Nest Cam won't link to Nest App

We have 2x Nest cameras- 1 older generation and 1 newer. Our older one works perfectly, is linked to both Google Home and the Nest App. We have a Nest Aware subscription.

However, the new camera won't register in the Nest App, therefore it won't allow us to have all of the features of Nest Aware. In particular, notification of "sound" which we do indeed get notified of with our old camera as it is in the Nest App.

How do I get it linked to the Nest app? Or at least get notified of "sound" which seems to only be an option for Nest Aware.

It looks like you are yet another customer who has discovered--as we did when we bought our Google Nest Camera (Battery) a year ago--that Google Nest's newer cameras and doorbells (released starting in the fall of 2021) work ONLY in the Google Home app and NOT in the Google Nest app or on the home.nest.com website.  Conversely, live feed for the older cameras and doorbells can be viewed in the Google Home app, but administration and notifications are still handled ONLY in the Google Nest app (and on the home.nest.com website).

A year ago, Google Nest's Vice President posted this explanation for this 2-app approach: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/Message-from-our-GM-Updates-for-our-Nest-customers/ba-p/.... There has been no update whatsoever since then, even though he said "we commit to being more transparent with you on where we are taking the camera portfolio". As a result, a year later we are still using 2 apps for our Google Nest cameras and doorbells, and our newer camera is still lacking the capabilities of our older cameras.

Hi folks,

I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. I hope that sheds some light on the issue. If you have other questions and concerns, feel free to let me know.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

JT

Thank you for the response. It's so frustrating that I am paying for Nest Aware but can't use all of the functions now that I can't link this new camera to the Nest App. I really need to recieve "sound" alerts from both of the cameras, which is why I've paid for the subscription as this function is only available via Nest Aware.

Is there some way I can still recieve alerts for "sound" via Google Home? I feel like I've searched all of the settings and can't seem to find any option to recieve alerts for sound.

Hi kpage,

We’re sorry to hear that you can’t view your new Nest camera in the Nest app. As mentioned by MplsCustomer, the 2nd Nest cameras are only available for viewing in the Google Home app but together you can view all your Nest cameras in the Google Home app as they're connected in the same home structure.

Here’s how to enable your sound notification:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Choose the item you want to change>tap the Toggle to turn the notification on or off.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

JT

Hi JT,

I have turned on all the other notifications but there is no option for sounds.

In the Nest App there are options to recieve push notifications for sound such as "people talking", "dog barking" etc. Which our old camera is able to do with Nest Aware. How do I get these notifications on the new camera in Google Home?

@kpage

You can't.  Google Nest decided that its newer cameras and doorbells released starting in the fall of 2021 would work ONLY in the Google Home app and NOT in the Google Nest app. As a result, "Sound" notifications are different between the older and newer cameras.

On older Google Nest cameras, you can get "Sound" notifications for Person Talking, Dog Barking, and All Other Sounds.

On the newer Google Nest cameras, you can get "Sound" notifications for Carbon Monoxide Alarm Sounds and Smoke Alarm Sounds.

Great troubleshooting so far, you can also give these steps a try:

  1. Open the Home app .
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings .
  4. Select Notifications.

Let us know if that works.
