Hi folks,

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out has begun and may take a few days to roll out to everyone. We’ll post a confirmation once the roll out to all users is complete.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Everything is working again!

Thank you.

Please ensure these devices continue to operate and consider reinstating the Chromecast line if devices, they are a valuable device.

Hi all. Firstly, thankyou development team at Google for looking into this. It is greatly appreciated!!

Seeing a partial fix here. E.G. even though I have factory reset my Chromecast Audio, I can reauthenticate it if I use WIFI and obviously to do that, I must be on the same 2.4G network. However, previously my Chromecast Audio Would work after factory reset when using it on ethernet with an ethernet adapter. That said, once the device is reauthenticated on WIFI you can plug it into a USB to ethernet adapter and it will again work on ethernet.

Current known issues:

Even when the device is reauthenticated and back on the network, you cannot change any of the audio settings on it such as choosing the “Full Dynamic Range” checkbox or turn the volume up. That is because Google Home says “these settings are currently unavailable”. This happens if you are using wireless or an ethernet adapter where as previously this did not matter and all settings were available if you are connected to the same network. You can for now workaround the volume issue by asking the Google assistant to set the volume to ten for the device in question.

Also, you cannot create or add the device to any current speaker groups that you may have and currently I am not able to create any speaker groups in the Google Home app.

Finally, a long standing issue is that if you are using Chromecast audio devices in a speaker group and you ask Google to stream something that is only available on YouTube, and you as and end user don't know that when making the request, it will fail. What should happen is the audio should be streamed to the speaker group in question because it is audio. I suspect that the reason this fails is because Google assumes that users may wish to watch the visual content of the video. However, as lots of music, podcasts etc are available on YouTube, the audio should be streamed anyway.

Update. Checked my Google Pixel 7 Pro for app updates on the Play Store. Then, rebooted phone and I can now change audio settings and add speaker groups in the Google Home app.

Interesting. 2 of the 3 Chromecast Audio devices that I have here updated when connected to WIFI. The third one refused to connect and displayed the following error message:

We couldn’t Authenticate your Chromecast. If this happens then set the date on the device that you are using with Google Home before March 9th 2025. Then you will be able to get your Chromecast going again. Note: have since reset one of my Chromecast Audio devices and at this stage it is no longer possible to set-up one of these on ethernet after a factory reset. Hopefully Google may address this particular issue in the future.

Kind regards, Phil Muir

We already found the problem 1 from 3 Chromecast

not working, the 1 due to We already factory reset it

and 2 Chromecast already fixed after update .

please help asap

Hi Nest Team, what’s the latest? I performed a factory reset and cannot connect… Hope we can resolve this asap! I can’t live without my Chromecast

It’s back online! Thank you GoogleNestTeam

Thanks for the resolution, my three devices are back online (I hadn't done a reset).  Kudos.

My chromecast problem is solved..I hope it will be same for rest of the users..thanks google team👍❤️

I had my chromecast gen 2 factory reset: today I set my phone calendar to 03/03 and did the pairing through the google home app. Chromecast updated by itself and is running again

Will you send an email to inform us that everything is OK or do we have to look by ourselves for the info every day ?

I did the factory reset what I will do now ? 🥲🥲

Both my chrome cast audios are "offline" I haven't reset them other than a powering them off and on again. How will they receive the update if they are offline?

I find it ironic that in the age of mass information and social media Google did not warn people in a more effective manner. All of us who reset our devices did what we were instructed to do in trouble shooting. We just reset the device and now this. Looks like it's time for Roku or Fire stick!

Do you know about how long it will be

Hello. Is there any news about those who have made the factory reset?

Still not working

I updated google chrome, and changed mobile date (08/03/2025) google crhome has updated and now it's ok!!!

And those who have done the factory reset, how will we know what to do?

Wow!! Finally my Chromecast is updated and working like before.

I have done a factory rest couldn,t connect. Please fix ASAP.

If you had acted faster in informing people then people might not have factory reset there devices  like me,mines been down now since last Sunday without a fix only got informed by yourselves Thursday by email which is pathetic!! I hope your going to replace the ones that have been factory reset if you can't find a fix???
