Dear Nest Support Team,
I am deeply disappointed by Google’s decision to discontinue support for my Nest Learning Thermostat (1st/2nd gen). This device was marketed as a long-term smart home investment, and abruptly rendering core features obsolete-including app control and remote access-undermines trust in your products.
While I appreciate the $130 discount on the 4th-gen model, this does not fully offset the inconvenience of forced obsolescence. Many users, myself included, purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality. The sudden loss of smart features (despite hardware still functioning) feels like a deliberate push to monetize loyal customers.
Key concerns:
Lack of long-term support commitments at the time of purchase
No option for third-party app integration post-discontinuation
Environmental impact of discarding functional devices
I urge Google to reconsider this decision or extend the upgrade offer’s value. At minimum, provide concrete steps for users to retain basic smart functionality through alternative means. Or, Is there anything else you can offer me? Like a free upgrade and installation. It is no fault of mine that you are choosing to discontinue my service.
Sincerely,
Ruby Wilder

Not buying any more products from Google

For the first and second quarter of 2025 Google's parent, Alphabet had $96.4 billion in revenue, a 14% increase over 2024 and a market cap of $3.1 trillion. Next Wednesday, 10/29 they'll be announcing their 3rd quarter results. We'll see how much of a hit they've taken from those of us on here that decided to abandon their ecosystem. Too big to give a rat's behind!!

Count me in as a very angry user. Why should we have to pay anything for a replacement. This is so wrong!!

I was a Google Fanboy... first a defective Nest caused us to unecesarily replace our AC unit (3 diff. companies could not find the problem.) I replaced the thermostat w/ Ecobee b/c the pros recommended them and I was pissed off at Google. Then they pull support for the 1st and 2nd gen. so now our second thermostat will be another Ecobee and I will tell everyone I know not to support Google's Nest products. Who is running this company?????

I’ve been very pleased with the Nest thermostat and my main reason for purchasing it was to be able to remotely control my heating system.
if I have to dump a perfectly good piece of technology, I certainly won’t be purchasing another from the same company so I guess someone like Hive will be the benefactor of Google’s decision.

Not a problem for google, Google is being nice just return your old one and they will send you a new one all you pay for is shipping which is only $229.00 !!!!!!!!!!!**bleep** Google............

Well folks, today is the day they are cutting us off. How do you all feel about it? Is your thermostat service now offline? Let your profanities be heard!

There are NO words to describe the frustration and anger Google has caused in so many people's lives due to their decision to stop supporting our NEST thermostats. They have taught us a very valuable lesson; never buy anything Google sales....

This has been a nightmare for us. Long time, early adaptor - Nest users in our 29 year old residence (2 nests) and 38 year old vacation home (2 nests). We had a flood in our second home due a malfuntioning heating system and freezing pipes so wanted to insure it didn't happen again.
Our ultility had a deal on the nest thermostats so we ordered them. We installed the original ones ourselves. When we tried to install the new ones, we found out we needed a Connector according to Google for all 4! This is after hours of dealing with them, being disconnected several times, and tring to install the connector ourselves. Before we even got to this point we spent hours dealing with google, telling them our equipment, etc and congiguration.
We had to hire an installer and paid for an estimate - apparently our 25 year old gas boiler is operated by a transformer and the connector won't work. Our installer says we need C wires and that they can install for $600 each!
Google help was useless.
Money and time wasted - not sure any of the competitors will work with our old equipment that is working perfectly. Most costs to get a refund to send back to utility.
Insane design. Unlike the old nest thermostats these have regular batterys in them. Why do they need another battery back up? Looks like over design that is soley to generate revenue for Google. They should not be in hardware businesses.

I find it hard to believe that a fully functional item will not be supported. Perhaps the threat of a glass action lawsuit might get them to concede and continue support. Would love your thoughts

I'm sure their lawyers have long ago predicted this and made the calculations. I just installed my new Ecobee. I recommend them!

Thanks there isba class action suit developing! I will look at the ecobee.

Signed up for the Class Action Lawsuit, hope it bears fruit for all Nest owners who have been screwed by Google.
Thanks JetSet17 for the link! Everyone should sign up....

Like most class actions the lawyers will get the majority of the money and the rest will be split amongst the plaintiffs, perhaps 3 bucks each. If you are lucky

Just to be clear, this is NOT a "Class Action Lawsuit." This is a firm that solicits interest from class action litigators and mass arbitrators to initiate and pursue litigation on others' behalf. Your signing up simply adds to their headcount as a way of demonstrating the strength and size of a prospective "Class."

Exceptionally Disappointing Move, Google
There really is no reason other than profit to terminate functionality for items already purchased. I agree with 99% of the comments - very much thanks but no thanks for forcing purchases on 4th generation tech.
Google, this is exceptionally disappointing. Will definitely not be expanding into any Google tech going forward. You're supposed to be unique - better, not disappointingly just like everyone else.

Hi,
I am also very disappointed in the decision that Google has made. My Nest Thermostat is working just fine, and now out of the blue you have taken about the best thing about it, the ability to manage it remotely be it from my second floor or before I board the plane. I am very unhappy with this decision and I don't see why I have to go out and spend money when mine is working just fine.
Ok, so you don't want to support it, that's fine but don't take away the basic remote features that interested me in the device in the first place. Why? This only makes sense to a corporation that wants us to consume products that A) can't be recycled B) will only damage the environment.
So now you are forcing a bunch of people who took the plunge and believed in the product in the early days to change their devices, all so you can get a bump to your Q4 2025 earnings. What are you going to do in Q4 2026 to beat this quarters earnings? Very short sighted.
I want my remote connectivity back.
Thank you very much,
Eric P Sharvelle

Just vote with your pocket book. Ecobee is a great option. We've all got to be realistic though... all of our connected devices will someday be left behind. 10 years... 20 years? THis is the march of "progress."

Dear Nest Google you tell us to buy your device's to save energy and now you want to to throw out a perfectly working thermostat because you want me to buy a newer version. This is waste of money and ecologically not logical support old thermostats again!!!

This is absolutely ridiculous.
If I buy a tv they don’t come to my house and steal the remote. How is a company even able to do this. This is like false advertising.
I wouldn’t have bought a product that’s said on the box in a few years we will take away your ability to control it remotely.
so soooo sooo disappointing

So disappointed with Google
That is just pure greed!
I’m trying to contact them to have a reasonable explanation why do I need to buy a new one if my is working perfectly fine. Why they are doing that?
so pathetic!
After I read a hand full of comments I decided to toss my nest and get another Brand.
screw greed google!
i hope no one buys it anymore!

I checked my email; there was no warning of this in any correspondence.
Frankly, Google can lean on the "read the small print" mantra as much as it likes, in this household we are boycotting Google goods in the same way many in the U.S ditched Disney. We have their phones, thermostats, watches, home devices - in fact they are everywhere in our lives. However, they have just proved they cannot be trusted by withdrawing services without any functional reason to do so. They just want to make yet more money like some sort of greed-crazed mania fuelled monster. There is an easy way to kill a monster - just ask Disney after they bent knee to the greed-pack (MAGA)
With a company like Microsoft, I actually get it. Tech moves on. So, what is the excuse for tech that is still relevant and functional, other than the fact that this greedy tech company wants to make yet more money? Isn't the extra money you make in the U.S. at the expense of the poor's health enough for you, Google?
Consider yourselves ditched - and yes, should a viable alternative come up we'll ditch your search engine and email services too, because who is to say in a decade or so you won't start charging extra for all that and cutting me off from almost everything.
Raises middle finger, and walks away...

This is hard to believe that they can do this. I can certainly understand an older product needing to maybe fall off the support side of things. But to not allow me to just change it via my phone on a closed network seems ridiculous. Both of my thermostats still look really nice and elegant in my home. They work perfectly and I’ve never had an issue with them. The fact that a company can decide to force me into either upgrading or changing a product that I purchased from them is just ridiculous. As much that I would say I am a fan of Google as a company, this decision has really changed my opinion of their brand and decision-making when it comes to their consumers that support them. Extremely disappointed in this decision. The only correct path that they should have here if they wanted to do this, would be to fully replace my existing thermostats with new ones, and not just give a discount. Which at this point, I have no way to find receipts from that many years ago. There are so many things about this that are unsettling to me.

I am also livid about this!!! Google it's just BAD BUSINESS

Frankly, I think what Google has done is illegal and they ought to be sued for this. They have leveraged their access to homes to coerce everyone into spending hundreds of dollars (we have 3 generation 1 & 2 nests). It's a disgusting ripoff.

Seriously. As much as I am disappointed inGoogles decision I have lots of devices no longer supported and barely functional. My Harmony universal remote can’t be programmed with a Mac anymore. My old still functional laptop iBook only lives to be able to configure my equally old Airort Express. But Apple didn’t do anything g to disable these but they require extra effort to maintain. My 1960 Crane boiler still worked but it want keeping with the times. I replaced it and cut my oil bill 25%. Old antiques that work but not well. The old Nests worked just fine with my system as it can’t make any use of any of the extended features of the new Nests ( or Ecobee for that matter). So yes Google. It is not like these were a big security risk if they weren’t connected to Google Home , Alexa etc. so I think just not doing upgrades with a caveat to users there might be security risks would have sufficed. The last time my Neats got a software upgrade was 2019. I bought two relatively inexpensive Sensi wireless thermostats. They work fine nothing fancy but I do notice they hold a mort constant to than the Nests
Monday
We’ve introduced a new fun rule in our family. Whenever someone wants to change the temperature, instead of saying “OK Google, set the temperature to…”, they have to say “F*** Google, set the temperature to…”. Then, the nearest family member is obliged to get up and adjust the thermostat manually.
On a serious note, I also work in electonic hardware business — designing, manufacturing, programming, and sales—and yes, we’ve discontinued products too. But we have never even considered intentionally disabling them remotely, even though we technically could. That’s just basic respect for customers. Money isn’t everything. I’ll remember this for a long time, and I’ll make sure to tell others what they can expect from Google.

Hi. If you are really upset here are some people you can write to:
Nytimes:
# -- Deputy Editor
# -- Lead Consumer Technology Editor
Washington Post
# -- Consumer Technology Writer
I'm sure there are many more we could all write. I'm very upset with Google and the fact that they think it is ok to just cancel our remote access when that is why we all bought the device. Ok, so it is doesn't work with other Google techology, not big deal, but I want my remote access back because this is what we paid for when we bought the device.
I don't want to be forced by some **bleep**ing behemoth of a company to have to throw out perfectly good working technology because they don't see the value in maintaining it. Well as they say in Italian, your wanted the bike now pedal, or your bought Nest with all of its original technology, you have to support whether you like it or not.
Fejesd, great family rule.
Thanks so much
Monday
Well I guess Google won't allow me to write emails in a post.
They can't handle the heat, but these people's names are easy enough to find. All are first name.last name @ the paper where they work.
Thanks,
Eric
