That's not how certificates work unfortunately. They are a security measure that should be renewed periodically. Where they dropped the ball was not renewing it before it expired.
03-13-2025 09:41 AM
Certificares needs to expire

Certificates needs to expire.

why🤷...
03-13-2025 11:56 AM
These things happen.
03-13-2025 01:41 PM
What they want is us to buy the New device. The Google Streamer which is a lot more expensive. They kniwingly ruined Chromecast .
03-13-2025 01:43 PM
that completely flies in the face of planned obsolesence.
sure this certificate issue was a slip, but do not think that this is not baked in... they already have selected the end date for the 2nd gen.

How many customers were affected? Thousands? Prove it! It would be a shame if someone were involved in foul play. Get their rocks off that way before they go back to a miserable life again.
03-14-2025 07:11 PM
What are you talking about? It's not a murder mystery. Google messed up. And yesterday 100s of thousands will have been affected.
03-14-2025 03:57 AM
No! Certificates should have a reasonable expiration date. What needs to be done is a check for expiration and updates.
03-14-2025 06:44 PM
Like they care. If it hadn't made the news they wouldn't have done anything.
03-16-2025 01:25 AM
For real. I already reset mine so I hope they come up with a fix soon
03-16-2025 05:44 AM
Try to update your device date to 1st March 2025 and then connect chromecast to get updated.it will be working after taking time to update.
03-16-2025 06:13 PM
03-17-2025 03:16 AM
It has been over a week now.
03-17-2025 08:45 AM
Global outgage.
Probably millions were affected.
03-18-2025 09:17 AM
Saya hanya ingin di perbaiki saja
03-18-2025 07:45 PM
Mine is still not working...in NC. They just installed Google Fiber in our neighborhood and then my 2 Chromecasts went out.
03-11-2025 12:57 AM
Claro una certificación que Google "olvido" renovar..
03-11-2025 01:31 AM
Hello my friend. I think is not so easy. Google stopped selling Chromecast devices and they decided to stopped to support it.
03-11-2025 06:06 AM
stop support is one thing, enter in my home and destroy silently, without adivise me in advance is another.
03-12-2025 08:23 AM
No se lo cree nadie verdad
03-13-2025 01:45 PM
03-11-2025 03:26 AM
Must be easy to fix ...
03-11-2025 06:18 AM
One would think so, but the issue is now at least 24 hours old and there's no sign of a fix from Google. I went to Argos today and bought the Amazon Firestick HD.
03-11-2025 12:18 PM
LOL
03-11-2025 01:36 PM
Please let me know if you know a way to cast to it from a Google phone
03-11-2025 03:44 AM
If the cert becomes past due and a new product is on the horizon?
03-11-2025 10:28 AM
03-12-2025 12:44 AM
There are a lot of chinese clones on Amazon and AliBaba - I'll buy one of those instead.
03-12-2025 08:50 AM
I renew certificates everyday, would they like me to take over?
03-12-2025 09:29 AM
It really doesn’t matter what the specific cause was, just that the outage is due to a problem at Google and there is nothing a user can do but complain.
an expired certificate would indeed be an unforgivable mistake by a company such as Google, if indeed that’s the root cause. Imagine if Google mail went down for all customers because of an expired certificate? This would make the nightly news and Google executives would be brought before Congress to account—and that from a service that most Americans use for free.
i truly don’t believe a a certificate was really to blame. It’d be fixed by now if that were the only reason. A company like Google doesn’t let certificates expire unless they want to.
but again, the cause is internal to Google. While interesting to those of us in the tech world, the users are not meant to care why. Users just want things to work. In the grand scheme of things why is way down the list to most users since users cannot fix the issue on their own.
03-12-2025 09:37 AM
In this day and age, a root certificate should never need to be maintained by humans. This should 100% be automated! I am floored that Google was affected by this.
03-12-2025 03:41 PM
10 year certs are reasonable. There just needs to be a way to move over to a newer cert. Almost no end user can, nor should have to, mess around with this. Power off and power on should be the process, but it's not yet available.
03-12-2025 05:09 PM
Expired cert. That should only take a few mins to fix. Takes us about 30 minutes to update expired certificates where I work.
03-12-2025 05:37 PM
There’s like 100M Chromecast certificates to resign … not sure how google will fix this . Use a unique common certificate ? Generate a new self-signed certificate on the fly ? Generate a unique firmware for each Chromecast so they can have a unique certificate ?
03-13-2025 04:12 AM
Something that even smallest companies doesn't forget... what a mess Google... just after Pixel 4a, time to think to an alternative.
