Dear Nest Support Team,
I am deeply disappointed by Google’s decision to discontinue support for my Nest Learning Thermostat (1st/2nd gen). This device was marketed as a long-term smart home investment, and abruptly rendering core features obsolete-including app control and remote access-undermines trust in your products.
While I appreciate the $130 discount on the 4th-gen model, this does not fully offset the inconvenience of forced obsolescence. Many users, myself included, purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality. The sudden loss of smart features (despite hardware still functioning) feels like a deliberate push to monetize loyal customers.
Key concerns:
Lack of long-term support commitments at the time of purchase
No option for third-party app integration post-discontinuation
Environmental impact of discarding functional devices
I urge Google to reconsider this decision or extend the upgrade offer’s value. At minimum, provide concrete steps for users to retain basic smart functionality through alternative means. Or, Is there anything else you can offer me? Like a free upgrade and installation. It is no fault of mine that you are choosing to discontinue my service.
Sincerely,
Ruby Wilder

I settled on ecobee for thermostats although they may do the same when I searched it seems like it was a little older device they did this to. I also decided on reolink camera and doorbell using scrypted for Apple home secure video works great!

Count me in on one of those customers who will not play the game. I paid $250/ea for 2 Nest thermostats early never thinking they would become obsolete for the features I was purchasing them for. App control, scheduling, etc. They have worked well does years and have been happy with them but I will not replace them with Google products. I appreciate that they are a business but my money will go elsewhere.

First thing - this is a bad step by Google. In terms of the suggested replacement (£80 with discount in the UK) did anyone go for it? Was it easy to install (presumably you have to replace the NEST controller at the boiler too?) and are there any annual/monthly service costs associated with using it?

I replaced mine yesterday with the tado. Very easy to install but the quality compared to the nest is awfull. Cheap plastic with a mono display and im finding the app to over crowded with features that I will never use.

Look into Honeywell Home, if you decide that one will not do .

Is google even listening?? I agree with everyone here that discontinuing support is one thing, but stopping our ability to continue with current app integration is ridiculous. It works. Why stop it?
GOOGLE, you know better. Now DO better.

Yes my son has 5 devices (5 zones) that he may have to replace in a single home. Each was purchased at $250 a piece! Now, multiply that by the number of user configuration represented by those here with complaints and you are talking millions of dollars in this money grab! Making America Great Again eh???

We need to do a Jimmy Kemel here!

I also find this disgraceful, forcing perfectly good products to be sent to “recycling” when in reality very little will be able to be reused. Not very eco.
I don’t see any reason why the functionality should be removed other than forcing us to upgrade.
I will not be paying for an upgrade and will never buy another google product. I’m absolutely disgusted

I say let’s start a class action lawsuit! I have 10 Nest thermostats between two residences. If I have to replace them to regain remote control, I sure won’t use Nest/Google ones!

I too am disappointed. I can’t upgrade to the newest Nests as two of three locations have no C wire and I don’t wish to spend the money to fish new wires to the location. The old nests worked fine without a C wire which the new ones and indeed most if not all the competitive thermostats require the C wire I also have a simple oil fired boiler and don’t need and can’t make use of the all features in the new Nests. We are also retired to the home/away feature doesn’t do much for us as we are home most days. I will be replacing my Nests with simple relatively inexpensive programmable thermostats that will run without a C wire.

I’m disappointed too. What a greedy, cynical business decision.
Friday
Having truly enjoyed the Nest app and range of projects. I an sadly considering another platform.
My Nest gen 1 thermostat works flawlessly, and I am unable to find the Google replacement disconnect offer in my email or online.
Monday
I entirely agree. I am disabled and rely on on being able to remotely adjust temperature. I am suprise they are allow to do this
Tuesday
Adding myself to the long list of dis-satisfied google customers. First you crippled my nest cam. Then you disabled home compatible devices like the early bose soundbars. Now my thermostats! When it comes to household items the expectation is that these products work for a very long time. And you offer me a replacement for $150? No thanks! I will now replace them with thermostats from Honeywell, who has proven their respect for customers with products that last for decades. I will then replace my home speakers as quickly as possible and get myself off the google home/assistant. I hope others will do the same as you are not worthy of our loyalty.
yesterday
To Google ...
Hi
yesterday
Both my Nest thermostats will now be obsolete. I plan to 100% NOT use a Google related product for the replacement.
yesterday
100%. We purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality.

What the hell? I try to contact Google and I’m just redirected to a page full of people who feel the same way with NO RESPONSE FROM GOOGLE.
I bought my thermostat from NEST. not Google. Ever since Google bought nest it has not worked well at all. I’ve had to just turn off the “learning” feature since it would only do things like turn my thermostat down immediately after I manually adjusted it (again and again).
then they tanked the app and wanted us to switch to Google home which is a dumpster fire. It’s just so pathetic how they buy things and tank them or tank things that you pay for. Why on earth would we want to dive deeper into this eco system?
just the effort of buying, installing, and configuring a new thermostat is such a pain when it’s completely unnecessary. I have two small children and my wife is recovering from cancer and now admist all of that I have to figure out what to do with our thermostat???
there’s no technical reason to drop support. It’s all greed. Just let us see the thermostat on our phone and adjust the temp. How hard is that. Don’t make this such a headache. Don’t be greedy. I don’t see how this is legal at all.
