Chromecast with Google TV disconnects from wifi while streaming

I've been having issues where the Chromecast with Google TV device reports a disconnect from wifi, and less than a minute reports a reconnect.  Some streaming services buffer enough to not have any issues, but some don't.  The latter fail, and require a manual restart of what I was watching.

This issue has been going on for quite a while.  Initially it happened when I had a network of Google/Nest mesh nodes (3 1st gen, 1 2nd gen).  I recently replaced my Google mesh network with a Unifi system from Ubiquity.  The same issue kept happening.  Oddly, the Unifi system did not report the disconnects as happening.

Recently, I noticed a new  "Enhanced IoT connectivity" option on Unifi system.  I enabled that on the wifi network that the Chromecast with Google TV connects to.   https://support.hostifi.com/en/articles/7019454-unifi-recommend-settings-for-iot-devices has a good description of what that option does.

So far, I have seen no issues with disconnects.  Hopefully this information is helpful to others.  Maybe Google will be able to use this post to finally fix this issue.

Oh, and just an FYI, but I have Roku devices and they never had this issue.

Hi @rjrizzuto,

Thanks for posting in the community. I understand that your Chromecast with Google TV has been experiencing Wi-Fi disconnections, which reconnect shortly after, causing streaming services to buffer or fail. Since you've noted that this occurred on both your original Google Nest mesh network and your new UniFi system, I appreciate you sharing that enabling "Enhanced IoT connectivity" on the UniFi system provided a workaround, especially since your Roku devices aren't experiencing this. Your detailed information and troubleshooting efforts are very helpful, and I’d be more than glad to share more details with you.

Your feedback is valuable, as it helps us understand how our devices interact with different network configurations and provides a great reference point for other community members who might be experiencing similar issues.

If you have any additional information to share, please feel free to leave it here.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Sadly, a day later, the issue returned.  I will do more testing.

Hi @rjrizzuto,

Thanks for your response. I’m sorry to hear that the issue returned a few days later. To gather more information about this, I have a few questions:

  • What is your Chromecast firmware version? You can check out this article to learn how to find your device's firmware version.
  • Is there a specific error code on your Chromecast screen besides the "reconnect me" error?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Cheers,
Jonathan

I'm afraid I've decided to abandon google in favor of Roku.  These Chromecast devices should be updating themselves automatically anyway, so checking versions seems pointless.

Given all the reports, it sure seems google  is dropping the ball on this.
