Nest Thermostat E not connecting to the app

This week the Nest Thermostat E went offline by itself. It has been working fine for over two years. We have tried the following, not in order: charging the unit for two hours, reset the thermostat to factory settings. reset the router, tried multiple devices to setup the device, used the QR code and manually entering the device entry code.
Using the QR code times out with an error message.
Using the entry code did continue the set up, but I ended up on a blank page asking me to 'Choose the number that matches your thermostat's display'. Nothing to choose from, can not finish the setup.

Hi. I had this same problem and I solved it by downloading the software update from the thermostat software menu. After the download and reboots all worked well.
