Hello,
After the Android 12 update about a month ago HDR is no longer working for me on any of the apps that supported it previously.
I have two Google Chromecasts with Google TV (GCCWGT), one plugged into my receiver routed to the TV and one plugged directly into the TV. Previously neither one had an issue displaying HDR content via Youtube, Amazon or YoutubeTV apps, but now neither of them is able to do so.
I did not update my TV in that time and confirmed that it displays HDR content from those same apps w/o issue when using the TV's built in apps. Additionally I am able to get HDR running my PS5 through the receiver to the same TV input as one of the GCCWGTs. Note that Dolby Vision does work for apps that support it.
I have tried factory resetting both devices w/o any luck.
Researching online I have seen others having this issue and for some of them they were able to change their output from 4K60hz to 4K30hz, but that does not work for me. Given that is seemed to be relatively widespread I figured Google knew about it and would address it with the next patch, but there was an update that was made available today (11/29/22), but it did not fix the issue.
Please assist.
Thank you.

Same problem here. Google... please acknowledge and fix ASAP!

Thank you, this actually worked for me. What a strange bug and only affecting the YouTube app. HDR was working for Netflix and Prime, and with low latency it finally also works in YouTube.

This should work, but unfortunately it will likely revert after a brief period of time and then you need to update the setting again.

Hey Lee_K,
I found a work around on reddit that works for me, I still think this is a defect they need to address but this is what I did:
Go to Settings -> Display & Sound -> Dynamic range & Color format -> Dolby Vision Mode -> Select 'Low Latency'
I have no idea why one has to adjust a Dolby Vision setting to get HDR to work, but this did the trick for me. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately my set doesn't support Dolby Vision, only HDR10. I had read about the DV tip in a Reddit post.

Thank you for helping out on your own thread, Shogungts!
Hey there Lee_K,
I'm just checking up on this thread, did you still need any help with your HDR? If so, there was a recent bug-fix update that came out, so make sure your Chromecast with Google TV is up-to-date on its firmware. Afterwards, let me know if the problem persists, and we can troubleshoot further.
Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran - I just confirmed that I am up to date on my firmware and that this is still an issue. The only way that I can get HDR to work is if I have 'low latency' selected under Dolby Vision settings.

Hey there Shogungts,
Thank you for letting me know! Just out of curiosity, what kind of TV do you have? Also, if you don't mind, would you be able to re-create the issue and submit feedback via Google TV? That way, if there are any error logs generated, it would get them sent to the Chromecast Engineering team.
Thank you for your help, and let me know if you have any more questions or need any additional help.
Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran,
I have an LG OLED, but I do not believe this is related to my TV. This is a widespread well known issue as can be seen by all of these sites/discussions:

Hey there Shogungts,
I've seen this issue around a bit, but it seems to be a bit different for everyone, since people have pretty unique setups. If you would like, we can get you into contact with Chromecast Support regarding this, and they would have the tools to dig a little deeper than we would on the forum.
Best regards,
Jeran

Works on LG C2 for some reason, such a weird device, it also worked for some time after input switch

Hey there,
Does anyone have any more questions or need any additional help?
Thank you,

Hi Jeran - thank you for following up,
Can you answer the following:
1) Is this a known issue that Google is working to address
2) If yes to number one, is there an expected time when it will be fixed
Thank you,
Marc

Hey there Shogungts,
No problem at all! Yes, this is a known issue that Google is working to address. Currently, there isn't an expected time-frame on when it will be resolved. However, the bug is currently being updated by the Chromecast Engineers, so we'll update the thread as we learn anything new, or as they provide new troubleshooting steps.
I hope that help,
Jeran

I would like to know if you there's any news.
HDR doesn't work yet, I tried everything...
02-20-2023 08:10 AM
Like Shogungts, I am having this issue and I can temporarily get around it by enabling Dolby Vision Low Latency Mode. However, the chromecast changes this setting back to standard every time I turn the chromecast off and on again.
If I instead disable dolby vision completely and just use hdr10, then I have an issue where hdr will sometime be completely disabled upon restarting and/or resolution being set to 1080p. Has anyone been able to figure out a workaround?

Is HDR working for TV's that have Google TV built in? Like a Sony XRA80J? Thanks...
01-08-2023 02:06 AM
Hi Wsa,
Try bringing up a youtube video that is in HDR (example) and see if your TV plays it in HDR. If it does, then you should be fine. If not, you may have the same issue.
01-08-2023 08:41 AM
Thanks for that. I'll check. I'm still wondering though - is this HDR problem ONLY for the Google Chromecast dongle? Or does it also affect TV's with Google TV built in?
01-08-2023 08:43 AM
The other thing is this - how does a person tell if HDR is working? What is there about the picture that's supposed to look better? OLED Tv's already have a great picture. How does a person tell if they are NOT seeing HDR? Thanks.

Any update on this.
This is such a nuisance

I have the same problem. Since android 12 no hdr no dolby vision is some apps (prime, hbo max). In some apps its working (disney+). Before the last updates, all worked fine...
My tv supported it, in my tv app these apps have hdr and dobly vision too, and working. Only the chromecast has this issues...
I tried to reinstall apps, tried to restart/turn off chromecast neither helped.
The only workaround is to set dolby vision mode to LOW LATENCY, but its forcing hdr into dolby vision movies...
Anyone tried factory reset???
I seen this problem since 2022 november everywhere on the internet and still no fixed by google....

Hi Vik82,
@Vik82 wrote:Anyone tried factory reset???
I would NOT factory reset if I was you. I tried this multiple times and it did not solve the issue, it just resulted in me having to setup all of my apps, logins, etc again.
@Vik82 wrote:The only workaround is to set dolby vision mode to LOW LATENCY, but its forcing hdr into dolby vision movies...
Unfortunately this seems to be the only thing that works and what I noticed recently is that my GCCWGTV keeps resetting the Dolby Vision setting to Standard (not sure if this was happening before and I just noticed it).
Really frustrating that Google continues to let this linger.
01-31-2023 03:59 PM
There was an update for GCCWGTV today, but sadly this issue does not appear to have been fixed. In fact, after performing the update it reverted the Dolby Vision mode to standard which undid the workaround.
02-20-2023 09:34 AM
Sadly this no HDR issue, still exists today 😂. Would love to use Chromecast with Google TV as my daily driver device but unfortunately I had to revert to the firestick 4K max to watch shows in the desired format. Now this is questioning if I am in the correct eco-system. Bugs like this should not take months/years to address.
03-10-2023 02:20 AM
Had the same problem and my tv doesn’t support Dolby vision either.
Setting chromecast to 4K50hz seems to work for me.
04-01-2023 08:35 AM
Hi, all, I have a similar issue while I use youtube video to test the output isSD or HDR. I just found THAT I set the chromecast with google tv to be HDR prior other than Dolby vision, youtube can output HDR content to my TV. But If I set Dolby vision to be the prior one, there is only Dolby vision work, and the youtube only output SD format to the tv even youtube shows the video is HDR.
04-22-2023 09:04 PM
I also noticed this same issue a while ago but posted it on the wrong forum. I am able to use the Dolby Vision Low Latency work around but I shouldn't have to. I should be able to stream any HDR content using the Chromecast with its default settings. My firmware is up to date as of the date of this posting.
Please respond with an update or a solution.

Ok so i have a tv thats support dolby vision and hdr10+ on prime hdr10+ was not working. This is how i got it to work its a bit of a hassle but it does the trick for me.
Go to settings- Display & Sound- Dynamic range & color format-change dynamic range format preference to hdr
2.Change match content dynamic setting to match content
3. Change Dynamic range format preference back to dolby vision
4. Dolby vision Mode has to be in low latency
And now hdr10+ should work and dolby vison aswell.
Tested on the Disney plus dolby vision kicks on when watching movies and tested on amazon prime and hdr10+ worked aswell
This will work for a bit but randomly itll stop working again. When it does just repeat steps and will work properly again
It sucks that this has to be done to get something that should just work to work
06-21-2023 06:28 PM
Worked for me, thanks!

@Jeran - any updates here? It has been over 6 months since this feature was broken. This absolutely makes me less likely to buy/use Google products in the future.
