Problem trying to cast from ipad

Lol1234

I was trying to cast a movie from my iPad to my tv yesterday. Nothing was happening- couldn’t get tv to respond. After a while I stopped trying.  I tried again a couple of hours later but still couldn’t get the movie on my tv. A but later I got a call from my neighbour (I live in a group of units). They were having lunch and their tv was turned off. Suddenly their tv turned itself on and on their screen it had my iPad name and a code. They immediately turned their tv off.  A couple of hours later the same thing happened but with a different code!  They again turned off their tv. They are not on the same wifi system and have a different provider. I am now not game to try to do this again in case it goes to my neighbours tv!  Does anyone know how this breach could happen?  It’s quite disturbing that my iPad and Chromecast could access someone else’s tv when not even in the same house!

Hi @Lol1234,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm truly sorry to hear about this disturbing experience with your iPad and Chromecast. It's completely understandable that you'd be concerned and hesitant to use your casting features again after something like that happened, especially with your neighbor's TV turning on unexpectedly. It sounds quite alarming, and I appreciate you reaching out to us for help.

Let's look into some potential reasons why this might occur and what steps you can take to prevent it.

To help prevent this from happening again and secure your casting experience, please try the following:

  1. Verify Your Chromecast Setup:

    • Open the Google Home app on your iPad.

    • Select your Chromecast device.

    • Go to Settings (usually represented by a gear icon).

    • Under "Device information" or similar, confirm that the Wi-Fi network listed is definitively your home network. If it's not, you'll need to reconnect it to the correct network.

  2. Disable Guest Mode on Your Chromecast (If Enabled):

    • In the Google Home app, select your Chromecast.

    • Go to Settings.

    • Look for "Guest mode" and ensure it is disabled. This will prevent anyone not on your Wi-Fi from attempting to cast to your Chromecast.

  3. Rename Your Chromecast:

    • In the Google Home app, select your Chromecast.

    • Go to Settings.

    • Tap on "Name" and give your Chromecast a unique, easily identifiable name (e.g., "Living Room TV - [Your Last Name]"). This can help prevent confusion if multiple Chromecasts are in proximity.

  4. Factory Reset Your Chromecast (If Issues Persist):

    • This is a more drastic step but can resolve persistent connection or configuration issues.

    • You can do this via the Google Home app (Chromecast settings -> More -> Factory reset) or by holding the physical reset button on the Chromecast itself (consult your specific Chromecast model's instructions; please visit our Help Center, How to factory reset your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer, to learn more about it).

    • After a factory reset, you'll need to set up your Chromecast again from scratch, ensuring it connects only to your Wi-Fi network.

  5. Verify Your iPad's Wi-Fi Connection:

    • Before attempting to cast, always double-check that your iPad is connected to your secure home Wi-Fi network. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi on your iPad.

  6. Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network:

    • Ensure your Wi-Fi network has a strong, unique password (WPA2 or WPA3 encryption).

    • If you have a dual-band router, consider using separate SSIDs (network names) for your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and ensure your devices are connecting to the correct one.

By carefully checking these settings, particularly for Guest Mode and your Chromecast's network configuration, you should be able to eliminate the possibility of unintended casting to your neighbor's television. The codes they saw are typical of a Chromecast trying to pair or confirm a cast request, so it seems your iPad indeed tried to connect to a nearby Chromecast-enabled device that happened to be your neighbor's TV.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Kevin
