Unable to put chromecast in pairing mode

My chromecast remote does not work with the chromecast. I'm currently trying to get it to pair to the chromecast by putting both in pairing mode, but I'm unable to enter pairing mode on the chromecast.

For entering pairing mode I've tried the following:

1. Press the button on the actual chromecast - nothing happens
2. In the Google Home app, click the chromecast -> go to Settings -> Audio -> Paired Bluetooth devices - paired devices isn't an option under audio
3. In the Google TV app, set Android up as a remote - can't find the 'Remote' button

Non pairing mode things I have tried include

1. Factory reset the chromecast - I don't get any screen asking about pairing devices
2. Changed remote batteries
3. Factory reset the remote

Firstly, what model of Chromecast do you have? A newer Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, or an older Chromecast (1st-3rd gen/ultra)?
