"No device found" - Can't cast on my laptop

chromecast_fail
Community Member

Hey all, I can't connect my windows laptop to chromecast.

I have reset the chromecast multiple times, I have rebooted my laptop multiple times, all the devices are on the same connection. I can cast from my android phone, iphone and macbook but my TV nor my device is found when I try to cast. If all these other devices are able to connect, maybe it's my chrome browser? It is up to date and I have even reinstalled it a couple times.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi @chromecast_fail,

I understand how frustrating it must be to be unable to cast from your Windows laptop to your Chromecast when all your other devices work seamlessly. It seems the issue is isolated to the Windows laptop, as other devices can connect successfully. This suggests a potential problem with the laptop's network settings, Chrome browser, or a specific software conflict.

Potential Solutions:

Network related issue:

Check Network Settings:

  • Ensure both the laptop and Chromecast are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Verify that the network is set to "Private" rather than "Public" on the laptop.
  • Disable any VPN or proxy settings that might interfere.

Router Troubleshooting:

  • Reboot your router to refresh the network connection.
  • Check for firmware updates on the router.
  • Temporarily disable any network security features (like firewalls) to isolate the issue.

Chrome browser issue

  1. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies:
    • This can resolve conflicts or corrupted data.
  2. Disable Extensions:
    • Temporarily disable all Chrome extensions to see if any are causing the problem.
  3. Reinstall Chrome:
    • If other troubleshooting steps fail, try reinstalling Chrome.

Windows system issue

  1. Update Windows:
    • Ensure your Windows operating system is up-to-date.
  2. Check Firewall Settings:
    • Make sure Chrome and Chromecast are allowed through the firewall.
  3. Run Network Troubleshooter:
    • Windows has a built-in network troubleshooter that might identify and fix issues.

Additional Tips:

  • Try a Different Casting App:
    • Some users have reported success with casting apps other than Chrome.
  • Check Chromecast Firmware:
    • Although unlikely, ensure your Chromecast has the latest firmware.
  • Try a Different Wi-Fi Channel:
    • Interference from other devices can sometimes be resolved by changing the Wi-Fi channel.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, provide more details about your setup:

  • Laptop model and operating system
  • Chromecast model
  • Wi-Fi router model
  • Any recent changes to your network or computer setup
  • Specific error messages or behaviors you're experiencing

By providing more information, we can offer more tailored troubleshooting advice.

Regards,

Josh

None of these solutions have worked for me - I can see the cast button - but still says no device found - I did a 'reset to default apps' would that have made a difference?   What else can I check on my PC?

  • Laptop model and operating system - Sony Viao
  • Chromecast model (if you do not know the model of your device, it will be enough if you let us know what color it is). - BLACK
  • Wi-Fi router model - BT SMART HUB 2
  • Any recent changes to your network or computer setup - NONE
  • Specific error messages or behaviors you're experiencing

Under the 3 dots at the top right - there used to be an option saying - 'cast' that has now moved further down and says 'Cast, save and share'

Also The cast square - used to allow Cast Screen and Cast Tab - now only says Cast Tab

  • What happens when you tap in the cast icon of your laptop?

No Device Found

I have set up the HOME properly on my Android - but Google Chrome on my laptop is still not detecting my TV.

Hope that helps..and await your reply.

The TV is a Samsung EU32EH5000W

Hi @Kay57!

Thanks for sharing this important information that is allowing me to go deeper to find a resolution.

I have one more recommendation to suggest:

  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your laptop.
  • Try casting again.
  • On your laptop, from the cast icon, tap in the optioncast, save, and share." It will display a list of devices identified, and you will be able to see the name of your TV.
  • Select the name of your TV.

Let me know if you can cast now.

I tried all of that and it still didn't work!

My windows is up to date, I've only got one network to connect to and network settings are just as you've recommended.

I moved homes and suddenly it won't connect and I can't cast so I don't think it's really the settings that have changed.

Solution found - in case it helps anyone else...

I uninstalled the Google Home App and reinstalled it - it worked and was that simple.
