Nest Hello worked for 2 years now dead with 28v running wires. Turns on with USB only.

My Nest Hello worked fine hardwire with the previous doorbell wires for about 2 years. I measured the volt with a multimeter and was running 28v and every worked for a couple of years. Now there's no power connected to the hardwire. Wire still reads 28v. I tested the Nest doorbell using the USB power supply and it turns on and everything works. Could there be a hardware issue? Did I fry something with the wire connection? Any ideas how to solve the problem? Thank you for your help!
