Dear Nest Support Team,
I am deeply disappointed by Google’s decision to discontinue support for my Nest Learning Thermostat (1st/2nd gen). This device was marketed as a long-term smart home investment, and abruptly rendering core features obsolete-including app control and remote access-undermines trust in your products.
While I appreciate the $130 discount on the 4th-gen model, this does not fully offset the inconvenience of forced obsolescence. Many users, myself included, purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality. The sudden loss of smart features (despite hardware still functioning) feels like a deliberate push to monetize loyal customers.
Key concerns:
Lack of long-term support commitments at the time of purchase
No option for third-party app integration post-discontinuation
Environmental impact of discarding functional devices
I urge Google to reconsider this decision or extend the upgrade offer’s value. At minimum, provide concrete steps for users to retain basic smart functionality through alternative means. Or, Is there anything else you can offer me? Like a free upgrade and installation. It is no fault of mine that you are choosing to discontinue my service.
Sincerely,
Ruby Wilder

I have " sense monitor " and received this in Email this morning this is what Google should have done ........."
To everyone who installed a Sense monitor, explored their energy data, and made a few smart changes—thank you. You helped build what Sense is today, and you’re helping shape where we’re going next.
Today, we’re sharing an important update and a look at what’s ahead. We’ll stop selling the Sense Monitor by December 31, 2025. But, don’t worry – we are continuing to support and improve the Sense app and will continue to support existing Sense monitors.
In fact, the Sense app is now going to be available to a much larger set of customers. We are now embedding Sense directly into the next generation of smart meters and rolling out through utility partners across the country, and soon, around the world. These meters are expected to reach tens of millions of homes in the next few years.

Is "Sense" a different brand?

No, Sense keeps tract of your energy use. It hooks up to your electric panel and tells you how much electrcity you are using so you will know what your energy bill will be each month ...www.sense.com

It’s basically a smart meter which utilities are installing nationwide…knows who you are, which rooms you spend the most time in, when you’re away, when you go to bed and wake up, etc, etc, etc.

I second everything said. It doesn't take anything for Google to maintain app functionality. Stop support, fine. But Windows PCs don't not connect to the Internet because they don't support a version anymore. This is planned obselesence to make us buy more crap. They could still allow us to control our devices if they wanted to. But no. In the market for something non Google now.

Windows PC 10s still connect to the internet - microsoft just doesnt update windows 10. That is fine with me. I can still use my windows 10 PC to connect to internet - just use it to watch tv, utube etc. Nest has not updated old nests they work fine just need them to connect to wifi in the house and to an app. Money grab.

Good news! Someone on Github created a firmware that we can use to load onto the 1st/2nd gen thermostats. It will allow them to continue working:

Is it safe though? Does it spy?

I haven't looked at the code but it should be viewable, download able and able to be compiled by the user. In other words, you usually are not forced to blindly use the precompiled executable file.

Agreed! GOOGLE, you should be ashamed! I buy multiple Google products a year such as phones, watches, smart home devices, etc. Not anymore. If I can't trust your willingness to support the products you are selling me, then I'm not buying them anymore.

I'm moving to EcoBee and they are guaranteeing future support from an app. same price, better product (due to not being owned by Google) and no forced obsolescence! Truthfully, I do not trust the google network over homekit from apple either. Security is much more stringent with homekit than the open architecture of Googles platform. Hey google, all the accessories I purchased with this nest back 14 or so years ago are still working like my airport extream adaptor I use for low bandwidth additional items in the house like dishwashers and THERMOSTATS and lights...and it's 10 years older than the Nest 1.
Nest built a great product and Google ruined it! Shame on you

Can someone recommend a "Smart" thermostat that does not require a C wire or connector? We are having trouble getting someone to install a "smart" thermostat using a connector not a cwire. Quotes for over $600 each to install the Cwire! Most we contacted have no idea about the connector that some models have in lieu of a connector. Is there a current brand that requires neither? We have perfectly working Nest thermostats we installed ourselves that still work locally. Thanks

Thank you for taking this action, Ruby! You are expressing the disappointment of many Nest Thermostat users who were abruptly left without the convenient features they had and trusted. The offer to replace the old devices does not solve the problem; instead, it brings many more issues, including the installation of the new device (finding a professional to do that and paying extra money) and installing/learning the new software associated with the new thermostat. It was a nightmare when I was doing it for the first time, and I don't want to go through it again. Besides, most of us like the features of the old thermostats we already possess and have learned how to use. We don't want any new or different features.
Thank you again for emphasizing the concerns many of us have.

I have decided not to buy google nest again. Atleast they should have supported wifi connection. We did not need any software updated anyways.
I am switching to ecobee. Seems to have same functionality and at better price. Very good reviews as well.
