Night Vision Too Dark

SuperTrollMan
Community Member

Hi All,

I've recently installed new Google Nest Cameras.

They had been running perfectly, however I noticed night vision on 1 of the camera's had deteriorated significantly.
I toggled the night vision from auto, to on, to off and back to auto.
Its definitely on when its on auto, but its considerably poorer than a week ago (a lot darker).
The camera's are mounted and wired with the genuine Google cable, so they haven't moved or changed any other factors.

When looking at the 2x 'battery' camera's I have, the other one was working perfectly fine.
I noticed the firmware had changed on the one having issues "nq-user 1.67 OPENMASTER 361459"
Whereas the working camera was running 1.65 of the software.

I started chatting to support about this, they had me restart the camera this afternoon, which didn't change the issue unfortunatley.

I then noticed the working camera started showing the same symptoms, upon checking the Home app, it has now been updated to 1.67 aswell.

The same shot 24 hours apart has significantly poorer night vision and the only common denominator I've been able to come up with is the 1.67 firmware having issues.

Is anyone else seeing this?

IT IS TIME TO SAY SCREW GOOGLE AND GO TO RING CAMS

Dear Google, I had to cancel my 24/7 surveillance subscription. Not paying for useless footage. Had to install additional motion sensor lights, the camera's are rendered useless atm. You know there's a problem with the last update. These camera's are costly. Myself and everyone else wants to know  when is the new update coming to fix the last bad update?

I agree and all they need to do is give us a hdr option like other companies do to turn off and on as needed not force it upon everyone after years of using it. I have 6 of them and such a pain to move but might just happen if there is no hdr option soon.

We had HDR from the beginning, why do people keep thinking HDR was just enabled? Google adjusted the HDR and now it looks brighter, I want the old HDR, without it then this camera is just as good as a $30 knockoff.

Stopping my subscription also. Waste of money when the cams are so blurry now. Time to SWITCH TO RING!

I'm so glad I only bought one of these cameras - Mine was over $200 and its now worthless, but replaced it by a 4K Lorex camera that is much, much better. The quality is much better than my Nest and also saves the footage to an SD card. Plus there's so many options inside the Lorex that you can tell they are a customer focused and customer centric company, unlike this Google crap. They are all about themselves and about "control". That's why they don't let you revert back to old firmware versions, lower bandwith whenever they feel the need, don't respond to emails, and they definitely aren't going to admit they were wrong, either. I highly doubt we will ever see any update fixing this problem because in Google's head, they did nothing wrong and the quality is increased. Google is a company that simply does not care about their customers. I emailed 10 of the VP's at Google about this issue and got NO RESPONSE and its been two weeks. They flat out do not care.

Another problem I'm having with my camera system since the "upgrade" is the display units in the house keep going down, saying the camera is unavailable.  Usually the only cure is to hard reset the display by unplugging it, reconnecting it for a reboot, and then it works again.  This is now daily.  Google really messed this whole deal up in a major way.

I have this issue too.

I actually got so pissed off as 1 of my cameras wouldn't come back on again that I removed it from the Home app and now it won't add back in when I scan the QR code.

My only option now is to borrow ladder, go up and take the camera down, bring it inside, reconfigure it, then go back outside and put it back up again.

I spend so much of my day troubleshooting these cameras, and I never know if they are actually recording anything that they are pointless in every aspect.

Another interesting issue is that I went to view footage on a camera last night and there was 2 seconds recorded, my wife went and checked the same camera and she had 90 seconds of footage recorded (the same 2 seconds I had, plus another 88 seconds on top), so she could see the incident that happened but I couldn't, so now I can't even trust the recordings.

I only went with Google as I trusted them to be a big company etc, but this is hopeless and has turned me off of all of their products now sadly.

I have been there. Tip: Now that you have the camera down, write down the Setup code on the bottom of the camera. If you ever need to set it up again, you should be able to just get close enough to the camera that your Bluetooth can connect during the setup and enter the setup code when prompted.

Same here, I have two google cameras and them both suddenly stating to render a very terrible image, specially at night, it seems like a software update has made this.

$100 cameras, but the video quality at night is worse than some cheap $20 cameras. The footage is so blurry, it's like it's covered in vaseline.

It's really sad that Google doesn't care about their customers. This thread is getting huge and not one single Google employee cares. Such a garbage company.

How pathetically bad is the 1.67 udate? Google are like look we've updated and fixed something haha yer righto updated and made everything marginally worse than what it was. These google cameras and the home app should be removed from the marketplace altogether they are simply not fit for purpose never have been never will be...

Googles engineers are inept morons

I am a big Google fanboy.  I have a lot of their products and services which cost's a fair amount each month.

I replaced all my Neo's camera around the house with Google and they were working great but now it is not worth my Nest subscription of £10 a month.  I can turn back on my Neos and it costs me £3 a month and I can actually see what is in the image.

I will be cancelling my nest subscription and removing the cameras and reverting back to Neos as this is not acceptable, espeically from a company as big as Google.

Problem getting worse  after 1.67 update... Not just dreadful colours and image quality.... Now going on and off line  on a regular basis.. With  my door bell camera ( battery) and nest cameras ( battery) which never went offline once before the update.. So now unreliable as well as un watchable.!!!

Yup! This has been happening to my 3 cameras since the update and Google has me running in circles! Check the internet, reset, buy a charging cable, sorry we will get back to you! Ugh!

I have had the exact same issue as your pictures show.

Initially my problem was that Night Vision was too dark and missing people coming into the street trying house and car doors so was useless for identifying the individuals.  My solution was to leave my Philips Hue outdoor light on all night at the front and turn off Night Vision, that helped capture unsavoury types that were coming into the street.

It has since progressed to being blurry and washed out during the daytime which in turn has multiplied at night whether Night Vision is on or off so I either get a ton of false motion detected events but people go completely undetected walking past the camera unless they are right in front of it (less than 1m away).

My cameras are showing that they have nq-user 1.69 OPENMASTER 376297 firmware, so looks like the problem many have had here has continued from 1.67 into 1.69.  I am now getting to a point where I am considering retiring all of the Google Nest Cameras and Doorbell I have to switch to another system as at the moment the Cameras are completely worthless as soon as the sun sets.

30th September 2023 - There is a blurry haze over the whole image, grass and bush at the bottom of the picture have no definition, people walking between the cars when the image is like this are not detected or recorded as events.

Agreed.  Replacement system being researched.  >5 years in the Nest system,

Exactly the same as mine. It’s like a fog over the whole image. I’d get better quality out of a 1990s web cam.

I’ve two more cameras from another manufacturer on the way. If they work out, I’m pulling out all these Google cameras.

Worst support from Google ever. Can't believe they are willing to accept all this backlash and bad press.

Google thinks their 1.67 software is an enhancement to Nest Cam Battery, they think they did us a favor, I am so mad right now, reading their announcement about the software made me lose all hope that this was just a big but now it's clear it's a feature. Look at this night vision comparison and tell me who in their right mind would think this is an enhancement

1000001075.jpg

and the third image is from my other camera showing my partner with his white shirt glowing blue, like it's a reflective vest, his skin is glowing it looks like he's on fire, how thinks this is an enhancement? I'm tired of buying products from Google only to either be ruined or abandoned, this deserves a lawsuit.

Hello SuperAdam,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community. Nest servers and your Nest Camera dynamically adjust the resolution of your video stream so that it matches the available bandwidth. When your Wi-Fi network slows down, video resolution drops and when your Wi-Fi network speeds up, video resolution increases. You may restart your Nest Camera and your Wi-Fi router. Hit this link for more information. Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Emerson

I have done ALL OF THIS, I have a giga bit internet and my speeds right under the camera was 400mbp, DONT MAKE IT LIKE ITS US, I'm sick and tired of you people, this is YOUR SOFTWARE YOU PUSHED ON US, don't you ever talk to me like I'm illiterate, fix the **bleep** software or revert it back, do you think it was an accident that all of a sudden dozens of people have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM? Next time come back with something useful, you guys are borderline USELESS.

It is now September 5 and there has been no communication on when there will be a software update to correct the issues 1.67 caused Google Nest Camera owners and Nest Aware Subscribers.  When can we expect this issue to be corrected?

Adj

The community specialists continue to merge threads with no effort on their part to resolve the actual issue which is their 1.67 update. Instead we are told it’s our Wi-Fi bandwidth, restart your cameras, etc. etc.  Most people would have done all those things before reaching out to google for a solution to the issue. Can anyone say class action lawsuit……..

I got the same response a week ago.

There is no explanation about why it is taking so long to fix.

Bob223

Yes, merging threads with no indication of resolution is definitely a problem.

There are now hundreds of messages confirming the problem.

This was the most recent communication I received:

"Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Customer Care Team.

Sorry about the long wait. I was on my days off.  I got an answer from our Engineering department. They told me all the departments are aware and working to resolve the issue as critical now in order to resolve the current issue with the firmware 1.67. Once I have an update with the solution regarding the firmware I will let you know but at the moment we will need to wait for this to be fixed. We apologize for all the inconvenience but we are working on this to solve it as soon as possible."

All excuses coming from Google Support. It's a 5 minute fix, all they had to do was revert back to firmware revision 1.65 and the problem is solved. If they want to add HDR in the future, then all they have to do is revert all cameras to firmware 1.65 that was actually stable/solid with no problems  back for now, and then turn an on/off button allowing the users to decide if they want the awful HDR feature on. You know, be customer centric, and not make decisions on the customers behalf. Stupid. Also, where's the Quality Assurance Department at Google? Does one exist anymore, or did we outsource that too? Anyone with 1/2 an eyeball would have caught this problem. Helllo?

Why are these cameras and the home app just absolute rubbish? Why why why

CaliforniaLove

I honestly never thought a big company like Google could be this bad. My guess is that the folks who are making these cameras aren't Google of course, it's overseas. So we are waiting now months later for this "magic fix" that's coming...Yeah right

Jumperr

In my opinion there is no fix it's labelled a feature update they won't revert at all the colours, night vision is so grainy but it's a feature to be brighter. They should have not taken the decision out of our hands and used it as a toggle but it is what it is now. Either we keep it and try pretend it doesn't exist or move away, I'll do the latter eventually.

They said they did a new update but their new and improved pictures are the opposite. Their new update is what my cameras use to look like and the old is what my cameras look like now. I can barely see now on my night vision in both my cameras. I have the equivalent vision of a night light. They need to put it back how they had it bc people in dangerous neighborhoods really rely on their cameras and its a safety issue. I dont understand why you would mess with something that wasn't broke to begin with and now my cameras are worthless at night.

Google nest doorbell battery issue since latest update. The so called hdr makes the picture quality terrible. We didn't know about this update initially and contacted Google with a fault, they agreed and replaced it.

New one set up fine until it updated to latest firmware which made it the same, washed out colours and pixilated. Not only that, it won't show live feed in app, it's saying not connected although it is connected, the battery also dropped 30% in one day. When is the fix coming?
