Just got off the phone with tech.. This is **Only for those of us that factory reset, maybe even deleted device with intention of re-adding, and then kept getting "can't authenticate device" message**: Open app store, update Google Home, open app, go to add device (or just connect device), during normal process it will auto-prompt updates to be done at same time (takes a hot minute for it all to download), should be golden after that.

Doesn't resolve the issue for reset devices. Says I need to activate the chrome cast using device utility (a defunct app)...

It is two days since your last update promising Google Home app version 3.30.1.6 for Android, yet as of today 3/19/25 the Google Home App is still on version 3.30.1.5 on the Play Store. The Google Home app version 3.30.1.6 has not pushed to any of my Android devices. How many days are there in a "few days"?

For those who have factory reset their device and updated google home to the latest version and things still don't work out, i have a fix.
You need two mobile phones for this, one with hotspot capabilities and the other with google home app.
1. Power down your home wifi
2. Set up a hotspot with exactly the same specifications as your home wifi.
3. Set the dates of both phones back to march 5th
4. Connect the other phone to your hotspot
5 open google home and connect to your chromecast
6 when prompted for wifi connection of chromecast, provide hotspot credentials
7 chromecast starts downloading the beloved google firmware updates!
8 go through the steps prompted by home app. If things don't go, just skip them untill google home says you're done.
9 disconnect power of chromecast, reset the dates on your mobile phone, turn off hotspot, turn on home wifi again.
9 wait untill you can connect your phones to the home wifi
10 reconnect power to chromecast and cast whatever you want!

Finally it works, have upgraded Home app to the latest version, was able to connect to 2nd gen Chromecast, obviously it did a firmware upgrade and I got it working again! It took a while, but it is fixed! Thx

I was so excited. The update finally came through an hour ago. Did it? And now it's not working still, it's saying on one Chromecast, to hard reset it, because it belongs to someone else I did that. And now it won't connect at all the other one goes through all the steps and then fails to connect. Saying it couldn't connect. Couldn't connect to Chromecast. Failed. Fix this now! I'm so sick of this issue! What's through point of an update if it still doesn't work???????????????

After downloading/installing the android update, I'm still having difficulty. The Home app and device connect, but when I get to the point of communicating with my wifi I receive the following message: "Could not communicate with your Chromecast". Please advise...

Got my three Chromecast Audio devices back up and working properly. Took a bit of doing, but had excellent help from Google support rep (thanks Jose!) and everything is working again. If you're having trouble reconnecting you'll likely have to remove the device from Google home and add it back. Might have to mess with other settings too so if your not sure I suggest getting a call from Google support and let them walk you through it. My experience with their support was excellent.

hard to update

i understand how frustrating it can be to deal with connectivity issues on Chromecast 2nd Gen and Chromecast Audio. Have you tried resetting the device and ensuring your Wi-Fi settings are optimized?

I will never buy a Google product again. I'm so pissed off that. Even after I got the update and did everything correctly. I still can't use either of my 2 Google chromecasts. I tried hard resetting factory hard resetting. Just like it asked me, chuxes said, I don't own this even though it's mine. And neither of them work, even with the update on my phone for Google Home. My Google Chromecast, will no longer connect to my internet. Due to your issue

1) Long press the Home app icon.
2) Press "App info."
3) Press "Storage."
4) Press "Clear cache."

I was one of who made the factory reset. I solved the problem by changing the phone date where I have the Google Home app to March 8th (the day previous to the problem). With that, my Chromecast 2nd was detected by the Google Home app, and I could move forward with the configuration process without problem. Once my Chromecast 2nd was connected to my wifi, it started the updating process and "voilà", my Chromecast 2nd started to work normally again! Kind regards!
