Nest doorbell settings

Although I have the “motion” setting unchecked and only have people, packages and vehicles checked, my nest doorbell cam records hundreds of minute motions each day. When I view my recorded history I am unable to filter out all these motions to only view the events of interest

@buschd27

If you have the Google Nest Hello Doorbell, Google Nest records all events but allows you to filter them in the Google Nest app; see the "Filter" option under "Event history": https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9208447?hl=en

If you have the newer Google Nest doorbells, under Settings | Events | Seen events for your doorbell in the Google Home app, you can specify which events get recorded AND whether you get notifications.

At least that's how it works for us for our older Google Nest cameras and doorbells that work in the Google Nest app, and our 2 newer Google Nest cameras that work in the Google Home app.

Thanks for commenting. Sounds like your setup is similar, if not identical to ours. Unfortunately, even with the seen events set to record only people, packages and vehicles, and not motions, we get hundreds of motion events recorded and I am unable to then filter them out to only view the events we want. Have tried using settings in both Home and through Nest apps to no avail.

@buschd27

The filter in the Google Nest app is kind of goofy. In my filter, if I select an activity zone (say "Back Yard") but do NOT select "Motion", I still get "Motion" events that occurred in the "Back Yard" activity zone because I selected the "Back Yard" activity zone. (In other words, there is an "or" operator between each selection.)

If I want to get just "Person" events, I have to select just "People" in the filter, and NOT select ANY activity zones. There is no way to filter for "Person" events in the "Back Yard" activity zone.

In the Google Home app, with the settings in the screen capture below, only "People" events in the "Our Yard" zone get recorded in our event history, and I do not get notifications.

Now that I have examined what I am recording a little closer, it is the Home app that feeds me so much I am not interested in and won't filter it out. The Nest app is marginally better (I guess) because it does appear to be filtering out the motions that I am not interested in. I don't use zones on my doorbell so don't think that is a factor. Pretty poor interoperability and user friendliness if you ask me, and it requires using both apps instead of putting everything under one.

Hi folks,

@buschd27 thanks for reaching out and I know how confusing it is when your Nest camera keeps detecting motion even though it's not selected on the activity. To know more about this, I'd like to ask some questions: were there any changes to the Wi-Fi network? Are there other family members who can access the camera? Do they receive any notifications? Has the camera been moved recently?

There are a few things that can trigger unwanted alerts or false positives, here are common triggers to name a few:

  • Changes in the light level
  • Shadow moving across the frame. For example, if a cloud moves in front of the sun.
  • Trees or bushes swaying near the customer’s important areas.
  • Headlights or flashing entering the field of view.

Give these steps a try:

  • Try turning on and off your motion activity.
  • You may consider changing the position of your Nest camera.
  • You may also create an activity zone to select the areas you only want or not get the notification. Here’s how.

Keep us posted.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Emerson

I too am having this issue. I deselect motion & sound on todays history of captured events but they don’t filter out of my history. So I still have to go through so many 5 second recordings of “motion” or “sound” to see the Clíp I want. I’ve tried filtering them, I created zones last week, tried filtering by zone only but nothing works. No matter how much I filter I see every single capture of that day. ITS ANNOYING
