Is Matter (CHIP) Really Improving Smart Homes?

JAXON1
Community Member

With Matter (CHIP) rolling out, the goal is clear: make smart home devices work seamlessly across ecosystems like Google Home, Apple, and Amazon.

But in practice, things still feel a bit inconsistent.

Some devices connect easily, others still struggle
Automations can be unreliable at times
Older devices often don’t support Matter

So while Matter promises a unified smart home experience, it still feels like a work in progress.

💬 What do you think?
Has Matter improved your setup?
Are your automations more reliable now?
Or is it just adding another layer of complexity?

I don't have any experience with Matter devices just yet, but I've heard that it was much worse at the introduction of Matter.

If you search YouTube you would see evidence like this one from December 2023... Jump to 4 minutes...

And Google itself is going through a very dramatic transition from the Google Assistant to Gemini which is compounding everyones problems.

I reckon if in 2 years (2028) everything just works good enough then we really do have a major issue.

I'm giving the Smart Home industry 2 years.

Matter sucks with Google and Alexa.  I'm literally bypassing using Matter with Google and Alexa and setup an Aqara Matter Hub for all my "matter".

Matter works terrific with other ecosystems such as Aqara or Govee.
