Nest Cam 1.69 Update ruined night vision even more

SuperAdam

So Google updated their nest cams AGAIN and further ruined Night vision, day time HDR got a bit better but nowhere near as good as it was with 1.65 software, I about had it with Google, look at these picture and tell me if I'm imagining things, the picture on top is the new 1.69 software and the one on the bottom is the 1.67 software just a few minutes before the update, look how fuzzy and grainy everything is with the update, it's like everything is out of focus, STOP MESSING WITH THE CAMERAS GOOGLE, we paid money for this, it's literally unusable at night now.

Hey everyone,

We recently began to roll out a software update for Nest Cam (battery), Nest Doorbell (battery), and Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) that addresses an issue where some users experienced decreased video quality when operating in low light environments. This update will be rolling out to all users over the coming weeks.

Best,
Edmond

Curious.  I’m not seeing any difference whatsoever.  Is there any way you can post pre and post 1.71 images to show how much better the quality of night vision images has gotten?

Got it about 3 days ago, some improvements but there is still fuzziness at night, I just gave up, I am worn out.

Yes, I agree. There seems to be more nighttime contrast, but the images are still blurry. I wish Google tech support would help us troubleshoot our collective problems.

I have noticed zero improvement what so ever on my cameras. Still blurry daytime and night is still terrible. Dunno what they are even updating at this point. It’s super easy to see its bandwidth throttling on their end, it won’t change until they open it up again. Simple as that.

I’d love to compare images from 10 days ago to what I have now but the app won’t load those videos. I have a truck parked in my driveway right now maybe 50 feet away from a camera and you can see the outline of the truck and the glare from the front plate, otherwise nothing. There’s a building just behind that and you can’t see it it’s so dark and grainy. I have already started purchasing components to a 4K system with local storage. I’m done with the google camera quality and the issue with loading old events or even videos from 10 days ago. Google needs to figure out the support system they have. Anyone from the states trying to contact them doesn’t get a response until some odd hour in the night prolonging any solution to the issue. I would not recommend these cameras to anyone and I almost feel guilty knowing that im going to remove these and sell them to someone although these cameras don’t seem to be an absolute waste for someone that just wants to see when the fedex guy dropped a package or when the garbage was picked up, these still can’t pick up a license plate no matter the time of day or how close the car gets. From what I’ve collected from the past year owning these cameras from this forum and others I know with these cameras is this. These cameras do not emit enough IR light to do the job in low ambient light situations. If you live outside of town these cameras DO NOT work. These cameras emit just enough light to catch the outline of objects CLOSE by but still not enough for the camera to identify and record an event happening. If paired with other external light sources the camera can detect and record an event but the detail in the image is still not there. If you live in a neighborhood with a bunch of external light sources these cameras may not be horrible but that still will not fix your image quality. I’d rather get rid of these cameras and spend a little extra in another system before I have a real incident and I have some early 2000s tube tv quality video to watch.

What cameras did you end up going with? Can they pick up license plate characters?

@SuperAdam first created this post over 6 months ago.  Google still has a "go to answer" link at the top of the thread which is NOT the answer as you all know and is downright misleading to any newcomer.  I got rid of my Google cameras almost two months ago and have zero regrets.  I've mentioned it before here, but there's much better and much less expensive alternatives out there.  I still subscribe to this thread because I'm hoping there will be a fix at some point for everyone here who still uses these cameras.

Which cameras did you replace the Nest with?

I got the update and it looks much better.

If you have seen an improvement with the quality of night vision images out beyond a few feet or so, please post pre and post-update pictures so those of us  saw no improvement whatsoever have some sort of reference for comparison.  Thanks.

My 1.69 vs 1.71 recordings also look pretty much the same.

At least it didn't get worse 😂

I’m having so m any issues right now with Nest Aware Plus but the software version update 1.71 OPENMASTER 393812 daytime viewing looks more clear. I had to turn off my night vision for all of my cameras that were near a porch light and they look better, but my cameras not near a light source still are still blurry with night vision.

It is clearly apparent google has throttled the bandwidth based on the quality of the images we are all experiences. They have also raised their nest aware plus subscription from when I first subscribed, it used to be $12 now it is $15.  I’ve been having issues with my nest aware plus for two weeks and tech support/supervisors have all given me different reasons and solutions to resolve it and it’s still not fixed.  Right now I am only getting nest aware basic even though my account shows nest aware plus and it deletes recorded events after 3 hours. I don’t know what genius came up with this but I f an event records overnight it is deleted before you wake up…..MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN.

1.71.

Can't tell if that's the wife coming home or a ghost or something. I mean, what the hell is this.

Well I spoke too soon about the night time viewing. This camera is near a light source so the night vision is turned off but early this morning the graininess on the camera recorded as motion. Google needs to fire all their software engineers, they stink at their job.

Be sure to let @madebygoogle know on Twitter how happy you are with the quality of Google support and the quality of night vision on their Nest cameras.

UNACCEPTABLE, PERIOD!
