Streamer flashing black randomly

Crunchyice
Community Member

I have a Google Streamer and LG TV. The streamer replaced a Chromecast on the same tv.  When streaming from various services (Netflix, etc.) the screen will flash black momentarily. I disabled all Dolby Video options on the tv.

Before I disabled Dolby Video it sometimes also flashed pink, so I guess this is a step on the right direction.

The Chromecast never did this.  Any ideas?

Hi Crunchyice,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are having video quality issues when using your Google TV Streamer with your LG TV. But no need to worry, I’d be happy to help!

Before we get started with further troubleshooting, let me ask you some important questions:

  1. When did the issue start?
  2. Have you used the Google TV Streamer before without any video quality issues?
  3. Have you tried using the streaming device on a different TV? Does it show the same behavior?
  4. Are you able to provide the LG TV’s model or model number?

Here are some basic troubleshooting steps:

  1. Unplug, then re-plug the Google streaming device in the High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port, ensuring the connector is plugged all the way in.
  2. Use the TV or HDMI extender. The Google TV Streamer (4K) needs to use a cable that supports 4K and HDMI 2.1.
  3. Plug in the streaming device into other HDMI ports on the same TV.
  4. Use the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer with another TV or HDMI display, if possible.

Additional checks: Please try to disable the HDMI UHD Color setting on the TV.

In case it helps, you can also review this article when the TV has no signal or only shows a black screen.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Regards,

Mario

Yeah, it is still happening.  Today the screen hasn't flashed black, but we've either seen green or pink.

Responding to ChaconMorales' questions:

  1. When did the issue start? It has done it from the beginning.  Chromecast never had this issue but this device does.
  2. Have you used the Google TV Streamer before without any video quality issues? I've never had the streamer not do it - it has happened since day one. Chromecast, firetv, etc., are fine.
  3. Have you tried using the streaming device on a different TV? Does it show the same behavior? I'll have to try it on a different TV tomorrow.
  4. Are you able to provide the LG TV’s model or model number? My TV is an LG OLED65c2aua that is less than a year old.

This is the cable I'm using.  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09HXPZ1PQ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

Hi @Crunchyice

Thanks for your response and the additional information.

To isolate the issue, please try the following:

  • Unplug the Google streaming device from the HDMI port, ensure the connector is fully inserted, then plug it back in.
  • Use the TV or HDMI extender: If available, try using the TV's built-in HDMI port or an HDMI extender.
  • Try other HDMI ports: Plug the streaming device into different HDMI ports on the same TV.
  • Check TV compatibility: If the issue persists on all HDMI ports, it's possible that your TV make and model has compatibility issues with Google streaming devices.
  • Test with another TV: If possible, try using the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer with a different TV or HDMI display.

Please let me know how these steps go so I can continue to assist you and help you resolve the issue.

Thanks,

Catheryn

Yep, I've tried everything.  My new streamer doesn't work with my new LG tv but works with an old Samsung TV.  Different ports, a brand new cable, etc.  doesn't fix it.  I've used the streamer for hours on the old TV and it is fine, but the new TV gives me the flashing.

There hasn't been any kind of follow up Virnab.  Do you happen to have an update from Google on whether there is a way to fix this issues that many users are having?

Hi Virnab.  We've had a lot of different LG owners and few other manufacturer owners who are experiencing this problem.  Is there any update from the development team about identifying the problem and potentially fixing it?

I'm seeing the same exact symptoms now on my LG c4 as of today.

Maybe it is an LG thing.  Honestly, I wish I hadn't bought an LG.  The picture is very good but WebOS is lacking.

Same problem here. Intermittent green / purple kind of flash happening with Google Streamer and on LG OLED48C16LA. Same on Panasonic.

Happens with Netflix, apple+, prime app... Quite annoying. Seems like a bug? As I see quite a lot of similar posts

Same problem here with my LG OLED. Need to have Google look into this.

I replaced my Nvidia Shield with a new Google Streamer on my LG CX Oled and I'm seeing the same problems, random black flickering while watching TV.  I've noticed it mainly with Netflix, admittedly I don't use the other services much.   Yesterday I replaced the HDMI cable with a brand new one and still same problem.  Went through and updated any outstanding apps, none were Netflix though, and checked for system updates (there were none). Power cycled the streamer a few times, both through the settings restart menu and pulling the power plug from the back.  I'm not using Wifi, have a cat6 cable behind my TV.

Having the same issue ever since i swapped my chromecast 4k for the streamer. My tv is a LG C1.

Happens on pretty much any streaming app. It seems normal on youtube and 4k

Something to do with HRD, Dolby Vision or something along those lines.

I have the same problem with my Philips 70PUS6724 TV.  I'll probably have to return the device when the problem hasn't been fixed in two months.

I have the same issue with TCL QM751.  The Streamer is the only device I have problems with

Add me to the list. I also have a LG C1. I noticed my audio volume lowering and the center channel disappearing for some reason after the recovery of the black screen. Only way to recover the regular volume audio is to restart the Streamer. Frustrating since it happens quite often.

Same on my LG OLED c4, cant use the tv Streamer. All 2 seconds for 1 second black Screen....

I'm also having this issue with  my LG OLED C series.

Having the same issue on Sony Bravia. This TV streamer is so much more problematic than the Chromecast. Any fixes yet or is it still a paperweight?

I am also having issues with my TV strobing purple and also green, ever since day one. I also have a LG OLED TV. I have a new high speed cable for HDMI.. which was one of my first troubleshooting steps... Power cycles etc etc. I have done a bunch of troubleshooting. I narrowed the issue down with trial and error to frame rate syncing while Dolby vision is enabled.

I had purple flashes with syncing on seamless and green, way less frequently with it in on. I found a show today on netflix, "missing you" s1e1 that was flashing green every 30 sec or so. I turned frame rate sync off, and haven't noticed any more flashing since... However, instead of flashing - the show jerks like it skips ahead ten frames.

Same on my Samsung. Infuriating.

Same issue on a Vizio. Hoping this fixed somewhat soon as this makes content unwatchable.

I have the same issue, millisecond glitch in pink or green a few minutes apart.

I had the Google TV Chromecast before and did not have that issue. Updated to premium cables.

Using a Sony STR-DH790 AV receiver and a Sony KD-55XF9005 TV.

Some have suggested that it is due to handshake for apps to check so there is no recording device between TV and Streamer.

Same on LGb7a running plex on 4k TV streamer. HDR/DV content. Very annoying. Would be a real darn shame if this is truly due to some 'recording prevention' feature.

jonas740

Ye, I have done a lot of digging and what people suggest is that it is because "handshake" for recording prevention.

I get theese issues with Netflix and other apps mainly using Dolby Vision and HDR I have noticed.

Been trying to run the Streamer to TV direct and also via my AV receiver and same annoying thing happens.

As far as I tested, the issue has yet to occur when watching content through Kodi.

I also have the previous 4K Google tv chromecast and that does not suffer from theese issues strange enough.

If I could return my streamer I would. I have a ticket open at Google just for that.

There could be a fix if you try the following wich I have yet to try.

Go into your Google Streamer settings and change fram rate matching from "Seamless only" to "Always".

I have not tested it yet, but do try it to see if it makes any difference.

Most people report that this phenomena occurs mostly during Dolby Vision content.

This and manually setting 4k60hz has done it for me. It is more of a workaround though. But it works.

I am on the latest firmware BTW

Also changing the setting for screen resolution from "Auto" to "4K 60Hz" can help resolve the issue.

As far as I see it this is software/firmware related and Google need to fix this.

Which firmware version fixes it, exactly? There has not been a firmware release for the TV Streamer for some time now, so we are all likely on the latest release. Are they talking about an upcoming release?

Just checked today and i still have no update. Is it being released in some countries first or global release?
Also which version fixes it? Is there a change log? And can we manually download and install it?
