

    • Plug the Chromecast into an HDMI port on the second TV and ensure it's powered correctly.

    • Check if the Chromecast displays a signal on the second TV.

  4. Perform a factory reset on your Chromecast.

    • (Note: You mentioned you tried this already, but please confirm if you performed it again after trying the above steps.)

    • While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV and powered on, press and hold the button on the side of the Chromecast device.

    • Continue holding the button until the LED light on the Chromecast starts blinking white (it will first blink yellow).

    • Release the button. The Chromecast should then continue the factory reset process.

    • Check if the Chromecast now displays a signal or can be set up in the Google Home app.

Please let me know the answer to the questions and the results of each troubleshooting step you perform.

Regards,

Kevin
