This happens across all apps some more than others.

I am using the Google TV interface.

This was not an issue with the Chromecast 3rd gen when I cast from my iphone.

Hi folks,

I'm sorry for the late response. This has been forwarded to the team and they're looking into this. I'll loop back in once we have an update about this.

Best,

Jennifer

I agree, it's not fixed. I also still have it. I've updated to latest firmware, did a reset of the chromecast, have overlay setting enabled, but still I have to manually change from 50/60fps a lot. I'm not using 24 as my eyes don't like that (I know it's weird). The only app that works well is Netflix which automatically changes framerate when needed.

Not fixed here either.. I use the Chosen app and it still drops frames/stutters.

I stream to my CCGTV with Jellyfin. I used to have the framerate issue and the only fix was to manually change the settings. However, I have tested and noticed with the last 4 movies I've watched that the issue is gone without changing any settings. . Not sure what happened or changed but I just pray it stays solved.

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this will help everyone, but I found a setting in my LG TV that adversely effected the framerate.

In HDMI port options of the TV a setting called HDMI Ultra Deep Color was enabled, disabling this for the port the chromecast was connected instantly made everything played on the chromecast play beautifully again with no stutter or choppyness whatsoever.

Now, if you run a different brand I do not know if they have a similar tech running, but it might be an idea to look at settings that apply to your HDMI port.

For me this fixed all my problems I've been having with the chromecast, I hope it can be usefull to someone else.

Kind regards,

Dirk

After longtime testing, I still have mixed impressions of using my Chromecast 4K. While issues with the smoothness of OTT television were resolved by a May 2024 firmware update, problems persist with the Max streaming service (formerly HBO Max). Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours into streaming, the image becomes very choppy. If I pause playback and then resume, the error immediately repeats. It's necessary to fast rewind the playback or exit to the main menu and start playback again. I can't determine whether this is due to the Chromecast itself or poor optimization by the Max app developer.

Hello,

After months of trying everything. The one thing I didn't try was moving my stream stick off the receiver and directly connecting to a HDMI port on my tv. Removing the middle man that is the receiver. I hope that may help some people and this stupid problem.

You are spamming.

Does anyone know if the new Chromecast with Google TV is based on better hardware, so that this problem doesn't crop up on there.

As much as it really pains me to part with money to replace somethign that really should work, if getting a new bit of kit will get rid of the stuttering it's something I would do.

The higher price point suggests it will be better - but buying again only to find the same problem would be even more of a kick in the gut.

Sadly the Google TV Streamer does NOT fix this long standing issue.  I setup the device and started up an HBO Max stream and immediately started having the stuttering issues occurring.  This is pure insanity for Google to allow this defet/bug to persist for so long

There is a well documented defect/bug on the Google TV streaming platform that dates back to an update that occurred in late 2023 that essentially introduced massive stuttering and playback issues in 24fps content on devices.  The only known workaround/fix was to enable Developer Options and to find the 'Disable HW Overlay' setting and set that to enabled.  This somehow temporarily resolves the stuttering issues and smoothes out the playback of this lower fps content but the problem is that this is only a temporary fix and this setting gets reset every time you perform a restart of the Google TV OS.

Supposedly this was being reviewed by the Google TV software team but I can confirm that this issue is NOT FIXED as of today since I purchased the new Google TV Streamer 4k device and the same stuttering issue is happening still.  Can someone from the development team please comment on this issue and provide a timeline when this will be fixed fully?  This is absolutely insane that a massive stuttering playback issue has been impacting this device for nearly a year with no fix or acknowledgment of a resolution on the horizon.  It completely nullifies the entire purpose of the device if you cannot playback streaming content smoothly

I am running the Google TV OS version:  UTT3.240625.001.K5

Can someone from the development team PLEASE comment on this issue and/or create a defect to track this and get it fully resolved so that we don't have to rely on this 'Disable HW Overlay' temporary fix any longer?

See below for multiple threads on Google support forums and Reddit about this issue:

No!

I hope a fix for streamer on android 14 tv but i read your feedback

Very unhappy

That is hugely disappointing. I have ordered a TV Streamer but they are not shipping in the UK for a month or so. I did so assuming that it would be fixed on a higher spec unit with double the price tag to the old CCWGTV. At least you would hope that if it is still a problem Google are going to pull a finger out to fix it, surely bad reviews around choppy playback will render all the investment in design of the new kit completely pointless.

Great input!

I hope they finally put someone useful on this issue, rather than the pretend-human bot way back that marked the case as closed by supplying a link to a non-existent fix.

With Google wanting to get back into the VR market, they'll have to take framerate consistency a bit more seriously or they'll have customers literally puking.

I still say it's codecs.  Same exact thing happened to my Gen 1 Fire TV box (not Stick) many years ago.  They put out an update and everything stuttered and my personal rips started experiencing audio sync issues where the end of a stream would be.  Off by a couple seconds but would start just fine.  And those files worked perfectly before the update. Only once did I see in a Fire TV forum that someone said that the codecs were updated.  But no one has ever looked into it.  I suspect that content producers are using codecs that are not the same as players.  This content we see stuttering doesn't do so on Windows 11 based services.

Anyone or there able to extract the codecs on Chromecast to examine?

So... went for the Google TV Streamer, as have given up on the CCWGTV ever being fixed correctly. Don't know if that has judders, as it has shipped to the UK market without the ability to install the largest streaming service in the country. This renders it practically useless until this is resolved.

Why do I keep on doing this?

October 2024 and still no fix, will the Android 14 update fix this?? I'm gonna swear off Google products forever if this isn't fixed soon

No worries, in one month it will be the 2nd anniversary. Hopefully, Google knows this and will prepare a surprise for us! Hahaha!
