Unable to change channels on YouTube TV with Google nest mini

Ryan_1

Using the Google home app, Chromecast, and the Google nest mini, I am unable to change channels on YouTube TV. I can control everything else with voice except for changing channels on YouTube TV.

Hi everyone,

The work ticket for the bug is still not closed, which means it’s still being worked on or hasn't reached its completion. For those that are experiencing it up and down, I suggest you put in the details as you send feedback. For those who already have it working, I suggest you observe and send feedback if something comes up.

I hope this gets resolved soon. We’re almost there, folks.

Thanks,

Kimy

I am still having this issue. HiSense Google TV, no command I issue to an assistant devices seems to have an impact on the TV. I get a similar response as previous post mentioned - assistant repeats the command then says something like "sorry I don't understand".

It started "not understanding" again December 22ish

Well it's been working for me. However, when it was first fixed it was nice and crisp and responded quickly to changing Channels by voice. The last few days, after another Google update, I've noticed long delays and it seems like Assistant is struggling to come up with the correct response.  I wouldn't be too quick to call this a success.

Its "not" doing it again

Hi, I'm not having any trouble using my Google Nest Hub 2  changing channels by voice. Once in a while I noticed the system will lag and not respond as quickly as it first did. But after a while it seems to straighten itself out and changing channels by voice will my Sony KD-50X85J works pretty well overall. Running a Samsung Galaxy S9 and all Google and android updates.

Hi everyone,

Is this happening again? Can you confirm that you’re getting the exact same problem as it was when you first reported this?

We look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Yes exactly the same

Hello Kimy and others, I'm not having any problems with Google Assistant at the moment  changing channels or operating the volume and other TV functions  on my Sony  Bravia KD-50X85J TV.  I can successfully change channels by voice  and operate volume controls etc. and have been for a number of weeks now. On my end at least, I'm not having any issues other than the typical ones associated with this technology. I'm using a 2018 Samsung S9 phone for my cell phone and app  with all associated software updates.  I also using a Google Nest   Hub 2 Mini  to operate my TV and other associated Google voice activated devices and  are mostly  Google manufactured devices with the exception of an air purifier.

jz

I find one strange part of your post that forces a question...

"or operating the volume and other TV functions"

If you say to a nest device, not a TV remote "Hey Google turn up the TV volume" it responds "use the TV remote to adjust volume..."

I can use any Nest device to turn on the TV, pause or play but currently if I ask any of my Nest devices to "Watch NBC on YouTube TV" it repeats my command the replies "sorry I didn't understand"

I have no problem changing channels by voice command. I just say play ABC for instance and it will change the channel to ABC or whatever channel I choose. But your problem is exactly the problem that I previously had. I hope they get it fixed for you.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply, @MX5Racer. I can’t confirm as of the moment if the bug really came back since we haven’t received confirmation from other users here in this thread that it did on their end as well. I will forward your case to our support team instead. Kindly fill out this form and let me know once it’s done so I can forward it to them.

We appreciate your participation here, @jzlako2001. Since you’re not experiencing the bug anymore, what particular help do you need with your Chromecast device?

Best,

Kimy

I'm good right now Kimy. I'm just trying to help someone else who posted to the forum. All of my Google Nest voice commands and devices  seem to be working for me.

I'm experiencing a similar issue, and just submitted a form.  when i ask google assistant to "tune to espn on youtube tv on basement tv" it responds as if it is performing the task, but does not actually tune to that channel.  it then says, "sorry, it looks like channel espn isn't available."  i'm definitely subscribed to espn via my youtube tv account.  is there a step i'm missing in setting this up?  or am i experiencing the bug that is mentioned on this thread?

I just asked google almost the exact phrase with Den TV instead of Basement TV

My result worked

note: I say "watch" instead of "tune to"

Hi folks,

We’re glad that yours is working now, @Ajcyr.

@B_RadAF, have you tried what @MX5Racer suggested? And what steps have you tried so far? Based on your description of the issue, it doesn’t seem to fall under the bug itself. But troubleshooting this might help us resolve it.

A reminder for everyone not to waste their time filling out the form because it will just be ignored if it’s not validated. We need to flag the user first so that your form will be valid. We will verify the situation first before we flag it. Valid forms are then forwarded to the support team.

Let us know if there are users who are still experiencing the exact bug. If it’s an issue with Google Assistant functions but not the exact bug, feel free to create a new thread, and we’ll assist you from there.

We look forward to your responses.

Sincerely,

Kimy

Thanks for the quick reply! (This is the same user as B_RadAF, but I used my spouse’s account last time accidentally). I agree now that my issue is not the same as the rest of this thread’s.

my voice commands work perfectly fine when watching on a different display (like the nest hub). So I think my issue is the Vizio interface with Google Assistant. No need to troubleshoot this any further. I can get the assistant to open YouTube TV on my Vizio TV, and am fine to use the remote to change channels from there.

thanks again @Kimy  and @MX5Racer !

This bug just resurfaced on one of my chromecasts. Give a chrome mini a command play xxxx on kitchen TV. Reports back ok playing xxxx on kitchen TV. Nothing plays and  seconds later the mini Reports I don't understand.

I've had some similar problems recently with my Google Chromecast HD. I could change channels by voice successfully, but my TV would not turn on by voice even after trying various  troubleshooting solutions. However, I rebooted my TV and all of my Chromecast devices and for me, I'm back up and running pretty well again. One of the first things I do, is give the problem a few days to see if it doesn't fix itself.  But maybe I was just lucky… But I do agree some things have been going on with the execution of voice commands.

Hi folks,

We appreciate your input here, @jzlako2001. We’re glad that yours is finally working as it should.

@wkrasner, try basic troubleshooting first, like a sequential reboot for the involved devices, and see if it helps. After all, this bug has been fixed. Chances are a similar bug may arise, and if it does, swarms of posts will come in just like this thread.

I also suggest that if anything arises, if it’s not the exact bug as this, kindly create a new thread so we can send a new report for immediate investigation (given that troubleshooting has been done).

Thanks,

Kimy

I've had my TV working as well. Hisense TV from Costco. My fix had to do with changing the name of the TV in Google home.

I also use "Hey Google" play ABC, ESPN, Foxnews, etc. with good success. I also try occasionally even when I don't know what I'm looking for like a football game, "Hey Google" play Eagles NFL game. I've also had good success using "Hey Google" change channel to command," fr whatever channel I'm looking for  I.e. Smithsonian channel etc.
