Issues with HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos

I’m having trouble watching movies or TV shows with HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos tracks on Plex. When I try to play these, I only get a black screen. The only workaround I’ve found is to disable HDMI passthrough, but that means I lose Dolby Atmos support.

I was able to play HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos content without issues using the previous Chromecast 4K, so this seems to be a problem specific to the new TV streamer. The streamer is connected to the TV via a soundbar’s eARC port, and I’ve checked both HDMI cables & they’re both ultra high-speed certified. Is there a fix for this?

  • The model according to the settings is just "Google TV Streamer".  I don't know what the link you've sent is meant to show me?
  • I bought the TV streamer about 3 days ago and noticed it as soon as I went to play a file that was HDR10+ with Dolby Atmos
  • The LED is just a solid white light.

Hi  Moonmantle,

Thanks for the follow-up! And thanks for the info. My apologies for the link to the Chromecast and Google TV Streamer specifications. It is fixed now; please take a look. I'd like to suggest the following steps to try; this will help me to isolate the root of the inconvenience:

  • Check the HDMI connection and make sure it’s fully plugged into the TV’s HDMI port.
  • Make sure the TV is tuned to the same HDMI input where the streaming device is plugged in.
  • If possible, try another HDMI port on the TV.
  • If the inconvenience comes from a specific app (e.g. Spotify, Netflix, etc.), check if the app is supported and updated to the latest version.
  • If possible, check if your TV is on its latest firmware version.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,
Juan

  • Have checked HDMI connections and tried multiple ultra high speed cables.
  • I don't know what this means?
  • Have tried every port on the TV
  • The App is updated and works fine for all other types of files, also on other devices (laptop, phone, etc) Have tried the same movie on multiple different Apps and get the same result.
  • TV is also on latest firmware

After some more googling, it seems that there are others with the same or similar issue.
Apparently to do with the processor of the Google TV Streamer.

Hi, got an NVIDIA shield years ago, i said everything works perfectly on kodi/Plex with the shield! Like HDR/ dolby vision profil 5 7 8 and at the same time passtrought AC3 DTS dtshd/hra truehd atmos 5.1 7.1 works perfectly!

With the google streamer i need to put dolby vision compatibility to tonemap everything ( not good) or some files didn't work( black screen or crash apps, and only AC3 e-ac3 and DTS ( simple) are supported, others make no sound until i disable passthrought... I said the settings are the same i just put the HDMI cable from shield to streamer. There is something wrong with the new google streamer!

Ps: the only way i buy the streamer is for the VP9.2 youtube HDR codec ( works perfectly by the way on the streamer) that's not supporter on the shield pro 2019

I'm having similar issue, but it's not specifik to Atmos, I also tested a non Atmos content and got the same problem. Both are 4K. Tried both through TiviMate and VLC, same problem. With the old Chromecast 4K no issues. Strangely, when I untoggle the Automatic Format option and let the system choose format option in the settings, I get picture, but it's like cut in half. Left side of the screen is showed on the right side and vice versa. So weird. Anyway, I have not managed to get a fix, and since Chromcast 4K can play the exact same file on the same TV it must be an issue with the Streamer.

Here's a photo of the problem when i untoggle automatic format and let the system choose:
