I'm trying to get a key from my Nest and it's saying its already connected, but the app on my phone says its not..nothing that shows the nest is connected. I've tried resetting, turning off my router/modem for thirty seconds..nothing. I've deleted the app and downloaded it again. I've scanned the QR several times. with nothing happening because I can't get a key. HELP

Hi Jim,
We're sorry to hear about your installation troubles! It sounds like your device isn't cooperating at the moment, which sure is frustrating. Let's see what's going on here.
Are you the original owner of this Nest Thermostat, or did your home have a preexisting device prior to moving in? I am wondering if it's connected to another account in Google Cloud and hasn't been unsynced. If this is the case, please try performing a factory reset to try and clear its personal data and preferences. After the reset, it should allow for a fresh install.
If you only need an entry key, here's how to get it. Press your thermostat display to open the Quick View menu. Turn the ring and choose Settings. Turn the ring to Nest app and press the ring to select it. Select Get Entry Key to retrieve a unique entry key.
If you continue to have issues, can you let me know the following details as well?
- Which model of thermostat you have (Nest Thermostat, E, or Learning)
- Which app you are using (Google Home or Nest)
Meanwhile, here are other troubleshooting steps you can take to see why your device isn't connecting...ur app.
Let us know how it goes! We're happy to help.

I am the original owner of 3 thermostats. When I go to the seetings => Nest App, it says the thermostat is already on an account. When I pull the face of the thermostat to scan code and/or get the entry key, there is none.

I'm having the same problem and have tried everything you stated but I still don't get a key. There is no option on my Nest E under Nest app. The only option is connected, which it is. Please help.

I can’t get the entry key for my sekond user

We are the original user but i need to conect to second user because when I leave the house the thermostat doesn’t go on so for that reason I need entry key to install for second user so the thermostat to stays on.

Same issue with my Nest thermostat. I am not able to generate an entry code. It was connected for years and suddenly lost the app connection. I’ve tried repeatedly and even reset the unit and started from scratch - nada.

Ghostwolf3,
I reset my Nest to factory settings and updated my Eero Wi-Fi and it reconnected. No idea which step solved my issue or the combination, but you may want to try this yourself.

Same problem. Brand new installation of nest learning thermostat 3rd gen. My phone successfully connected via qr code. Trying to add partners phone so heating does not go off when I go out. I cannot find any way to get entry key. If I go to settings, then nest app on thermostat it just reads ‘connected to account’ with no other options.

I don’t think you need to do anything more than give your partner your login and password to the app/account on their phone. Everything else should be fine. I’ve loaded mine on all of my families phones and it works for all.

This worked for me. Thanks!

I ran into the same problem as many of you on this thread. My Nest app stopped working on my phone, and my guess is that it was connected to a recent Google integration. Every time I tried to reconnect the phone to the device, the actual Nest device said that it was already connected to a device and I had no option to scan a QR code as suggested. To solve this issue I did a factory reset under settings on the Nest device. I also deleted the app and reinstalled it. I was back up and running after a few prompts in less than 5 minutes, and reconnected to the app after I reselected the WiFi network and re-entered the password. The key is to choose "device that is already installed," rather than "new device," when setting it back up.

Thank you! I changed phones from an iPhone 10XSMax to an iPhone 13 and I could NOT get the Nest to transfer correctly. After reading your post I deleted the app, and reloaded it (apparently it only went as far as the cloud) and when it reloaded it was perfect and I can now control the nest from my phone, thankfully. With a two story house being able to adjust the temp is beyond helpful!

Same problem here. Can't get an entry key or update the software. WiFi is fine for all other nest devices except my Gen1 Thermostat. Factory Reset did not help the issue. Please advise.
Note: Can connect to the Thermostat via Google Home.
