Hi Google Home users,

At Google Home we are on a journey to give users a smart home that is not just simple, fast and reliable but truly helpful. Our investments in Matter and the Google Home app are essential to achieving that goal. Today, we are announcing a number of product updates that get the Google Home app closer to becoming the single best place for you to set up, control and automate all of your compatible devices - Nest devices, Matter devices and thousands of Works with Google Home devices.

New Google Home app to begin rolling out globally to all users

Last fall we shared that we were rebuilding the Home app to give users their home, their way with investments in customization, home automation and an improved camera experience. More than half a million users signed up to try the new app in our Public Preview and share feedback as we worked to improve it. Our teams also invested heavily in improving performance across the board including app load times and camera speed. For example, for Nest cameras that launched in 2021 and later:

  • Viewing your live feed for cameras is up to 34% faster than the previous Google Home app experience
  • Accessing your camera clips is up to 22% faster than the previous Google Home app experience

Beyond what we previously shared, we are rolling out over 50 improvements and new features including:

  • The ability to reorder your Favorites - so you can edit and change the order of your Favorites
  • A more helpful Activity tab - where you will find chronological events of your device and camera history
  • A new Inbox where you will receive actionable notifications so you don't miss important updates
  • A streamlined section for your notification preferences in the Settings tab
  • And an easier and more precise vertical scrubbing of your camera events with event labels organized by type, such as person, package, vehicle, activity, or animal.

On Wear OS, we’re bringing your Favorites to your wrist, rolling out improved camera notifications with animated previews for your camera events and more powerful controllers.

The new Home app experience is rolling out on Android and iOS starting tomorrow and will complete rolling out over the next upcoming weeks. Wear OS users will get the new version of the Home app on May 15.

Original Nest Camera support is coming, too

We know you’ve been patiently waiting for our teams to work through transferring some of your most loved devices into the new Google home app. We have an exciting update to share! In July, Public Preview users of the Home app will be able to begin transferring some of our original Nest cameras to the new camera experience in the Home app, starting with first generation Nest Cam Indoor and followed by Nest Cam Outdoor.

Deepening our support for Matter and smart home devices

We’re continuing to deepen our support of Matter. Recently we upgraded the Nest Thermostat after previously rolling out support for Matter in the Home app and Fast Pair on Android.

We’re now expanding Matter support in the Home app to iOS. In the coming weeks, with iOS 16.5, you’ll be able to set up and control your Matter devices in the Google Home app on iOS devices.

We’ve also rolled out new or improved Home app controllers for 60+ types - representing tens of millions of devices - of Matter and Works with Google Home devices, including temperature and motion sensors that can now report their status in the Home app. For the first time you can close your garage door when you are away, open your curtains to a precise height, check whether your washer is in spin cycle before pausing it, toggle the ice maker and other modes on your refrigerator, select the specific color of your lights, start up your smart mower, and even play/pause/fast forward through active media on your smart TV. With these updates users will be able to do more with their devices from one app.

An improved Home app experience for the Pixel Tablet

While the Google Home app has always worked on tablets, we believe that experience could be far more useful and delightful.

Alongside the new Pixel Tablet, we will be rolling out a more optimized version of the Google Home app for tablets. With improvements across all five tabs, other highly used screens across the app and support for landscape and portrait orientations, users will be able to seamlessly navigate their smart home while on their tablet. This even includes support for navigating your camera’s timeline view and event list while in landscape mode. We will first bring these updates to the new Pixel Tablet and Android Tablet users in June, with iOS compatibility to follow later this summer. To discuss the Google Pixel Tablet, visit the new Google Pixel Tablet community.

Introducing the new home panel, a Pixel first experience

We want to make the smart home as fast, simple and reliable as the light switch on your wall. So, we’re excited to introduce a new Google Home integration for Android called the home panel

The home panel gives you quick, one-tap access to your Google Home, directly from the Android lock screen or quick settings. It will make it faster and easier to control the devices, automations and actions you use most often, such as turn off the lights, adjust the temp or view a camera, without needing to open your device, navigate to the app and find what you’re looking for. For safety and security, the more sensitive device controls require you to unlock your device.

When the new Pixel Tablet is docked and in Hub Mode the home panel can be accessed communally from the screensaver (ie: photo frame, weather or clock). And when someone rings the doorbell, you can also easily see who’s at the front door with a proactive, full screen notification, and quickly answer with Two-way Talk or Quick Responses.

The home panel will roll out as a Pixel first feature to the Pixel Tablet and Pixel phones, including the Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold, next month with the Pixel Feature Drop with Android QPR3. Visit the Google Pixel Tablet community to learn more once the Pixel Tablet is available on shelves on June 20.

More to come

You can expect more helpful features from Google Home. We will continue to innovate and invest in the smart home, so stay tuned to the community for even more updates, and join our discussions in the Home Automation forum.

Will routines that use Nest Cams as triggers work?

Fantastic. Can’t wait to see the new updates!!

Sure I can see my Matter sensor in the app, but without sensor support in routines forces me back to Smartthings.

Thanks for the post Anish, looking forward to it. Any updates on moving Nest Protect to the Google Home app?

Edit: I have just discovered that 'Household' routines / automations now have the ability to trigger other devices when motion is detected 😄👍

Great, but the only fix I really need is a reliabe Home/Away feature. For some reason it keeps on breaking and my house always thinks me or my wife OR me and my wife are home...... I do not understand what is going wrong...

Google home has gotten more and more broken as time has gone on.

I don't want shiny new features. I'm looking for fixes for 99.99% of all the completely broken features that have been repeatedly reported here or on Reddit for the last 3-4 years.

Search is a shell of its former self.

even "Play music" only works part of the time

I can barely get 1/3 of the functionality out of the system that I did when I first unboxed it.

What's going on over there?

Any news on the bare web app home.google.com? Will this receive the same functionality as the home.nest.com web app?

Currently only live viewing is available on the home.google.com, still cannot view camera history, edit device settings, activity zones, create clips and timelapses, etc..

Even though this is all good news it falls way short of what I was hoping for.   After all of this comes out it will still be lacking many of the NEST app features.  (sorry Google).  This is where we should have been a year ago.

... just my opinion.

The announcement does not mention when the Google Nest Hello Doorbells (we have 3) might begin moving to the Google Home app.

when will it be possible to share a single camera without having to add someone to the Home app and thereby giving them all rights to all devices? This is possible in the Nest app but not for the newer cams that only work with the Home app. The entire idea that everyone in a home has admin rights to all devices without any possibility to restrict rights is one of the things that make the Home app a complete and utter failure.

I have 16 Nest cameras in two locations and 3 Nest protects in one of them.  The cameras range from Dropcam to the most recent Indoor and Outdoor cameras.  The Dropcam has recently been sunsetted with a free replacement from Google Nest.

Until Google bought Nest I only had one Google device which is a mini speaker used only as a doorbell for my Nest Door Camera.

The Home App is many steps backwards from the Nest app in relation to the cameras.

1. Security is terrible.  Why must every user get full access to all cameras.  I have 3 other users that need to have access to one of my locations yet they get full access to the cameras at the other location.  On top of that they can change any setting they want at any time.  I have to trust them not to be malicious or make a mistake.  Terrible!

2. Nest Protects don’t appear to be on the horizon for the Google Home app at all.

3. The camera history is terrible.  With the Nest app you could scroll through the history in fast motion until you saw the event for which you where looking.   In the Google Home app all motion stops until you stop scrolling.  You have to guess where to stop to see the event.  The history on the non-Google Nest cams is even worse in the Home app.  Wherever possible I use the Nest app to track down events,

So far all Google has done has taken a great product and app and made them much worse.

Shame on you Google!

Thanks for reporting this, I have tested with my own cameras and they also don't trigger routines / automations.

I have reported this to the Google Nest team and will get back to you when I hear anything further.

The new app is much needed and appreciated but the existing platform is quite a mess. Anybody ever get "I'm sorry, there was a glitch, please try again in a few seconds." ...Speakers answering in different parts of the house.

Hows 'bout my Nest Protect Smoke detectors???

Please!!!!!!!!

Or at least let us know what the future plans are.

I hesitate to continue to invest in them
not knowing if Google will support in the future.

agree with the other commenters here, the home app needs the features of the nest app. its annoying needing 2 apps to see all my cameras as my driveway cam does not show up in the nest app.

Also i get duplicate notifications for all camera events if I have a zone setup. even if i disable notifications for everything outsize of the zone. I just spend all day deleting 50 notifications when it should be like 10-20.

Our hub camera constantly stops working where we are never able to connect and see it in the home or nest app. have to remove and re-add the device for it to work and then after a short while, it will stop working again.

New features are great and all, but make what we have already actually work.

WHAT ABOUT WINDOWS????WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE A FULL WORKING APP FOR WINDOWS 11????

Tech is tech to aid in our lives. However, when we start “depending” on it for vital things like thermostats and you end up sweating it out with a broken hvac system with intermittent issues with after investigation led back to a needed Cwire - more documentation on the cwire needs to come with the nest thermostats - you can’t just expect people to drop these in and hope all works fine with equipment that can break (ac unit freezing up or dangerous temp conditions for pets at home) from no cwire - after a week and working with HVAC company that I had to pay $100 to basically tell me the cwire is needed - so my new tech was $249 for the unit and another $100 for a service call in 95 degree weather. These units need a better fail safe - we have the gen 3 - did you know that no cwire these things need to be charged like an outdoor camera?  NOT DOCUMENTED with the unit. Include these things to the customer EASILY with the unit PLEASE!

Hi Jackson18448, I think in Google-Speak "Roll out" means it starts to become available but they will roll it out to various customers over time.   But I don't know if that is 1 week or 1 month.  So far I don't have it either.

My wife and I both have the Home app version 3.0.111, since 2 weeks ago.
Hers displays the latest design as described in this topic.
Mine is still showing the older design.
Why would that be?

I have deleted then re-installed the app on both devices.
The phones are both IOS, same model / age.
I did have “public preview” enabled on my machine (only) a few months ago, but disabled it well before this update.

I still have the old Home app screen design (version 3.0.1.9). Is the new updated version still being rolled-out to users?  Is there anything I need to do to get the new version of the Home app?

DANIELMOUNTBASS

@rygogg It's not 'rolled out' yet, despite Google saying it is. From what I can work out, only Andriod/Google Play Store US has the new app so far.

rygogg

@DANIELMOUNTBASS Thanks for responding. I'm in the US and still don't have it. I check the Google Play Store multiple times a day for updates and nothing yet. Guess I'll keep checking.

@rygogg Odd, this link of the US play store shows the images of the new app. Must Be an error on their part then?! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hey everyone,

We're happy to hear that you've been using Household Routines for your home automations. We're aware that some users are seeing camera motion events as starters in the Google Home app. This is unexpected behavior that should no longer be happening after today. We are continuing to improve automations and camera experiences and value your feedback. Please continue to follow the Google Nest Community blog for future updates!

Thanks,
Kelan

So it's now a week past the May 11 launch, and still no sign of the new app. When can we expect it to drop for all users, as your promotions have indicated?

Maybe it's just me but the improvements to the home app sound the same as the new panel..which is sorta pointless since there are SO many NUMEROUS glitches in the home that you guys never seem to wanna fix..are we to look forward to wonderful new features that are just as glitchy n messy as they are now in the home app?...bc let's be real-t's a trainwreck.

EmptyNester

Sorry Google, I have to agree with moe and so many other users on this forum.  What you release for updates fall very short of the expectations of your user base.  I wish you could see that and actual blow us away with lots of features that work properly in one single release.   The Google home app is still miles away from what the users get with the NEST app.  And the Home.Google.Com website that has been around for 5 months now has had no changes and it also is still not nearly as powerful as Home.nest.com.

Sorry Google, that is my perception of what is going on in the last 2+ years.  And I have to ask if the Google employees are actually using this products and are you happy with them?

Hi my name is Horace Randy Holt. I am writing today cause of what's taken place to what's morally and ethically a situation in my present up-to date from 2019 is. I know there is so much I can't explain as to there is so much I can explain. . But being put out as a person of no morals is not what I've asked for. And not what I promote. I sure hope the goal is making communities safer from people that want opposite? I can only do so much as a person that has been screwed over by systems in place and people then doing  physiological attacks or what would they be called? Helping? I'd like to know or understand the theory behind that compared to the truth of what's happened. And having kids is what's always been a concern . I know there are people in areas either pretending or not to care about same things but do they? I have did everything to my knowledge and more  to do things proper. So I'll leave that there. And leave a request of a audit of all my info to try narrow some situations to where needed cause I honestly don't even know how it's a thing to ignore victims or families that lost to similar issues possibly. . My devices I know were being messed with for whatever reason but for me what good has come from people misusing info seemingly to try mock or the things that have happened. I am discharged from work and not to return donto circumstances at that time... and prior with an environmental and humanity crises I'll say in lonerocks Sk and rm of wilton472.  I have since been on my own and everything turning negative while still trying to hold my values on crap.  It ain't been easy and it been easy being ignored seemingly in my outcomes for help in situations cause I have hard time believing there's nothing that can be done to prevent further chaos or harm to people that been victimized and or targeted cause trying to help.  Messaging from lloydminster sk Canada. Please share .. on another note helpin people is doin what's help is requested not helping themselves or using it to blackmail. I say cause I feel lines have been crossed into liability for what would be called ignorance or disrespect as coincidence are invasion of privace if misused. Right or wrong ? I at least tryingvto understand as I know I have never had to deal with the results of someone or knew that still aren't honest to themselves about how they would look at any life lessons of mutal considerations cause I don't appreciate being what I call tormented or at risk of injury cause if not helping its intent right? Just pointing it out for those that hear me speaking as typing or watching as typing.. that's how ducked up it has been and is for me. Cause I'm a grown ass man not a goof as portrayed even by kids these days so again. Share please and help if able to do the right things.

Quick comment I am involved in seemingly the largest issues to ke I've ever known as a Canadian. Devices and accounts or trust will never be the same to me unless  acknowledgments and and understanding are fulfilled. Cause I dont want to say how I feel when it's apparent who gives a **bleep**. I did. And gonna live with it for the rest of my life. Is it hard to ask to stop being **bleep**ed with case no one can explain anything else Instead to try push limits of intent or premeditated boundaries. . Sorry if don't make senses to anyone that reads but neither does the multiple atremptes to do things right for the wrong areas?

I'm very disappointed that the answer to motion starter events for cameras not working is that they weren't supposed to be there in the first place.  It was exciting to finally see this appear for google cams, but I thought you might fix it, rather than just remove it again - "sorry to get your hopes up"

Removing features we rely on without providing a backup plan is extremely bad customer service. Removing features three weeks earlier than your constant reminders is even worse. Every night you said you were going to remove "Help me Sleep" on June 13, but then you disabled it on May 22.  WHY REMOVE FUNCTIONALITY AT ALL????
