Update 3/17/25:

Hi folks,

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out has begun and may take a few days to roll out to everyone. We’ll post a confirmation once the roll out to all users is complete.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Are we talking hours, days or weeks for a fix?

Should I be shopping for an alternative?

Same problem as in this one: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Streaming/We-couldn-t-authenticate/m-p/437872
but since the comments are disabled and the issue hasn't been resolved (the current accepted answer does not cover my, and I'm sure many others` situation) I felt I needed to create a new topic.

Suddenly I could not stream to my chromecast from any up or from any device directly. Did a factory reset and now I can't set-up my Chromecast. Each time I try I get the error message "We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast".

The accepted solutions talk about updating the firmware through the UI, or with a help of a remote. I cannot upgrade through UI since I cannot complete the set-up and my Chromecast came without a remote 2nd gen model NC2-6A5. How do I push the new firmware to it?

same here

So far, nothing. I've already tried everything (from resetting to factory settings, uninstalling Google Home, trying to connect directly...) we have to wait for Google to come up with a solution.
I think this forum is where you'll be kept up to date if something moves....

Just had the same issue. Couldn't cast to anything so did a factory reset. Got to the stage of connecting my device and said couldn't authenticate. Thought it was just my device till I've seen chromecast has been down since 6pm last night. Ridiculous it's still ongoing

I have the same problem. I have 3 Chromecast Audio devices and Google Home cannot connect to any of them. They all worked fine on Saturday night (March 8, 2025) but will not connect beginning March 9, 2025. They are all on the same WIFI network . I confirmed that each device is connected to my WIFI through my WIFI administration page. I tried to factory reset one of them but now Google Home responds "couldn't authenticate".

How can this be resolved/fixed?

2 days and I'm pretty much all run out of patience! Google at the very least could give updates every 12 hours or so. I want to know what my next move is. Bad business.

Same here 😔

The issue is your CC SSL authentication certificate that has an intermediary CA cert that expired... you can add it back by setting your phone date/time to March 7th 2025 ... you won't be able to do anything else after that though.

Cosa fare?

Same here "We could not authenticate your Chromecast Audio". Tried rebooting everything, internet, wifi, Chromecast, Pixel, any feedback from Google?

And me! This obviously is a current issue with a flock of people having this problem today.

Same here 😢

this sounds like one of the dirtiest workarounds ever heard🤣

There's even more dirty nasty sh*t you can do to get casting to work if you have an android phone and/or are using chrome browser.

Help! Having the same problem and I can't figure out how to fix it. I've factory reset my chromecast and I get that message. When I try again, it goes through to connect but then it says it can't communicate with my chromecast. Was working fine up until yesterday!

You're right. I changed the date and was able to get it set up I guess but the device isn't showing up on my Google Home and I still can't cast anything to my TV. This is frustrating.

Oki so inte not worth trying that then. Or have u been able to cast anyting since u wrote this. Cuz then I'm changing date as well

Confirmed. I took an old andoird changed the date and I was able to configure chromecast

so now I am where I was last night😡

At least it should autoupdate (if is there any update to be made🙄)

Shouldn't the solution then be renewing the certificate? Surely that would be a better solution than changing the date?

Mesmo problema aqui.

I have the same issue. Although I get the message in danish, and it says it cant connect - but I have tried everything. Maybe it doesn't differentiate between the two messages in danish, so I’ll tag along here.

09 marzo 2025.

error message "We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast".

same

Stessa cosa anche per me.

Had the same problem since last night until now 😮💨
