Update 3/17/25:

Hi folks,

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out has begun and may take a few days to roll out to everyone. We’ll post a confirmation once the roll out to all users is complete.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

got the 2nd gen , same problem

Same problem, did they roll something out to weed out the chromecast 2nd gen users? Feels like a 'you gotta buy newer products' set-up to me... Still hoping for a solution tho!

I have the third gen, same issue.

I’ve been trying to set up my Chromecast since yesterday. I’ve performed a factory reset several times, updated my phone, updated my apps, made sure my local network access is on. I’ve reset my Wi-Fi router and the light on my Chromecast is white. Everything seems to be working fine until I get to the end of set up and receive this message: TV may be set up, but we could not communicate with it from your iPhone. Make sure that you have enabled local network access in your privacy settings and try again. Ice even tried setting it up on a different TV.

Ho lo stesso problema da ieri hanno smesso di funzionare tutti e 4 i miei chromecast su 4 tv diverse. Home non li vede più

I have exactly the same problem. Also with a 2nd Generation Chromecast. It worked just fine until last week. Please help!

Exactly the same problem here. Worked fine until last night. It can’t be a coincidence that we’re having the same problem. Just need a fix from Google!

Same problem here!

It seems like the same problem is happening all over the world right now. It's probably a bug from the developers. There were a lot of comments on YouTube last night that were having the same problem.

Same problem here… Google needs to fix ASAP

Same thing here.. worked fine yesterday and now I keep getting errors and can not connect

Same problem here since last night, I tried to book several calls with Google, but the bot just hung up... I guess it must be a wider problem, hopefully Google will provide some information soon!

Wow, I thought that my 2nd generation Chromecast must be malfunctioning, but it looks like it's on Google side...

Two of my four Chromecasts are not working and, of course, I did a factory reset which evidently I shouldn't have done. I understand that Google can be glitchy, but this is really bad.

PUDE VOLVER A CONECTAR EL CHROMECAST CAMBIANDO FECHA EN DISPOSITIVO ANDROID Y CONECTANDO A LA MISMA RED WIFI. LUEGO SIN ACTUALIZAR LA FECHA EL DISPOSITIVO NO APERECE EN LAS APLICACIONES COMO FORMA DE TRANSMITIR.

SE VE EL MODO AMBIENTE. EN AMBOS CASOS.

CUANDO ACTUALIZO LA FECHA EN EL DISPOSITIVO ANDROID, Y QUIERO CONECTARME A YOUTUBE POR EJEMPLO CON LA APLICACION DE MI DISPOSITIVO ANDROID ME SALE LA LEYENDA "NO SE PUEDE VERIFICAR. ESTO PUEDE DEBERSE A QUE EL FIRMWARE DEL DISPOSITIVO ESTA DESACTUALLIZADO"

- POR FAVOR GOOGLE ESTO ES RESPONSABILIDAD DEL CREADOR ES DECIR USTEDES DEBEN SOLUCIONARLO O REENVIARNOS DISPOSITIVOS QUE FUNCIONEN. YO CUIDO MUCHO MIS COSAS Y NO ESTA ROTO USTEDES DEBEN ACTUALIZAR EL FIRMWARE DE LA APLICACION HOME PARA QUE CONECTE CORRECTAMENTE Y PODAMOS UTILIZAR UN PRODUCTO QUE COMPRAMOS. SOMOS CLIENTE GOOGLE. HELP ME!

What are our options if we did a factory reset? That would be one of the first things to try when experiencing difficulty, something most people did, I'd imagine.....

Chromecast stopped working, couldn’t cast. Was working fine until now. Did multiple factory resets, Hone app sees device and  seems to progress and then at final step of connecting it always says “something went wrong”. No changes to router settings. Can see chromecast in connected devices on my router.
connected phone to chromecast SSID, but then Home can’t even see the chromecast anymore. Lost as to what to try next.

Desde ayer los 3 que tengo no van. Y Google no responde!!!!!

Happened to me as well! Tried everything, but nothing works…

I'm getting the same thing here. I'm getting an error after a factory reset: "We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast..." Went to Play Store and told that on Google Home App reviews, then I was told to leave a feedback for the support, but the way they told me to leave a feedback doesn't work, once I have to do it accessing the device (Chromecast) and I don't have it anymore, I don't have any device on my Google Home. Always did a factory reset to fix things, and it used to work just fine. That's the first time something like that happens. I can even predict what's wrong here: every time a factory reset was done, Google Chrome allowed me to set up the Chromecast and then got updates from Google for the firmware, but now there are no updates because it doesn't even complete the setup.

Device has stopped working. Cannot connect from any phone. Connection error or authentication error occurs. Hard Reset device performed multiple times. What is the problem? We have a second chromecast that works without a problem.

If you did a factory reset, adjusting your phone's date & time manually would let you successfully connect to the chrome cast gen 2 again by temporarily turning off the following in order: "Automatic date and time" > "Set time zone based on location" > "Automatic time zone", from your Android device. Set the time to March 3, 2025 then, do a fresh start of Google Home App by closing the app and then open it again and try to add and setup the device. I successfully reconnected my device back into my home wifi network and back to "Untrusted Device" due to firmware issue again when trying to stream or cast videos. Now it is a waiting game for the GoogleNestTeam to fix the firmware/expired certificate issue. All the best GoogleNestTeam and goodluck!
