If you previously performed a factory reset, we’re happy to report that the Google Home app update will reach all users today.

Please make sure you’re on version 3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio. Check out this help center article if you need help updating the Google Home app.

If you’re still experiencing problems during setup, please reach out to customer support for further assistance.

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out has begun and may take a few days to roll out to everyone. We’ll post a confirmation once the roll out to all users is complete.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Hi everyone,

Thank you again for your patience, we have some good news - the fix should reach all users today. If your device has received the update it should be on the following firmware versions:

Chromecast (2nd gen): Firmware version 1.56.467165

Chromecast Audio: Firmware version 1.56.467166

Check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

Please note: If you performed a factory reset during the troubleshooting process, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup the device. The team is working diligently to resolve this, and we will provide next steps as soon as possible.

We have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days. Your device must be connected to receive the update.

If you performed a factory reset during initial troubleshooting, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup your device. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible. Please continue to check the Community page here for updates and next steps.

An update on the situation: the team has identified the cause of the issue impacting Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices.

Please do not factory reset your device. If you previously performed a factory reset during troubleshooting, you may also be experiencing an issue where you're unable to re-setup your device. The team has identified the cause for this as well and is currently working on a fix.

We’re working to resolve this as soon as possible, and will keep you updated when there is more to share.

It still doesn't work. Google Home sees the Chromecast but it doesn't authenticate it

I don't own a Chromecast (2nd generation )Nor do I own a Chromecast audio. My Google accounts are HACKED !!!! 

I had performed the factory reset on my device when the initial problem occurred. I have the updated google home version above (3.30.1.6 for android), but I am still unable to connect. I get all the way to the last stage, and it says there is a problem connecting to my chromecast. please advise what to do next.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I factory reset my Chromecast just before the announcement and thought I would never be able to use it again, even though it powers up. I begrudge getting rid of something that technically still works, so I'm very happy that you've helped all affected by this, instead of making us buy new stuff and adding to landfill. again, this 'fix' has not improved my situation - it still says my chromecast cannot connect. what now?

I was able to set up my Chromecast Audio after a factory reset. It took several tries but I have it set up and I can cast music to it. However, the device does not show up in the Google Home app. What can I do to fix this? I already tried setting it up from scratch but the issue didn't go away.

in summary i have an ONKYO TX-RZ730 amp with a "chromcast built in" still showing FW 1.36
NOT FW 1.56 like the other 2x now working stand alone chromcasts (thankyou for fixing)
this meens i am still with out an option of how to play audio (cast audio) in my livingroom
after a long chat with yousrselves it looks like the man will have to fix (but this amp is old and onkyo will not)
i would not be against buyin a new chrome cast audio but you do not sell them any ideas?

hello I did the trick to change date to previous 8 march  as many users on both my chromecast, it was working but now since yesterday it doesn't work anymore (picture image chromecast blinking), please tell what should be done

They released a fix already for it. If you haven't been able to fix through the home app call their customer service.

I am still having problems after reconnecting my chromecast. it connected once and then it stopped working

Hi guys, 

I have a Chromecast 2nd generation. I did factory reset and I still cannot connect. I go through all steps and when the Chromecast tries to connect to the WI-FI network I get the message "Connection problem during setup. Could not communicate with your Chromecast."  Any ideas why that might be? 

it is impossible to  reach out to customer support for further assistance. how you do that ?

hey Google if you think that blocking old chromecast, will make me buying a new one, you are making a big mistake

Since Google has voluntarily discontinued support or made Chromecasts unusable without a valid technical justification, this is considered a form of planned obsolescence. Violation of consumer rights: Consumers have the right to use a product under normal conditions for a reasonable period of time. If a device is rendered obsolete for arbitrary reasons, this could be considered an infringement of their rights. The discontinuation of services has been demonstrated to be a business strategy. Lack of transparency: If Google has not clearly informed users of the discontinuation of support or the consequences for the affected devices, this constitutes a breach of its duty to inform.

Ya han pasado 8 días desde q aseguraron q el 20 marzo, llegaría a todos los usuarios/clientes del chromecast de 2°generación, la actual del dispositivo q permite resolver este problema global, pero yo, q estoy en Guayaquil, Ecuador,  no llega a la play store, la famosa actualización.  Me pregunto  y segurament, muchos más se harán la pregunta:¿ cuando llega la bendita actuación q nos permita utilizar un dispositivo por el q pagamos y confiamos?....

In early March, it seems like there was some kind of bug that affected Chromecasts gen 2 globally. They were pretty much bricked for 10 days or so... Google "fixed" the issue, and since then I have lost the ability to cast media to any chromecast or speaker in my house. I have restarted each device, I have reset the modem/router, I have updated the app. When I try to factory reset a speaker, it says it was 'set up correctly' but can't connect to wifi. 

I can use voice commands to play media, but given the abysmal performance of the Google Assistant, this is like shooting a gun with a blind fold on hoping to have the correct song/show/etc play on the correct device.  Once something is playing, I can control the volume in the devices overview panel, but if I click on that device it claims nothing is playing and I can't connect to it. 

So basically, every media player in my house is 75%-90% brick status.

I have emailed the support address that is listed in the Google Play store for the Home App (I received an email saying that Google doesn't monitor that address.... the address listed as a support address in their own store... for their own app), I've been sending feedback from the app daily - and received no response, I have mentioned these issues in a 1 star review and was given a generic support FAQ for the EU (?)...

At some point, I have to just give up and dispose of all of this hardware, which, as a consequence will mean removing my house from all things google. Email, Workspace, Youtube, Android... Why would I continue to use products that can fail catastrophically without so much as a peep from the company.

My device decided that was not going to work today, same issue as several weeks ago, not sure what to do at this point 

I have Gen 2 chromecast.  I did factory reset the device after the issue. Now, I have updated Home app. After setting up the chromecast, It is offline in home app and there is no cast option.

P.s : chromecast is connected to wifi and it is in screen saver. 

Any recommendations please?
