I change wifi provider today and I can't connect to my chromecast. Here are all the things I tried already.
with it plugged in I pressed and held the button until it turned white.
Plugged it out for more than 5 minutes, during that time I pressed and held the reset button > 30 seconds.
Disconnected wifi and bluetooth on android and turned them back on
plugged out the router > 5 minutes and turned it back on
Split the SSID 2Gh and 5Gh and tried both of those connections.
The chromecast is intermittently showing pretty pictures. Not it's showing can't connect with a code. I can find that on the phone on Home app and see the same code there but when I select Yes and progress to the next step it keeps saying I have to do a factory reset. I DID THAT SEVERAL TIMES NOW - NOTHING!
The other way it suggests is to select the device within the home app and forget the network but it's not listed there so I can't do that.
two hours now I'm at this. I give up.
If someone has a magic fix I would be so greatful

For a 3rd gen you press and hold the button until it turns white..and at that point it should restart and reset.. what exactly happens when you press and hold till it turns white ?

I'm able to connect to it via the phone i see the same code I click Yes then select the wifi then i get the message it was previously set up by a different user. Please factory reset the device. I tried unplugging it for five minutes, I pressed the button for 30 seconds while it was unplugged. While it was plugged in after being unplugged I pressed and held the button until it turned white. I'm just going round in circles here

Okay so when it says factory reset you need to press and hold the button for 30 seconds until it turns white. Don't do it while it's powered off as that does nothing, or when it's just powering on, it needs to be fully powered and on when you start the reset. Give that a try and report back! Thanks!

One other thing, does the device show up in your Google home app? If so click the settings cog and remove the device before trying to set it up

It keeps trying to connect to my old wifi which no longer exists

That means it didn't factory reset.

and that is the problem!. I have pressed the button several times when it's plugged in and orange until it goes white. Then I try to reconnect and it tells me to reset. I did that when I pressed the button. The device appears and I see the code but when I try to connect it says AGAIN that I have to reset it. I can't reset it from the cog because that wifi it was on is no longer active and it's not showing up in the cog on my new wifi

Okay to be clear... You are not holding the button long enough. Is your TV on? If not...turn it on. When you can see the Chromecast on your screen, press the button. Don't let go. Keep holding it down until the screen goes black. Forget looking at the device.. look at the screen

I held it in until my finger nearly fell off. It started displaying pictures. So then I tried to add the device on my Home app. I saw the code, selected a room and selected my new wifi the then again I get the message to reset the device. I repeated the above for my other wifi SSID (I split them) and still get the same message. Why is this so F**KING complicated ???

If you are holding the button until the screen goes blank and the light goes white and it's not resetting, then I suppose you could have a faulty unit.
Only other thing I can possibly think of is trying to rename your new wifi with the same SSID and password as your old one to see if you can get it to connect that way... But it's doubtful.

Just in case there is some sort of miscommunication..here's a video on how to factory reset, and what you should be seeing on the screen - https://youtu.be/WqDcCpgAFXs?si=CjTtlThDLlAv26fe
