Hey folks, 

If you previously performed a factory reset, we’re happy to report that the Google Home app update will reach all users today.

Please make sure you’re on version 3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio. Check out this help center article if you need help updating the Google Home app.

If you’re still experiencing problems during setup, please reach out to customer support for further assistance.

Hi folks,

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out has begun and may take a few days to roll out to everyone. We’ll post a confirmation once the roll out to all users is complete.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Hi everyone,

Thank you again for your patience, we have some good news - the fix should reach all users today. If your device has received the update it should be on the following firmware versions:

Chromecast (2nd gen): Firmware version 1.56.467165

Chromecast Audio: Firmware version 1.56.467166

Check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

Please note: If you performed a factory reset during the troubleshooting process, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup the device. The team is working diligently to resolve this, and we will provide next steps as soon as possible.

We have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days. Your device must be connected to receive the update.

If you performed a factory reset during initial troubleshooting, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup your device. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible. Please continue to check the Community page here for updates and next steps.

An update on the situation: the team has identified the cause of the issue impacting Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices.

Please do not factory reset your device. If you previously performed a factory reset during troubleshooting, you may also be experiencing an issue where you're unable to re-setup your device. The team has identified the cause for this as well and is currently working on a fix.

We’re working to resolve this as soon as possible, and will keep you updated when there is more to share.

All very well to say don’t factory reset it… well anyone who gets to the point many users have got to would’ve factory reset it. I wasted an hour on the help chat being told to adjust settings, set it up via a mobile hotspot in case it was a wifi issue (clearly it is not if there’s a worldwide outage) and then finally transferred to a senior help assistant who said they can’t help me. Argh!

The Chromecast cannot connect to the Wi-Fi

Good afternoon. I'd like someone to tell me if there's a solution for faulty Chromecast devices that have been reset to factory settings.

I don't want to waste any more time, and the truth is, this problem has me very angry with the brand.

I bought a Google Nest and I still can't turn on an LG TV (Nest blames LG's software). It doesn't solve anything for me either, except for stupid things (the time, the weather, etc.).
I can use it as an amplifier for the sound playing on my phone. Anyway, one more disappointment.

The truth is, I'm really skeptical of Google products these days.

I hope I can find a decent answer here. Thank you very much for your input.

It’s a worldwide problem unfortunately, that started on Sunday.  The authentication certificate was valid for ten years, which ran out on Sunday, and we’ve been waiting for Google to find the solution ever since.  So frustrating!

Solution provided by @pmk421 for those of us who reset our devices to factory settings.
1. Change the date to March 6, 2025 (not automatically), which is earlier than the expiration date of the digital security certificate.
2. Use Google Home to manage your second-generation Chromecast until it connects to your home network. It's as if you just bought it and want to program it for use at home.
3. Wait with the device connected to your home or office Wi-Fi network until Google provides the definitive solution, which will be updating the device.

Fix for factory reset Chromecast using iPad for Google Home setup.

On iPad, go to settings > general > date and time

Un-check “set automatically”

Set date to early March 2025 (I used March 2nd)

Go to google Home app and add Chromecast device. Use menus to complete setup as normal. My Chromecast successfully completed setup after the date change.

Go back to Date and Time and re-check “set automatically.”

I've got mine working with a fix procedure provided in youtube  "https://www.youtube.com/@multimediatipsytrucos532".

Since it is not safe enough, I think every must wait for the official fix release from google. but my comment is to tell everybody that it is fixable and not a complete brick.

Ya llevo más de una semana con el problema y al parecer por parte de Google no habrá solución. Mi Chromecast 2gen llevaba años sin problemas funcionando, incluso cuando lo llevaba de viaje considerando que no todo lugar tiene un smartTV compatible.

si Google no puede solucionar el problema, que realice un reembolso de los productos ya que no es falla del equipo, o acaso se están volviendo como la compañía de la manzana que tiene obsolescencias programadas??

El parche de actualización que corrige el problema lo han empezado a transmitir hoy, es automático y no hay que hacer nada si no habéis reseteado el chromcast a fabrica, pero puede tomar unos días en llegar a todos los dispositivos del mundo, es cuestión de paciencia, solo hay que esperar a que se arregle por si solo y ver cada día si ya puedes conectar desde youtube por ejemplo. Si lo habías reseteado a fabrica y en la tele te salen las instrucciones para vincularlo al móvil, pon tu teléfono a fecha del dia 7 de marzo y sigue los pasos de configuración desde google Home, una vez configurado, te quedara esperar a que reciba la actualización automática.

Podés solucionar de la siguiente manera

Cambia la fecha en tu telef pon fecha del sábado 8 luego ve a la app de Home y comienza a cargar el crome hasta que te aparezca los fondos y déjalo ahí luego vuelve y pon la fecha actual de tu celu

Please fix it! We have 30 classes on the village with kids using projector to watch the video-leassons at their classroom where there is no teachers. This tool is very helpful to stream the videos on this old projector for more than 40 students by class. Now they are watching on the small TV.  💔

TOO LATE TO BE OF HELP AFTER YOUR SITE HAS TOLD MILLIONS OF TO FACTORY RESET YOU PUT A POST UP TO NOT DO THAT. WHY DIDNT YOU DO THIS BEFORE RUINING THE ENTERTAINMENT OF YOUR CUSTOMERS, THE BUG DIDNT COME FROM US !!!!! I  ALONG WITH LOTS OF OTHERS AM LOOKING FOR AN ALTERNATIVE TO A SITE THAT BLAMES US FOR FOLLOWING THEIR GUIDE.

I had issues with chromecast audio yesterday, is the problem still there ? because now its running fine, If not I fixed it by forcing the 5 hz band only and suppress the 4  band and alls fine. 

Did you do something special ?

Did you receive notification ?

I am not able to setup a new chromecast device and I have an existing one that I did a factory reset and cannot setup this device.   Local network is enabled.   I have 2 others that are working.   What is the fix for those reset or new to factory?

Wow ... a certificate issue ... again ! 
Chromecast should takes updates from Google Home and automatically update its certificate. You cannot have an IOT live on its own with an expiring certificate, there should be a process to remotely update it or via google home at least !
