YouTube closed captions disappear into top left corner of screen when casting

For the last several days we are unable to see the closed captions on videos we Chromecast from our Samsung tablet to our TV.

The last word of the captions shows up in the top left hand corner of the screen.

My husband is very hard of hearing and we enjoy our YouTube videos.

Could you please keep your answer low Tech or explain things really well, because I am not technical in any way?

Thank you very much we could really use some help with this.

I have the same problem when casting. What seemed to help for me was, after casting on my tv, to pause the video I was playing in the youtube app on my Phone. The video has to not be on full screen on my Phone and on my tv after I paused the video it has to show the runner at the bottom. Not sure how to describe this, but it shows the thumbnail of the video I am watching and I presume the play list at the bottom. The subtitles are now in the middel of the screen and when I resume playing the video, after a few seconds, the subtitles reset and are back at the bottom of the screen.

I hope my description is clear and that this works for others!

I have the same issue. Is this a bug?

I don't think so because it seemed to start happening when they updated the Home app.

Fyi I contacted Google through the Home App. Under Settings go to Support and you can report the issue there.  Hopefully they can fix it.

Check the answer from SuusD on the website. I just tried it on two random videos and it worked both times. Good luck!

Just want to add that I am having this issue too.  It has rendered the device useless for those who rely on captions.

Hoping you will also report it through the Home App as outlined above.

I did. Really hope they fix this soon. I thought it was temporary, and tried every caption option I could find to see if it was added as an option somewhere as I have seen on other systems. Sadly no. It's just broken and makes tv unwatchable for those of us who need those captions.

You seem to be in the same boat as we are.

It's becoming a question of access for the disabled in our family. It's impossible for one member of our household to watch YouTube without captions.

Sure hope someone comes up with a fix soon.

A temporary fix seems to be to use the youtube cast remote control function to reset caption settings. While playing a youtube vid, click up twice on the cast remote -> go to the right to Settings -> Captions -> Caption style -> reset style.

Always works for be, but I have to do it again everytime I start a youtube session.

Unfortunately my Chromecast is the old cheap one without a remote.

Check the answer from SuusD on the website. I just tried it on two random videos and it worked both times. Good luck!

I'm mean the remote function in the youtube app, not a fysical remote. I think this applies to all gens, but I might be wrong. You find the remote function here: Cast-button (while casting) -> "d-pad"-symbol that looks like the arrow buttons on a game controller.

Either way, SuusDs workaround seems easier if it works for you.

I have the Second generation of Chromecast, so this fix doesn't work for us either, but thanks for that idea

My family member is quite disabled by lack of hearing and losing closed captions on YouTube videos is quite a blow. Not really fair to those who can't hear.

I can't believe it. I am casting from my Samsung tablet but this easy fix just worked on two random videos! I hope the others who are having the same problem see this fix. So far so good and thanks so much!

Sadly I was not able to replicate this workaround. This really needs to be fixed.

I have a chromecast Ultra with no physical remote and have been having the same issue recently. Here's how I fix it:

On my phone, I click on the chromcast icon in the top right corner of the video. This brings up the chromcast menu which has a 'Remote' button. I click on it and it brings up a remote menu on my phone with 4 arrow buttons. When I click on one of the arrows the subtitles reset to the proper place onscreen.

Hope this works for you

Confirmed this workaround functions today! Thank you very much for the clear directions!

This still needs to be fixed for real, but at least there is a (weird) workaround until then.

So happy it finally worked for you. Enjoy.

Glad it worked 😎
