For all the factory reset people who are freaking out and asking "what do I do now?":
1) Temporarily set the date on your smartphone (or tablet) to March 8 or earlier.
2) Use the Google Home app to re-setup your Chromecast. You still won't be able to cast, and the device will be grayed out in the Home app, but that's ok. Also, you can change your phone's date/time setting back to Auto now.
3) Sit back and wait for the firmware update from Google to be installed.
Supposedly it's going to be a phased rollout, so it could take as long as several days for the firmware update to hit your device. Patience.
**Google really should pin this information to the top of this page.**

For all the people who performed a factory reset during their initial troubleshooting, this procedure will allow you to reconnect your Chromecast to your Wi-Fi network, so that it can receive the firmware update fix that Google started rolling out on 3/13.
1) Temporarily set the date on your smartphone (or tablet) to March 7, 2025 or earlier. If you don't know how to do that, see below.*
2) Use the Google Home app to re-setup your Chromecast by adding it as a new device (+). You still won't be able to cast, and the device will be grayed out in the Home app, but that's ok. Most importantly, it'll now be reconnected to your Wi-Fi network so that it can receive the firmware update fix.
3) Change your phone's date/time setting back to Auto now.
4) Sit back and wait for the firmware update from Google to be installed. This should restore your Chromecast to full functionality.
Note: Supposedly it's being done as a "phased rollout", so it could take a while for the firmware update to hit your Chromecast. Also, some have reported that power-cycling your Chromecast (unplug/re-plug the power cable) will sort of "provoke" the firmware update to be installed. Patience.
*How to change your phone's date/time settings:
For iPhone/iPad: go to Settings, General, Date & Time. Disable "Auto" and manually set the date to March 7, 2025 or earlier.
For most Android phones/tablets: Settings, General Management, Date and Time. Disable "Auto" and manually set the date to March 7, 2025 or earlier.
**Google REALLY should pin this information to the top of this page.**

Thank you it worked! Hope to see the update soon enough from Google 😅
03-13-2025 04:47 PM
Absolutely (that this info should be pinned!). So many will have factory reset to try and fix.......

Right? Literally half the people here are asking "what do I do now"? after doing a factory reset.
03-16-2025 01:12 AM
Literally half of people here have issues with instant gratification and not willing to read comments where the solution has been found by the community.
03-13-2025 05:39 PM
Thank you, I've done it.
Let's hope they hurry up!
03-16-2025 06:26 AM
Once your device is reconnected it should start working again quite quickly
03-13-2025 05:53 PM
Tried this and my Google home can't find any devices now
03-13-2025 06:17 PM
Not sure why it didn't work for you. Maybe try power cycling your chromecast, or even doing another factory reset, and then following my instructions once more. Let me know.
03-14-2025 06:16 AM
Pero ¿en qué quedamos? Google dice QUE NO RESTABLEZCAMOS JAMÁS LA CONFIGURACIÓN DE FÁBRICA.
Grazie
03-13-2025 05:59 PM
I'm sitting back & waiting now.
The YouTube app is reporting "untrusted device" / "outdated firmware" error message. Most other Chromecast enabled apps just silently fail.
At least I'm in the queue for the update now.
