Update 3/17/25:

Hi folks,

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out has begun and may take a few days to roll out to everyone. We’ll post a confirmation once the roll out to all users is complete.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

(possible) NewsFlash:

A few users have reported here that Google has supposedly released a new version of the Home app (currently for iPhone only?) that addresses the "factory reset" catch-22 hellscape that so many are experiencing. I can see that there is a new version on the Apple App Store from today 3/16, but I'm an Android guy so I can't confirm that it actually fixes this issue (and the changelog isn't specific about which bugs it addresses). If true, this will be a much simpler solution than the well-known "date" workaround, especially for non-technical users. The solution would be as simple as updating to the latest version of the Home app and then using it to re-setup your Chromecast.

I'd like to hear from other iPhone users here if this is indeed the fix that so many people have been waiting for. Please report results here.

Of course, if all of this is true, I assume they'll also be releasing an Android version soon.

I did factory reset my ChromecastAudio device (iOS). I downloaded the latest Home update and was able to connect to my Wi-Fi.

I'm sure this is all made up to make ppl buy new devices. This is taking sooooo long.. it doesn't makes sense that a company like Google doesn't have resources to solve this right alway.

Smells fishy af...

If you can stop being cynical long enough to do this, it will fix your Chromecast:   🙂

Someone on this thread posted these instructions. I tried them and the first time it didn’t work. It updated but didn’t connect. I forgot to change the date back to automatic. Once I did that it’s working great. Amazing the “pros” at google can’t find the solution! Thanks to the person that shared the solution!!!!

Eu acabei redefinindo de fábrica e não conseguia nem conectar na rede pra atualizar. Troquei a data do meu celular para o dia 06 de março e depois disso consegui reconhecer e atualizar o Chromecast.

Deu certo!

For some reason my phone (iphone 16 pro) wouldn’t connect the chrome cast to the TV so I tried the IPad, and it worked. So if you are having the same issue try that- Bit stupid!

It’s almost a week ago since I was able to watch tv. I think it’s disappointing and disrespectful with us all that time with a proper solution. And of course I restored my device because the support of the company recommended before the send an update of the shutdown. Very disappointed!
