For those who have factory reset: Change the date of the phone/device you are casting from to March 6th and you will be able to connect to Chrome cast. After connecting you will receive the update and it will work.

Marked as answered without an answer for all of us who, doing their best to resolve the issue thinking something had change on their end, reset the devices to factory (as recommended by Google on the troubleshooting threads for Chromecasts not being able to connect).

What shall we do to unbrick chromecasts reset to factory? What's the ETA for this to have a solution?
Thanks.

Any update?

More than one week is already spent and Chromecast still doesn't work!

Thanks, I re-enabled my Gen2 ChromeCast after a few weeks dormant, and it crashed my entire network last week. Needless to say I've unplugged it.

Networks don't usually "crash" and don't fail that easily, especially due to communication errors from ChromeCasts, unless they contain malicious content. 🤷

Maybe try again by changing your phone's date to the 7th of March and set ChromeCast up again. Then it should receive the fix via the internet.

Mine's working again and I had done a factory reset on it. I changed the date on my phone back to 7th March as suggested.

Finally solved. Those were the steps:

1 - turn off automatic date and time on ipad

2 - change date to March 1st

3 - reset chromecast

4 - setup on google home

5 - turn on automatic date and time on ipad

Thanks for all your tips

Hola

Google needs your chromecast device to be connected to wi-fi in order to get the fix. If you did a factory reset on your gen2 chromecast it's offline.  I did a factory reset on one of my 2 chromecast devices.  The one that stayed online received the fix and is working.  In order to get the one I factory reset back on wifi, I changed the date on my cell phone manually to previous 9 March 2025.  That allowed me to connect and set up the factory reset device to my wi-fi.  After a few hours the device received the fix update and is now working.  Hope this helps those who are still offline waiting for instructions from google.

Email received from Google:

Update regarding your Chromecast device

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out is beginning today and may take up to a few days to roll out to everyone. Updates will be posted in the Google Nest Community.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Works great. Thanks for the posting.

WHOA! With your advice (by changing the mobile phone date backwards) I managed to get in contact with my Chromecast and do the setup at least to the update point... then it got stuck with the actual update... BUT still the connection from mobile phone to the TV (with Chromecast attached) worked!!!
So, while the Chromecast update might still be "ongoing" the darn thing works just fine!!!

1000x thanks to you "tkizzle", whereever you are. I am in Estonia

To get your Chromecast generation 2 to update you need to put the dates back to before the problem started on your mobile phone then connect your Chrome to the internet it will then receive the updates restart it and it should work

<span;>Saluti
