Hi all,
Thanks for posting and apologies for the late reply. I know how it feels when something isn’t working the way it should, this is related to a similar trending issue. Our team is aware of this and is already looking into it. Also, ensure that "Developer Mode" is enabled before submitting feedback. You can send us a feedback by saying "Hey Google send feedback CCT3 Unknown sources for HD unavailable" and "Hey Google send feedback CCT3 Unknown sources for 4K unavailable". Here's how: https://goo.gle/2NvQG6R
@JillG, thanks for the help!
Best,
Nikki

Yup. Me too. Updated last night to 12.
We have this escalated and the team is aware and looking into it.

This issue is definitely not resolved and I have same problem. @JillG, why have you marked it as resolved? rebooting and factory reset does not resolve the issue. At least dont mark it as resolved.
Once any program is installed, the "security and restriction" option changes to "security" and there is no way to enable "Unknown Resources" even if the developer mode is enabled.
And it is on Chromecast TV HD version.
Any update on it?

It isn't resolved for sure and not sure why it is marked as such.
We have an ongoing escalation and the support team is still investigating.
(oh and I posted this earlier but when I updated my older Chromecast to android 12 I also lost the option for installing from unknown sources. Definitely being looked into with the escalation)

sorry but it resolved it for me, but the real fix in my case was not using the automatic setup and doing manual setup instead. For some reason their automatic setup is not recognizing settings correctly and that is why the errors keep piling up. I have done this on multiple devices since then and it works.

Happy to hear it worked for you. I just returned mine and got a fire stick. For me it was the SMART move to a fire TUBE. NEXT time maybe Google will get SMART and youTUBE will NEXT step up their game
11-16-2022 07:22 AM
How do you do a manual setup?
10-25-2022 06:52 PM
Same updated to Andriod 12 same as everyone else only have 2 option and none are for installing unknown
How is this not fixed yet??? Chrome 4k

Same issue is occurring for me. I just bought this device hoping to be all set… am I going to have to return? Or will an update be pushing quickly?
10-26-2022 09:21 AM
It been nice if we had the option to roll back update..just for situations like this....
10-26-2022 03:05 PM
Same issue here, im using a chromecast with google TV. Chromecast got an auto-update to android 12 and then suddenly "unknown source" is not available anymore. I confirm also that developer mode is active and "unknown source" is still not visible.
Would indeed be great if there was an option to downgrade from android 12
11-22-2022 03:06 AM
Just enable dev mode, then try again to install the apk. You will be promoted for unknown sources. I just did the same.

This solution works and is seriously underrated - cheers!
01-21-2023 03:57 AM
Yep, enable developer options and restart worked for me
01-21-2023 08:55 AM
Doesn't work on "Chromecast HD".
Enabled developer options, but when trying to install an apk from an app, the app shows the "enable unknown sources". Then I enable it. Go Back, and it asks me again as if I didn't enable it.

Update on this @JillG ?
10-27-2022 08:31 AM
Only that the support team wants the feedback aka: Hey Google send feedback CCT3 Unknown sources for HD unavailable
Those of us that have the 4k Chromecast lost that ability when we updated as well.
10-27-2022 06:00 PM
Same behavior for me after ugrading CCWGTV4K to Android 12.
Allow installation from unknown sources is not available anymore.

Amy news? Or is just another google **bleep**up? How is this possible? What QA did? Please fire them and hire some of us, we'll do a better job
10-30-2022 03:21 PM
Seriously we need an update to this along with all the other major bugs!
10-30-2022 07:02 PM
Same issue on both my 4k and HD devices. Back to Roku.
11-01-2022 05:07 AM
We seriously need and update for this......
11-01-2022 09:11 AM
I have had this issue for quite a long time, to the point I got rid of my chromecasts and the only way I would ever use one is if the hospital, hotel, Airbnb had one for me to connect to (and therein lies a huge part of the problem with ad-hoc setups).
I have found that now I can actually connect to one "most" of the time by doing the factory reset on the chromecast, and making sure that the tablet, phone or laptop connection is deleted....and finally, this is the most important part...do not use the auto connection feature of the software, do the manual connection and it has worked everytime since then. So reset the Chromecast, delete any previous connections and then do a manual connection (not auto).

Having same issue... Very frustrating!
11-04-2022 07:18 AM
Anyone else feel like were just being ignored....I cant even test my apps on a native device now....so what I should just go buy a new one....BS.....
11-08-2022 12:23 PM
Also experiencing this issue. 4k Chromecast with gtv. Anyone find a resolution?
11-08-2022 03:12 PM
Same problem on 4K Chromecast (GoogleTV) with Android 12. Have sent feedback message as mentioned. I hope it's just a bug and not a feature 😉
11-08-2022 11:07 PM
Just bought a new chromecas and same issue since latest update, Is this the way Google wants to let us know is becoming a new apple?
11-10-2022 10:54 AM
HELLO!!! ANYONE like seriously we need a fix for this...whats is going on!!!!!
11-10-2022 12:13 PM
Hi, I just received my chromecast with google tv hd and I'm bummed out to find out this problem. I should have not bought this device. The only reason I got this is to be able to sideload apps for my already smart tv. if they fix this, what should I do? will the fix just be automatically updated on my device?
11-10-2022 05:27 PM
Having the same issue. Will return my device and go back to Roku... Wtf
11-15-2022 10:35 PM
I also have the same problem. Is this ever going to be fixed??
11-17-2022 12:34 AM
hi Any update? we need a fix
11-17-2022 07:11 AM
I’m able to install apps from unknown sources (approval is on a per app basis) even though the option doesn’t technically exist, so this issue is fixed (in a way )
11-17-2022 12:59 PM
You need to download a file manager program and once you download/send your desired app then open the file manager and then go to install the app at which point you will be asked to install unknown sources. Hope this helps, spent hours trying to figure it out too on android 12.
11-18-2022 07:23 PM
It's say file manager is not allowed
As its say " unknown app cannot be installed by the user"
11-18-2022 07:25 PM
You have to download the file manager from the play store which is not an unknown app.
11-18-2022 07:28 PM
The file amanger is from the store the file I try to install via the file Manger is unknown file it's customized app the new update not true any unknown app to be install via any app
11-18-2022 06:26 PM
I have the same problem on the 4k.
11-18-2022 07:57 PM - edited 11-18-2022 07:58 PM
OK so it's a combination of enable the developer options then it will give you the option to add the file manager as a trusted source see image it's now give you the option settings when you install app via file manager or any file manager app this slime it's give the settings that sens you to a menu where you can add the file manager as a source of trust
11-19-2022 06:42 AM
I was able to confirm this functionality as well. The option for unknown sources is gone from the usual place but the functionality is still there on the ad hoc basis.
