Mac Address Issue

clairebradleyy8

I clicked the "Show MAC Address" button and a pop-up came up saying "Unable to get MAC Address from device. Please look on the device itself." Looking at my device, I don't know what one is a MAC address or if there even is one on it. Just looking for help as to how I can locate it. Thanks!

Hey Claire,

A MAC address is a hard-coded machine address of a network capable device. This is normally printed on devices because it can't change. It consists of 6 sets of 2 characters with numbers going from 0-9 and letters going from a-f, the MAC address will look something like this:

00:00:5e:00:53:af

This is different from an IPv4 address that is 4 sets of 3 numbers ranging from 0-256 (for example 192.168.0.1) or an IPv6 address that is 8 sets of 4 characters that range from 0-9 and A-F, (for example

FE80:CD00:0000:0CDE:1257:0000:211E:729C)

Hope this helps.

I have the MAC address now. However, I registered my Chromecast and Phone in my schools device registration to connect it to our wifi but it's not connecting. I've already contacted my school's IT services for assistance but still unsuccessful. When I try and connect to the wifi it says it can't find the network, I'm not sure if this is now an issue with my school's wifi or the Chromecast. Any way you can help?

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

Appreciate your help here, @CR1128.

@clairebradleyy8, the Chromecast devices are intended to work on a regular (non-complex) home WiFi type of network (WLAN). It may not work on an office, campus, dorm, public, etc. type of network. You can try a mobile hotspot or connect a router with a simple WLAN setup. Let us know if you still have questions.

Thanks,

Kimy
